Each new reign could certainly be defined as replaying, but there are some lasting effects that will carry over, positive and negative, so it's not completely starting from zero.
Brilliant fun. A great little journey of discovery with a cheeky sense of humour. The Tinder of roguelike RPGs for sure. Love it.
Hi everyone, Thanks for the great feedbacks, glad you like Reigns. The game has 3 ends, generally around year 1998 (you should get why pretty quickly). Once a game is finished, you can restart from scratch and create a new line. Yes, the cards will repeat themselves eventually, after year 1000-1200 it will be more obvious, you will recognize some cards. But you should still have some surprise along the way and you can try different paths (I hope!). To be precise, Reigns is not a "branching" narrative with paths, it's more a probabilistic system: each of your decision affects the game state, which defines the next "bag" of available cards. It enables different type of narrative, from linear stories to broad subject (like the crusade) and more evasive things (like having a lot of church powers making inquisition a lot more probable...). Also : a tester did a 110 years run, I'm around 80 years.
Note for the people who wants to reset the game: we have that, hidden, in the next update. I didn't want players to do that too easily, the interest of the game is really in a build-up from centuries to centuries. So this will be a toucharcade forum exclusive only : to reset the game, you will have to touch the screen with 2 fingers for 5 seconds. The update should be on itunes tomorrow or the day after. It also solves the music and sfx sliders not working.
Is this a game that requires someone be able to read quickly? I have an eye defect that slows me down when reading. I'm very interested in the game, but kot sure about its pacing.
Cool, thanks! I mentioned this in the upcoming thread, but I hope the game does really well for you and you are able to continue developing new things for it. That would then add to the replayability factor, not only because of things occurring at different times, but perhaps growing the population of cards to a point where there would be things you wouldn't encounter in a given run.
No, not at all, you're free to read at your own pace (you're in control of everything). It's actually quite nice to take your time to read. I will transfer the suggestion! it's a good one.
Any chance of adding a list of dueling moves learned to the gallery and such? Just hit a bug, but am unsure how to reproduce it. The memento more were all blank, and when I went into the dungeon, all the scenes were fleur de lys. Shutting down the app fixed it, so no big deal. The ransacking the hospital card is an unclear decision point. No idea what yes or no refer to.
This is all kinds of greatness. I'm not sure whether it was a lack of instructions or a general lack of intelligence on my part but I did spend the first few games thinking what am I doing and why have I bought this its rubbish but then it clicked and I've not put it down since. A lovely charming fun thing that makes me glad I'm an iOS gamer which is happening less and less these days.
One small caveat: there are a few events which impact a stat every second once chosen. If triggered, you do need to play a little bit faster afterward, otherwise you will trigger an end-game condition after a while.
Am I right in thinking that if any of the 4 stats reaches the top or bottom it's reign over? I've died plenty by stats running down to zero, but also maxed out the church and people and on both occasions reign ended (one nice, one nasty)
This is a lot of fun so far with me needing to make some brutal decisions to keep the factions level. Deaths can be sudden and out of no where (damn you son!). For some reason(s) it reminds me of Papers Please. My only issue so far....where is the damn rotate option in the settings??
Correct. If you mean to portrait, it is only available on iPad, I think. If you mean 180, it is being worked on.
It really is fun, but it's hard to appreciate that without actually trying it. You are constantly trying to juggle the resources to hang on as long as you can before the inevitable.
One of my Memento cards has a star on it, does that mean anything special? I got it from Edward the Seer's name becoming a curse word # Game has a great sense of humour
