Sorry for reigniting this very old thread. But I just redownloaded Rogue Touch, having such a blast still. I was just wondering if there is still a tiny chance that this game will be updated to survive future iOS updates, or if it is now abandoned for good? Dev‘s Twitter account seems dead as well. So, I don‘t know, if he is still active here.
Hi there! News of my demise has been greatly exaggerated... To put your mind at ease: I am planning to update Rogue Touch again to support newer iPhone screen sizes, and other important stuff that Apple requests these days of modern iOS apps. There is a TON more stuff that has been deprecated again since my last huge overhaul to avoid the 32-bit app apocalypse in 2017. This time it may require a near total re-write by the looks of things! FYI - Someone informed me of an interesting bug just this year: depending on the keyboard languages you have installed Rogue Touch can crash when naming your character at the beginning of the game. I know for certain that the Thai keyboard being installed (not even the active keyboard, just available in the keyboard list) can trigger this, and maybe some other keyboards... so I'll definitely address that within the future update as well. Not much traction will occur on this until January 2024 but thought you'd like to know
This reply makes me incredibly happy. I want to thank you so much for keeping original Rogue alive in its best playable iteration! Only things I could wish for would be the addition of a relative swipe-to-move control option (as in Cardinal Quest 2), and maybe alternatively a true ascii graphics mode. But those tiles are lovely nonetheless. Again, thanks for your reply.
Pretty wild seeing this thread bumped. This game is the reason I joined these forums, and about a year later I'd start writing for TouchArcade. Been working here almost 14 years now. Where does the time go?
Just wanted to bump this thread again, since it‘s now February 2024 and I wanted to ask, if you are currently working on the update. Cheers, excited me
Not sure why I never picked up this game. I honestly didn’t think “roguelike” were even a thing 14 years ago. Guess it hasn’t been updated for newer screens?
No, not yet, although I hope the dev is going to add that as an option. Currently, character is always in the center, and you touch one of the 8 directions around him to move one square or shoot/throw in that direction.
I know I‘m kind of posting into the void here. But I‘m currently playing and highly enjoying iNethack2, with graphics set to classic ASCII mode. And I‘m kind of hoping or asking, if it would be possible to add an optional ASCII mode to this game, in case it really gets updated?
With the news that TouchArcade is shutting down I had to come back one more time! This 36 page thread has been the home to tons of feedback and suggestions for over 15 YEARS! One final TA update for anyone reading this in the future... Development on several projects of mine will resume: 1) Rogue Touch modernization (newer screen sizes, other quality of life improvements) 2) Rogue Touch 2 (tentative title - successor to the first game with all new controls, dungeon designs, monsters, items, and more) 3) Spirit Hunter Mineko (she was shelved for years, but not forgotten!) For more Rogue Touch strategy and information you can check my ChronoSoft blog and forums at http://www.ChronoSoft.com Expect new blog posts on these game projects and more starting in 2025. Please note the forums are closed to new accounts at this time, but there is a huge amount of strategy and cool info there. If you want to reach out to me in other ways: I no longer use Twitter/X, but I can be found on Reddit as ChronoKev. RIP TouchArcade (2008 - 2024) RIP to this Rogue Touch forum thread (April 9, 2009 - Sept 2024) So long and thanks for all the fish!
Soooo happy to get a final update note in these sad moments! I wish there was a better channel to reach you for quick feedback, like Twitter, a discord channel or an email address. There‘s also some healthy competition now. A game called Hollows Of Rogue is currently in beta, and it‘s another fantastic Rogue port, that plays really well and offers some QOL options like turning off secret doors or dark rooms. Only thing missing (for me, at least) is portrait playability. So, as a big fan of your game, classic roguelikes and Rogue, I‘m super interested in following your updates and new games! All the best!
Just put together a personal Top 10 list of my all-time favorite portrait games. And Rogue Touch is high up on that list: https://appraven.net/collection/110898986 One thing I recently noticed, and I wonder, if this is a bug or if its correct behavior: When I come across an Aquator and stand next to it, if I then take off my armor before it hits me, the armor still loses a point. Somehow feels wrong, but maybe that‘s how original Rogue is handling that situation as well?
Wow thanks for the honor, I am glad that Rogue Touch made it into your top 10! On the subject of armor, that is actually the correct / expected behavior... this is because Wearing or Removing armor takes 2 turns! In-game is not immediately obvious what is happening unless you have a monster nearby (like the Aquator in your example). Once you have started to put on or take off, monsters get chances to make 2 moves while you are "busy". Trying to remove your fancy armor whenever an Aquator is near is a smart idea, but it's best done when they are 2+ spaces away from you.
Another tiny thing: sometimes the log text is 1-2 steps behind. But force-closing the app and then continuing the run always fixes this.
[Loses a run] [Starts a new one] Log "Rocco, the Lv.99 [class], dies at the hands(?) of a slime while changing clothes; butt facing skyward, his mud-covered underwear is exposed." That'd make a great start.
