Game just received a minor bug fix update. Time will tell if it plays a little smoother on older devices.

  2. Anyone notice any changes?

Still crashes during the tutorial, iPhone 5S 7.0.4. This is frustrating.

  5. Do ridge racer games receive frequent updates? Is there a good chance framerates will go up on ipad retina?

I hate that I can't just do a quick tap on the brakes to start drifting. I have to tap and hold a bit to start drifting. Irratating.

  7. You can do a quick tap, but you have to oversteer first greatly.

It's way different from A8, not as easy to enter, but it is more challenging to control and can be more fun after one gets the hang of it.

Sorry for you. Tried three races right now (after the update). No problems on my iPad Air (7.0.4). Ridge Racer Slipstream runs perfectly.

The old story: Did you jailbreak your device?

  10. Does this game have any joystick or icade support, and if not, does anyone know if any is planned?

I'm playing this on ipad 4 and couldn't be happier. Absolutely the best and most enjoyable racer I've played on ios. For me way better than RR3, GTA, 2K a Drive and Asphalt. The gameplay is really super. Good challenges keep you on your toes. Love the car designs and upgrades have no timers. Good colors on paint jobs and nice tracks.

I have no lag or any frame rate issues either. Controls are very, very good. I use the tilt but I also like the tilt and manual accelerate a lot. A rare game where I can't decide which control I like most.

The nitro is really cool. I've fallen to last many times but then through building my nitro I caught up and sometimes won and second but its a great game.

I highly recommend this game. Much, much better than the first game.

I'm not seeing the update in the US. Will try it on my ipad 3 when the update is available.

I would be curious if it is running full ipad retina and if some special effects are turned off. While it runs pretty well on an ipad 4, it can barely handle it, so kind of wonder what it would look like on an ipad 3.

Okay, now that I finally got past the tutorial without the game crashing, I've finally been able to get into the game. Not to say that it still doesn't lag and crash at random periods though :(

That said, what are the optimal tune settings for the cars? I see a lot of sliders relating to handling and nitro. Would prefer a more drifty car. Have only played the PSP ridge racer games before this and those didn't have tuning.

@MrJayden: Check out a few pages back, rapaleeman is the most helpful member here.

  17. The next car you purchase, you can get one that is more of a drift car. Kinda wish to start, one could have both a drift and grip car to see which was better.

No jailbreak, is there one for ipad air already?
After rebooting the ipad seems to work without crashing.

If you buy the mixed car you can tune it up or down in terms of drift angle and essentially create a drift car or a not quite as good grip car. I wasn't able to keep the Prophetie sideways the whole track like I did when I finally bought and upgraded the Magnifico to screw around some but then again you don't need to drift on straights. Fully tuned you can do that Magnifico to earn some nitrous in a pinch but you don't need to that normally.

I'm finding in this game with the slightly less than precise controls (the price of doing business on a touch screen though these are really great) the mixed cars are the way to go for me. Unlike RR7 where I would set up a drift car and never mess with the settings, here I'm switching between full drift/dynamic (the numbers are more negative) with Ultimate Charge on some of the curvier tracks and then setting up a slightly grippier car with less drift angle (meaning the numbers are more positive) accompanied with auto nitrous on the tracks without a bunch or sharp turns to chain together.

I'm no expert or anything so I'm sure others may have a different opinion but for me, the smaller screen makes navigating at 250+ MPH on the tracks with a lot of hills (Ruins and Old City for example) a little difficult. Being able to regain control faster, especially on the first and second laps when the tracks are still crowded with the bunched up AI makes it a little easier flow past them.

Just a heads up, the AI is really rough later on. Not impossible but the Battles are just as difficult as the Ridge Racer V ones which means that not everyone is going to be able to beat them. The extra grip and slightly less out of control feeling made the first 3 races a lot easier for me. The boosts you can buy won't help as most are useless except for the full nitrous on start so don't waste your CR on them. You don't need them and they don't seem to counteract the thing you are buying them for anyway.

To touch on the fact that there is no way to test drive cars and the icons being super cryptic. Namco seems to think this is a super accessible series meaning to me that either they are the best virtual racers in the world or they have no idea whom their target audience is. This game looks and plays great but unlike Asphalt this game ramps up super fast, requires split second decisions, and is more dependent on player skill rather than car upgrades.

I uninstalled Asphalt 8 as I'm sick of that freemium nonsense even though I paid for the game. The cars got so astronomically expensive and required pretty much all upgrades to even stand a chance that the returns in terms of winning just weren't enough to progress since the game gated you not only to certain seasons but also in those seasons you are required to use X car in X race to proceed. To me it just wasn't balanced enough as you progressed that the fact that it is game of the year is really shocking to me even if most of the racing is great (car kickflips are dope). Seems to me that not many got past the first few seasons before fully passing judgement. If people enjoy grinding the same tracks over and over again with little to no payout in relation to the cost of stuff then so be it but it isn't for me (which is kind of ironic in my case as I love to do that for fun in Ridge Racer). I feel like I'm always getting better in RR whereas in Asphalt it was just getting a few extra bucks that go into the bank to hopefully afford that required upgrade as the AI is always racing in the most upgraded cars and always seem to have a tank of boost on hand.

This game, while on the surface looks super suspicious and full of IAPs, is thankfully not that at all. It is a Ridge Racer game through and through and you earn more than enough money to buy new crap as long as you are placing in races and going in order. I have never had to grind. You can use any Class 04 car in any Class 04 race and are not required at all to buy another. Same with Class 03 and Class 02. Once upgraded, which typically takes a couple of series but is rather quick overall, the machines are yours to tame and fling around the track. The AI is tough but not unbeatable and while there is some rubber banding obviously, you can actually blow out the CPU.

It is a different level of accomplishment to me and while it may be shallow in terms of crap to unlock, but it gives me a great feeling when I finally beat a race in first that I was struggling with. Asphalt doesn't give me that at all as I feel like if I throw some cash at the game (which the game is constantly reminding me to do) then I can instantly win.

Sorry, I had to rant after seeing the top games of 2013 with Asphalt at the top. A game that is balanced so poorly with IAPS, same with IB3 while I'm thinking of it, should not be considered a game of the year no matter how great it looks or how great it plays. If that is the case then Fightback should win brawler of the year as that thing is great for the 6 minutes it let me play before needing either money or time to recharge.

tl:dr - I love this game and I have way too much time on my hands at work.

I was using the Fiarre upgraded to the max and tuned for max drifting, and have finally gotten down the techniques for being able to keep boost going for most of a lap. I decided to try the Bayonet, and tune it for grip all the way. I'm finding that once I modified my driving techniques to suit the car, I'm just as successful with that car. For boost I'm using Normal for both sliders as well. It's a little simpler to use Auto boost for grip cars, but I like the extra strategy required when you need to drift to get boost. Just wanted to let people know that even in class 4, grip cars are just as viable as drift cars, you just need to use different techniques.

@rapaleeman, I agree regarding Asphalt. It was very fun for the first couple of seasons, but then turned into a grind fest. I even bought a car pack, since I found the game very fun and didn't mind supporting the developers, but eventually I still got to a point where I was having to repeat events that I had already won just to earn currency, or I'd have had to buy some currency. Also while Asphalt is certainly challenging, I didn't find it as satisfying. It's so over the top and chaotic and with so much different stuff happening that even when I win it often feels like it was due to luck as much as skill. Even though Ridge Racer has a fantasy physics model, I feel like it is more like a proper racing game, with more depth. It rewards precision and technique more, and feels more satisfying when I win, and less random when I don't.
