I'm pretty much sold on the 4th generation iPod touch. I WILL be buying one next week. The specs, the HD video camera, and 3-axis gyro made me scream like a woman. But I'm still curious about this retina display. Is there a dramatic difference between the old display and the new one? Or is it just a minor improvement?
I don't own an iphone 4, but i saw one at the apple store, and the screen is amazing. I couldn't see a single individual pixel. it is VERY clear.
Never seen one in person yet... A friend of mine told me that the difference is particularly striking when you see the retina display and an older display next to each other.
It has not impressed me, to be honest. I really don't see what everyone else sees here. Now, I haven't played Mirror's Edge yet, although I bought it. And I haven't played Ultimate Spiderman. People are saying that these are the best two retina display games. All the games that have been converted to retina, mostly a handful of Gameloft Games, honestly don't stand out to me as being vastly improved. It feels like maybe the screen is brighter and that's kinda it. Others feel differently though. I should put the two next to each other and then, yeah, I probably would see it. But since I don't plan on actually playing games that way. . . . Meh. I think retina will get better in the future. Just the games that they went back and added it don't seem all that impressive.
You're right, when I looked at my iPhone 4 my iPod Touch 2g looked all blocky, and I thought it was a great screen when I first got it (it still is, but the difference is tremendous).
I definately noitced a difference on my friends (compared to my first gen. ipod touch). The screen just looked soo crisp and perfect. I didnt see any games running on it, but it just looks great.
I'm in the same boat, I haven't actually seen or held the iPhone 4. Here is a pretty good video showing the difference with Retina versus all the other models:
It's really not about the games, though the graphical improvements are nice. Where the retina display really shines is reading on screen. You can literally go to the NYT home page, shrink the page to fit entirely on your screen, and read every word of the body copy. A page on iBook looks like it was actually printed on paper. It's really just amazing.
That video comparison was perfect! I was already sold though, I'm definitely upgrading my iPod 2G as soon as the 4G is released in Canada!
The change is definitely notable. There's a lot more sharpness and clarity. Like the video mentions, the folders are a good way of seeing the difference. On the iPod 3G, you can't make out the icons in the folders very well, but on the iPhone 4, you have no trouble discerning one from another. Jet Car Stunts looks incredible, and this may also be because of the A4 chip, but Nazi Zombies almost looks like an XBL Arcade game in terms of graphics.
As someone typing from an iPhone 4, the screen difference is huge. The new one is flat out sexy. Clarity is much improved, and reading sites like TA is a breeze now. You really can't appreciate the difference until you use it. Do yourself a favor and get the retina display.
Insane difference. You'll notice it right away on icons, and when I say right away I mean first glance.
Yep, there's quite a big difference. When I got my iPhone 4, I was amazed at how crisp the screen looks. And after I had played some retina display games on it, I went and played the same games on my original iPhone and the graphics looked really bad in comparison.
It's crystal clear, once you've had it in your hands and seen games like Spiderman run on it, there's no going back.
yeah i look foward to hands on reviews.. and pictures taken with teh camera. iv decided to just wait till next year for a new ipod. ( now if someone wants to get me one for Christmas.. so be it) but the 500.00 i had put away for a gen 4 ipod.. i just used the money to buy a new computer.. chris.
My wife has promised to get me the iPod 4G for Christmas! WOOHOO!! Now I just gotta deal with my crappy 2G until then...*sigh...
