This is my first post. So HI!! to all the TA members If the gameplay is good I don't mind that much about graphics. But when I choose which game to play, graphics are one of the factor to look in to as the first impression. Still in basic I like retro graphics. Oh and my age is 34. Grew up on Atari,MSX,NES(and famicom),Arcade gaming and a bit of Commodore64. The modern graphics are really great, but those graphics kills my imaginations a lot. I don't mean that I don't like that. I enjoy playing games with beautiful graphics. But with retro graphics you can enhance and complement the image in your head to enjoy the game world any way you like. Just wanted to say that in the old days using imagination was one of the fun part in gaming experience. Though I'm not saying that you can't do that in modern gaming, just needed that aspect more in the old days IMO. By the way I enjoy HookChamp. Great example for "retro graphics meets the modern gameplay". Sorry if my English is sloppy, grammars & spellings may be wrong.
I couldn't have said it better.I have a certain dislike for polished-to-extreme-hyperrealism stuff, I do have a lot of games for my Virtual Console on Wii, especially the classics like Turrican, the Super Star Wars games etc. I think some of the old school games had an artistic talent You dont find that much anymore. Dont wanna start a flame war, but since I currently play DARKSIDERS and am completely addicted to it, I have to say I like it MUCH more than the demo of God of War.The whole art direction and style is just phenomenal, while GoW looks way too clean and artificial to me.GoW 1 was awesome, but sometimes...shader effects can kill atmosphere.Besides that, GoW 3 is very, very brutal. I love games with artistic textures.I love Beyond Good and Evil and Prince of Persia. And does somebody remember OUTCAST from Appeal, with its voxle engine ? Yummie.
I hope youre not 43 factorial. But I like them, I'm not "old" but my dad had an snes and we still have that, but they just look so beautiful. I'd take good 8-bit/16-type graphics over choppy 3D everyday.
Awesome, I love it: I think I love the fact that one pixel can make a difference. And remembering the adventure games back then, they had great pixel art.Monkey Island, Indy, The Dig...
I am 32 and I am not a fan of retro graphics .. don't take me wrong .. The first game that I've ever played was Karateka in old Apple machine (couldn't remember which model) .. I love it during that time, but when Street Fighter came out on the arcade, I always look ahead for better games with better eye candy .. there's nothing wrong with Retro graphics, but I guess it's up to each person perspective ..
well im in my 30s and still have a huge nostalgia for games from 8 bit and 16 bit era. its not so much the visuals but certainly the gameplay. sensible soccer beats FIFA into orbit for sheer fun, imho ofc those epic games with massive budgets, almost movielike in content, are great for about 3 or 4 weeks then ya get bored real quick. i doubt anyone will remember these with much fondness in a few years from now.
Amen to that. I'm beyond 50 now and playing video games since the late 80's when I owned my first Commodore AMIGA. I'm still fascinated, how many innovative designs were born then with so little means of technology compared to nowadays. When my son discovered the iPod Touch and its possibilities, I'd almost given up on computer games- a market producing 90% crap with flashy graphics. Well, retro graphics are cute, but no ends in themselves. I'm still playing AMIGA games on an emulator, and would like to see one or another remake for my favourite gaming device nowadays, but give me Bioshock mobile and I'll consider upgrading to an iPod Touch 4G...
I'm very comfortable with retro and modern graphics, and I'm old enough - thankyouverymuch! An example of a game that pulls off a mix of modern and retro graphics beautifully is The Horrible Vikings which also happens to be a fun game! (Which is the most important part - I know about art for art's sake, but if the game isn't fun, it doesn't stay on my iPod no matter how good the graphics are... )
I've got a special place in my heart for 8 bit and 64 bit games - 16 bit almost looks less retro to me than both of those so I'm not really nostalgic about those. I'm 20 - not old yet, I guess.
I'm sittin' on the fence about this...and I'm 13. So, I like them sometimes, and sometimes not... They look cool, but to me, it kinda lowers the games quality, no idea why... And, surprisingly, that's probably why I still haven't bought Hook Champ...I'm always like: Wow, awesome game and so much content, but I always wish the graphics were like the picture that TimoVihola once posted in the Hook Champ thread... EDIT: found the post by Timo http://forums.toucharcade.com/showpost.php?p=696750&postcount=805 How about Hook Champ remake with Timo's graphics?
I love the charming graphics in Sword of Fargoal and Yipe 5, but I don't like the pixelated graphics in Hook Champ. I love the neat graphics in geoSpark, GeoSnake, geoDefense and Spirit, but I don't like the ugly graphics in the Vector Tanks games. So I don't think I'm able to answer your question with a yes or no. And whether people like retro or not has nothing to do with their age
If they are well made, retro graphics can be a great thing. The Space Invaders game for example, was really well made. They are even better if you can add a "next-gen" touch like in games such as Isotope.
Pixel art certainly is an artistic style choice... and when it's pulled off nicely, you just can't beat it! There's also something fun and innocent about retro-style pixel art that you don't get with the hyper-real 3D stuff. So, I think it's more than just "blocky graphics." It's a mentality. And for me especially, the retro pixel stuff is a nice escape from reality.
Retro-styled games that have excellent pixel art (Hook Champ, Canabalt) or non-anti-aliased wireframe graphics (PewPew) are awesome to me, and I'm 14. What other games with non-anti-aliased wireframe graphics are there on the appstore?...

Wireframe graphics are graphics that use only the outline of an object, with no fill or anything. Non-anti-aliased means that the pixellation isn't compensated for by "softening" the line with shading. Wikipedia should be able to define these, so go there if you want a better explanation... I'm not good at explaining stuff. And no, it would be more like Tempest.
I agree with all but hook champ, which personally I love. Hook Champ and the geoDefense series are my favorites of those listed. I am 17.
Wireframe is definitely cool stuff. Totally TRON. Certain visual problems are solved by *removing* details rather than adding them. <plug>My game Saucelifter is pretty retro-styled... a sort of "Another World" style of flat-shaded polygons.</plug> Pretty much all of my future stuff will be keeping it oldskool, too.
It's strange. Certain games that I played (not even very long ago!) like Final Fantasy IX or Chrono Cross show much more character to me than almost all modern games I've played. I'm not sure if that's *because* of the old-school graphics or because these games are just damn good, or because the soundtrack on these games is just unequalled. I still think back to the good times with FF9 and that's while I did have an Xbox 360 with modern games. I prefered playing that, actually, over modern jRPGs! Right now, I'm into Final Fantasy, and though redone, the graphics have that SNES feel. I wouldn't want it any other way. I guess, if done right, they are able to evoke a deeper emotional response in me than only "decent" HD stuff. 33 years old.
