I don't really care about the graphics. So long as the gameplay is good. I loved the retro style graphics in Hook Champ.

But one thing I cannot stand is graphics that try to be realistic, but don't even get close.

What exactly are you refering to by 'retro graphics'?
For example; paper mario is retro, yet so is hook champ, in different ways.
Retro graphics only work if te gameplay is retro style, otherwise, it's a fail.

But how many games on the iDevice are like this? I can't think of one, except the Family Guy app

I prefer 3D games, though I still am in love with 8 and 16 bit games. I'm 14 years old :)

I'm 23 and have been playing games since I could hold a controller or push a stool up to an arcade cabinet. Overall to me it really doesn't matter what the graphics look like as long as two things are always kept in mind.

    1. Your game is only good as its worst aspect
    2. Graphics = Immersion

Keeping these two things in mind anyone can create a very good game with whatever graphics they choose. Take the best game of all time (my opinion) Super Metroid for example. It was a SNES title with wonderful art and gameplay that is still being copied today (ex. Shadow Complex for the XBox360). However Super Metroid's appeal to me was how well it immersed the player in its universe. Silent Hill 2 did this as well. If you want a deeper more explination of that you can check out Zero Punctuation's review of Silent Hill 2 on www.escapistmagazine.com. He pretty much sums up my feelings when he talks about atmosphere.

I could name a few more games that did this (Shadow of the Colossus, Trauma, Closure, etc.) but I've already made my point.

All in all, graphics can only add or take away from an experience. What a developer chooses for an art style ultimately effects a games appeal.

Thanks for listening to my rant and have a good day. Thanks also for bringing this topic up!

I'm in my 30's and have been playing games since I can remember.

Not that I prefer retro graphics I just seem to prefer the older games. Don't get me wrong all the current gen systems have some great games but nothing grabs my attention the way it did back in the day on the older systems. Hell, I still have my Atari 2600 hooked up and play it often.

I'm still willing to try anything but I am often pulled into games that look retro more so than a game that is all pretty and 3D.

I am almost 17 and I love them. I grew up playing my moms SNES and NES and got my N64 at 5 but until then was playing Super Metroid, A Link To The Past, Battletoads, Zelda 2... Been a lifelong gamer and love retro graphics bring back a great deal of nostalgia. All games I have done use retroish graphics. (I currently am trying to port one of my already done games from windows to the idevice).

But I love that graphics are improving so much. I mean I love my 360 and PS3 but games of old I loved so much more. They had a real challenge and alot more unique than todays games. Favorite franchise though is RPG and always will be.

    I'm 30, and i prefer 2D over 3D, by a mile. I don't mind pixels at all, either. In fact, between a flash-looking game and a 8-bit-looking one, i prefer the 8-bit.

High school... I can never get over 2D/Retro graphics no matter how interesting the story is. I got FF1 and couldn't stand it, and another SE game, Chaos Rings, and loved it (Chaos Rings is semi-3D).

Bingo! Same here - hate the cutscenes, and big budget blood-fests. I'll play something like Robotron long after a game like BioShock is completed. I've been through every console from day 1, and I have to say, the PS3 and 360 are the least played (well, except for Blue Ray movie watching on PS3). As I get older, I get less patient and tired of dealing with game that looks like Hollywood Production, has an M rating, and requires you to remember 30 types of button combination's. I find many of today's big budget games cold, just like some of the big corps that produce them. When programmers didn't have fancy machines, with power house graphics, the main focus was game play and not how many pot-marks you can count on a characters face.

I guess this is why I like playing portables these days....it's very reminiscent of the retro years.

I got the original Nintendo when I was six years old. Then I got Sega Genesis then Super Nintendo then Playstation 1. Then I stopped playing video games entirely somewhere in high school. For xmas this year, I asked for an ipod touch for the music and I bought a game or two and now I use the ipod touch to play games much more than I use this thing for music. I am 29

Yeah, I love the style, pixels an' all. I also own an NES with a bunch of games, and even crappy ones I still enjoy simply for the retro appeal. Yeah I can't say nostalgic, because I'm only 14. The only thing that annoys me when people do retro graphics, is that sometimes, the pixels aren't perfect squares or anything, they're sort of blurry close up, it's just a thing with me.

I'm 29 and I've been playing games forever. I must say I tend to like retro graphics, but as others have said they have to match the gameplay and provide an immersive experience.

I think older games tend to age better, too. Many games from the 16-bit era are totally enjoyable nowadays. This doesn't happen very often with newer games. Many of them are completely forgettable.

There are exceptions, of course. There were crappy games back then and there are superb games today.

I'm personally stuck in the middle.
Old school graphics (pixel and vector) are all very cool, and i have several games that i LOVE with those graphics (pewpew 2 or hook champ for example, but i'm also open to nicely rendered 3D graphics, which are also awesome.

In the end, it really comes down to what you're trying to make. some games work with hi def 3D graphics, others with nicely drawn pixel graphics. i like em both.

I'm 13 and the oldest game console i've played is a gameboy advance.

I am 16, so I grew up with an N64. But at the same time, I cannot stand graphics like Sword of Fargoal. I like graphics to be polished. Not necessarily 3-D, but good resolution and quality. An example would be Tilt to Live. Very pleasing to the eye. Graphics like Sword of Fargoal, even if the gameplay is fantastic, are unplayable for me. Solomon's Keep appears to have similar gameplay to that game, but its graphics are fantastic.
