Thanks for the tips guys. I'll be sure to remove both them bad boys. Now if I could only find some food. My first good game I made it to level 22 with a cursed teleportation ring on the whole time. Now that was an annoying game.
You have the patience of the gods! I'd probably have committed suicide after the first 3 or 4 floors! Oh there's the stairs... just... one... more... step.... *BZZTT teleport* ---- I just wanted to say thanks to everyone helping each other out and sharing tips here. It makes me feel good to know that the newer players are getting some help while I'm tied up on work duty during the day! In other news, the CommanderData's Angels Leaderboard contest seems to be going quite strong. Most of the top contenters are in my forums, but I'm sure someone will make a sneak attack soon! Athena is everywhere. I figured Ripley would get there at least once or twice Oh, and sometime in the last hour we broke through 20,000 dungeon runs submitted to the database! An amazing number, despite the fact that I probably account for over 9000 of those! I think I'm going to expand the leaderboards a bit past 20 games in each category just because there are SO many games being played. Maybe 25, 30, or 50 will be shown in each category if my server will handle it!
Now that is annoying. I had that happen to me, too, though not for as many levels (I died before I got down that far). The stupid thing is, I put the ring on deliberately. I had already identified it so I knew what it was. I'd forgotten that rings of teleportation are always cursed. I didn't even need it at the time either, I just wanted to test it to see if it could be useful in a battle. I'm a bit of a tard sometimes.
Actually, hey CD, shouldn't identification reveal curses or are the only things ever cursed in the game nasty rings and negatively enchanted weapons/armor?
Putting on rings, armor or equipping weapons as soo as you find them can come back and bite you on the ass Rings of teleportation, aggravate monster and narcolepsy are ALWAYS cursed, as are negative status weapons, armors and rings. you can ID weapons by throwing them at monsters......if you hit the monster and then kill it, it usually will drop the weapon, at least on the earlier floors. Hmmmmmm........I find myself wondering if I can ID armors and other stuff like that, too........ *wanders off to start another dungeon crawl*
I have not had a lot of time to play recently, but on the Chronosoft board, we actually have a story thread where you can tell your tales of woe with a little fiction embellishments. Check it out.
Hey CD, as I suggested once before to you, you could also make sub boards that are intervals. Each of the major sections, Wealthiest Rogues, Killing Sprees, Deepest Floor, Secret Characters could all have - Today, This Week, This Month and All Time.
Cool, thanks. I WILL check that out! I probably should sign up at the Chrono forums, just in case the unlikely event that I ever post a good game I can at least prove it's me. 60 years from now, I'll be a cranky old man telling my great-grandkids "when I was your age, I retrieved the Amulet of Yendor!" and when they go "yeah right!" that's when I bust out the screen shot on my iEverything of the RT leaderboards. "See! Right there! I was the slowest EVER to retrieve it!!!" Then they stare at me frightened and run off to play Rogue on the Holo-deck. I can't wait. I'm still anxious to actually retrieve the dang thing, leaderboards or not. I've been hammering away with Athena for this contest and it seems like once I get to the floors in the 20's, I just lose all composure. I crack under the pressure! I can't even imagine how stressful it must be trying to make your way BACK UP. At the very least I'm learning a lot of good lessons, it seems previously I was content to just grab the strongest melee weapon and hope to upgrade it a bunch and just hack'n'slash my way to victory, armed with lots of healing items. Now, I take a more discerning look at my inventory and try to be really smart about the items I use. It's already working, I'm having better games everytime and I know SOMEDAY I'll grab the Amulet (even if it is with a secret character )
I had my best run today and I blew it! I was on level 17 with a ring of regeneration, sustain strength and searching. Enchanted Elfin Armor, I believe it was +2 Flaming long sword +3 +3 with an unused Zap. I had a remove curse scroll, 5 paralysis potions, a few healing potions, 7-9 pieces of food. Then I ran into 2 Phantoms and a Griffin. I paralyzed the Griffin, killed the two of the Phantoms. I was down to 24ish hp, I put my regen ring on and was walking out. I wasn't playing close attention, and I didnt realize I was getting attacked. I saw my life was at 6 then it was too late, and I died.. BUMMMERR!!!! That was the only game I was able to play today, but I'm definitly doing a few more runs tonight. Question though: My ring of searching was an amethyst that I found real early and never ID'd. I came across another amethyst ring, I assume that it was a ring of searching too? Could there have been a chance that it was cursed? Or does cursed just mean you found a ring like attract monsters? If you un-curse a ring, does it gain positive attributes? I believe a similar question was just asked, just wanted to clarify. Thanks a lot, I'm having a blast playing this game.
Those are things I'll never touch without identifying them. First of all not all of them will have obvious effects, most of them don't self-identify, and there are a number of bad ones. Plus, good or bad they sap energy, so it's best to identify them first. Scrolls are the only things you can safely experiment with, as there are none that can do you harm. Potions slightly less so, but the only one that does any real lasting harm is poison, which can be undone with a restore strength potion. The rest... best leave it to be identified, as the risk/reward factors are too skewed.
No? Getting teleported into a mob of mobs isn't exactly harmless. Sure, the scroll itself isn't getting you killed in that case, but I wouldn't use the phrase "safely experiment".
Well, my run ended, when...as you can guess, I was killed by a griffin. Is it pointless to fight toe too toe with griffin's? No matter how buffed my character is, if there is a griffin around, either he kills me or I barely kill him, and then one of his "buddies" finishes me off.
I think this game offers us some solid evidence that we can NEVER let a mad scientist try to breed lions and eagles!
Oh, good idea, this game CLEARLY needs sharks with head mounted lasers! Sure there isn't even any water in the dungeons but, hmm, maybe the player can use this to their advantage and just wait for the sharks to die on their own due to the lack of water!
Maybe give the sharks a mechanical walking mecha-like breathing apparatus, so they can wheel after you....but the scary thing about laser sharks, is that if you kill one, they send out a pheromone summoning more laser sharks. Bad news for any rogue... EDIT: Is there a weapon/ring that allows you to identify all?? If not there should be.
I think that's a rare enough occurrence that I'd still call it safe. Since you'd only do that blindly once per game, the chances of landing in a party room are pretty slim overall, so I still don't mind blindly reading scrolls to identify them.
This is too true...perhaps CD needs to add more NASTY scrolls? Shiren had a few REAL STINKERS including but not limited to: Hands Full: You can't pickup any items for the rest of the level. Mouth Seal: You can't eat, drink, read any items for the rest of the level. Explosion: Knocks you down to 1 hp, but also kills all adjacent baddies (but for no experience).
