My ipod touch 2g randombly showed the recovery screen and wont get out of it.
I tried holding the home and power button in and shutting it down many times, never work. Any solutions? Or would this need to be a apple store trip?

So you can't put it into DFU mode and iTunes doesn't recognize it, so you can't restore? Are you jailbroken?

Woah. Just because you're jailbroken doesn't mean you pirate; that's one of the worst stereotypes of iOS users. Along with the idea that all iPhone users look like this:

There are some stereotypes that just won't die.
And I think the only answer may be the Apple store, after all.

Yeah, I pity the jb app developers now.. Apple thinks they are evil, and the "app developer supporters" think so too. bah.

to keep "on topic": go youtube a video for getting into DFU mode. Usually it's a video of a JB app with some sort of timers. Follow the instructions and hopefully you'll get iTunes to recognize it and do a restore.

If you have iTunes 9 or later, iTunes automatically will backup your iPod every time you sync. So if you last synced a week ago, your iPod will be just like it was 1 week past.

If you haven't synced in a while though, you might be in trouble.
