Hey guys, Samurai, the popular strategy board game by Reiner Knizia, is coming soon to iPhone and iPod Touch! I thought I'd post up a couple screenshots at the moment: A couple details about the app: Release Date is mid-late August Online play supported for up to 4 players App will be universal with native iPad support soon after the iPhone release For more details and info: Facebook: facebook.com/pages/Samurai-App/116067038442686 Twitter: twitter.com/conlan Info about the original board game can be found at: BGG Big thanks to current beta testers Big Albie, LordGek, mrbass, richmlow, & VeganTnt This is very exciting, and I hope to see you guys on board soon
Man, count me in. I'm a sucker for these board game apps. I have a decent collection of these at home, but I travel a lot and don't get to play them often because it's not convenient to carry around... Right now, I'm considering buying an iPad and playing these apps on it on a plane with my wife is actually an important reason why! I'll probably pick this up as soon as it hits the store, especially with the native iPad support to be added later, no dilemma here about waiting for my iPad or going for the iPod version... And online multiplayer's always a deal maker. Any idea how much it will be priced, if I may ask? And good luck on the release!
@richmlow: @Egoyan: Thanks! The app will be priced at $4.99 and will stay there even after the iPad update Hope to play you soon!
Thanks for the swift reply conlan. $4.99 I will be spending then. Here's to a hard time waking up tomorrow as I skip my morning coffee to put the saved money on the game.
Game Impressions As one lucky enough to get tapped as a tester I can confirm the game doesn't just look good, but play great with very competitive AI (it has great multiplayer support as well but I have yet to try it). I particularly liked how the tutorial gets you up to speed in the game in no time with some interactive lessons. They'll explain a rule, let you place a piece to demonstrate that rule, and then move onto the next lesson (not a lot of padding or need to play through an entire game just to learn one minor rule).
I agree, I'm a huge sucker for these board game ports and this one looks exceptional. Man this along with Ra, Neuroshima Hex and Medici (when it finally hits iPhone and iPod Touch). How can we be so lucky. What sort of online is included, asynchronous play where you can take turns with friends at your own leasure or do you need to sit down and play an entire game?
Yea Medici been playing quite a bit of lately which has just enough luck. Same with Samurai even if you choose your starting 5 tokens it still is random draws and random placement of figures so it has just enough luck while remaining extremely competitive. Once you understand scoring in Samurai you pretty much understand how to play. Also beginners usually don't throw a game like they do in Modern Art for instance. I have been playing Samurai since 2005 and so glad it is coming out for iPad and iPhone.
@Drucifer: Yep! Play is asynchronous so you can make a move at your leisure You can specify the turn limit when creating a game; there are options ranging from 5 minutes to 3 days.
As much as I love pixel art, why aren't you using the board game's graphics? Hardly matters - I'll be buying it anyway...
Yes, I definitely agree with you! I will continue to support high-quality ports of strategy board games which come out for the iPhone/iPad. =) Kingdoms Medici Modern Art Neuroshima Hex Ra Samurai Through the Desert Tigris and Euphrates ....and the list goes on!! richmlow
I'll just add to those a few more I'm looking forward to that will be coming out for iPad and iPhone. Settlers of Catan for iPad Tichu Tikal Wits and Wagers
I've been fortunate to have a closer look at the beta, too (thanks Conlan!). The KI and overall presentation are great, and what I really like, is the attention to detail shown in the user interface. This surely will turn out as a must-have for board gamers and possibly the best Knizia app to date.
God, it really is becoming hard to wait for this game. So much praise for a beta, I can't wait to get my hands on the release!
Hope this is coming along well and still on schedule for later this month. EDIT: Damn just noticed the following posted on their FB:
