Restoring iPhone 4 from 3GS Backup: Nothing works

  1. Da hell? I did a restore from my 3GS to my iPhone 4, and now nothing works. The splash screen zooms in and then it just quits immediately back to springboard. Anyone else had this problem? Should I do another restore? It did get interrupted midway through the initial restore and I just resumed, so that may have had something to do with it, but still...

I think your data is corrupted. Try it one more time but if it doesn't work then you'll need to do a fresh restore.

  3. This was a fresh restore. Newly minted iPhone 4, straight out of the box. I'm thinking it's probably corruption, too. My wife's phone is syncing now and hers got interrupted by an incoming call so we'll see if it does the same thing to hers.

You restored from another iPhone so the data isn't completely fresh. I'm going to guess that itunes didn't completely backup your old 3GS data and that's how it got corrupted. This happens to me all the time and I don't rely on keeping saves on my iPhone anymore. Game saves aren't a huge deal to me but for contacts and productivity applications I'll always keep them synced and backed up to the cloud.

  6. Yeah, turned out to be something corrupted. I did a complete restore again and it works fine now.

Glad to hear it - I had a problem with my initial restore - had to start over - I put it in airplane mode to ensure nothing came through to interrupt the restore... You would think that Apple would account for that - but who knows?

  8. I think the problem is that instead of doing an actual restore from backup, it goes and reinstalls all of your apps like a normal sync, which leaves the phone sitll monitoring calls and stuff, so it can be prone to interruption if a call comes in. I didn't even think of putting it in airplane mode though -- I'll have to do that next time.
