Yeah! You're the guest of honor! Let's SLAM DANCE...hey...get up...why is he just laying there in a pool of blood?
Hmm I'm regretting I told you my secret now! In all seriousness though, I'm not sure if I agree with this sort of policing. For instance if players become unable to try curious little things like this all the good rogue players will be the same. For instance, with too much policing like this, the only difference in the final score between 10 pro rogues would be luck (because they all will have managed their resources to an optimal degree and searched every nook and cranny of every floor). There needs to be some wiggle room for this sort of experimentation which has the upside of potentially increasing your score, with the downside of more chances for you to make that one fatal error. I think this is definitely in the spirit of the original rogue. On another note as someone mentioned I think your re-animaton of previous plays definitely poses a more obviously "cheating" exploit...namely playing a super character like Hulk.. dying on floor 2 on purpose; and then rounding up his +10 damage ring the next playthrough (and other such exploits). Just to be clear I will not be doing this.
Only if you survive the fight with the corpse........most of the time I get my ass handed to me by the skeleton LOL
Oh come on now, you yourself admitted, using this technique the game became almost a joke and provided little challenge PLUS, as it stands players would HAVE to work this exploit if they want to even compete with your score there. I also agree, another good find, the ghost thing could get out of hand, perhaps they can make it so "Secret Character Only Items" only have a very small chance of showing up on the corpse or something. There will always be wiggle room and I really doubt CD can COMPLETELY close this "back and forth" loophole, but he can at least tighten it up a bit.
What I've been attempting to do is get some of the gear from a secret character for a standard one. If I've died too far down, though, I haven't been able to survive.......or else I get jumped by some other monster after the fight and die anyway. I have yet to even get to the 21st floor*grumbles about frakking griffons* I was trying out a method of dispatching griffons.........paralyze, then polymorph.........worked pretty good until I got a frakking DRAGON on the 17th floor on my last run this morning *ouch*
1) I never said it was a joke; the contrary, I have always said it was incredibly hard and always presented the chance of getting surrounded and eaten by Dragons (which is indeed what happened to me). In addition you will eventually get bled dry by vampires; as twalkabout mentioned. 2) The "up and down" thing I was doing isn't what has been stated here, mine involved much more danger and never involved myself going above floor 25 3) I only did that because the current game did not reward progress beyond my current level. What I mean is, the enemies get vastly stronger after level 26 and the loot/exp earned does not scale with this nearly enough. Furthermore my stats were maxed out (couldn't get above strength 31) and my level could ascend no further (Bug Chaser was the limit); so in a sense I was forced to do what I did if I didn't want to end my game. The true solution here is to raise the level cap, add more monster types that appear at deep levels and scale the exp/loot accordingly. On a side note, the solution to the exploit I mentioned is to 1) not allow secret characters to come back as skeletons and 2) make like level 20 or something the minimum area for a skeleton to spawn. Currently as it stands it will create a truly "broken" scoreboard; as I have already worked out a method to easily acquire the equipment of super characters...but thus far have refrained from using it.
Scotopia, maybe I should hire you as a beta tester for future games Don't worry, I'm not going to take the fun out of it for you! There will be modifications made that encourage you to keep moving up or down though. Couple of reflections on the super dungeon divers: 1) I agree that once past Floor 26 that there should be some more interesting rewards, rare things becoming more common, etc. Maybe the bonus on rings and armor and weapons could scale higher so you could find +7 armor or +10 rings, crazy stuff like that 2) A few more ranks past "Bug Chaser could be good too (actually I would insert new intermediate ranks and shift the XP and high end names like Bug Chaser further out to the end). 3) Strength cap of 31 could be lifted, but I'd have to make it scale a bit more so that as you go beyond 31 it doesn't exponentially increase your power On the skeleton front... I did consider that people could try to exploit it. Fortunately the various features that were implemented make this very difficult to exploit regularly. Stumbling blocks to corpse exploitation include: having to go to at least the second floor, have to actively look everywhere for it, a pre-filter that randomly disposes of some stuff (assuming it was taken by looters), and then a chance of the corpse lying dormant. If it does not jump up, you only get one item, and that will be randomly selected from whatever I didn't pre-filter for looting. If everything else falls into place and the guy does jump up... you still have to kill him! And then you'll receive *some* of your original goodies, but not necessarily the ones you were desperately hoping for.... All of that adds up to some awful amount of repetition with the hopes of trying to exploit the corpse system. If you get what you were looking for after 20 or 30 tries you probably deserve it
*sigh* I should've kept my big mouth shut............ I have noticed that you don't always get the secret weapon(s) or armors, only occasionally.......more often I get other stuff that I was carrying....and not always the helpful items, either................. instead of a ring of stealth from Drizzt, I got a cursed ring of monster aggravation that I'd just dropped elsewhere in the dungeon.........
I could totally burst your bubble on this; showing you how the very rules you set up there can be used against you.......do you want me to?
I must admit I'm curious, perhaps you should PM me that clever analysis, so we don't get too many copycat players
What might happen to you from handling too many scrolls? I still am drawing a blank on this clue........guess that's what I get for not going to sleep until 6 AM because I got to involved in playing the game
Ink on you hands? What would happen if you had a special character, dropped all but one cool item, and then offed yourself? Would the corpse you found later be guaranteed to have that item on it?
*Groan* You were right, that is a bad pun LOL Gods, but I'm braindead today I'd better go pay my frakking taxes.....worse than fighting griffons, ur-viles, trolls, jabberwocks and dragons combined
Ha, good try! I just replied at the exact same time you did with the answer so look up to see it... I believe that means I owe you a coke If you tried what you suggest (dropping everything except your precious! in order to try to reclaim it next time) based on the way it's currently written you will not actually gain an advantage. Actually you might not want to try it, because you could end up finding a corpse with nothing to offer... or worse yet *fighting* a corpse that has absolutely nothing on his or her person NightOwl40, painful I know! You'll find that character starts with a variety of scrolls, and can auto identify all scrolls that you pick up in the game. That's a pretty handy skill there! Oh, Scotopia- I'll read my PMs next!
Way to go! I could see you have it picking items at random from a full inventory...and if it hits an empty space nothing should be generated so that you're more likley to get some loot if they had a full inventory.
