The library of RPGs for the DS is vast and seemingly limitless. I managed to grab a DSi via a friend for £80, which seems to be a decent price. I haven't really read into any handheld RPGs though, never having owned one previously, so are there any 'must-have' RPGs on the DS?

Those aren't RPGs. They are roguelikes. There is a big difference.

Orcs & Elves and Deep Labyrinth aren't roguelikes.

And according to Wikipedia: "The roguelike is a sub-genre of role-playing video games" :p

Then he'd be buying the same thing about 6 times
If we're delving into sub-genres I nominate the Castlevania games :p

Sorry, Castlevania falls into the category of action-adventure which isn't a sub-genre of role-playing games... ;)

    Doing nothing of importance.
    Somewhere
I havn't (strangely) played too many RPG's on my DS. The only ones I actually played that much of were the Mario and Luigi games, both of which I strongly suggest, as well as The World Ends With You, which was fantastic. I played a bit of Final Fantasy III when I rented it, but that one became a bit tedious (to me at least), and I was mostly distracted by the fact that I had also bought Tony Hawk's Underground, which is an old favorite of mine. I'm going to try to play both Final Fantasy 4 and Dragon Quest IX which are supposedly great games as well. Unfortunately the DSi can't play GBA games, otherwise I'd also recommend picking up Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga which was the best of the three, and Sword of Mana which I enjoyed even more than Secret of Mana.

I also just remembered that Chrono Trigger had an official port to the DS, and is a definite must-have if you want a great RPG. I just got hooked on the SNES version of it, and they're the exact same game.

Just been playing this the last couple weeks. A must have. Also the other DQ for DS is great, I also agree with the as mentioned Chrono Trigger and World Ends with You, the latest Zelda was also quite fun.

Thing is, RPG is such a big category that you will like specific types and not others so it is best just to do a little reading and see what appeals to you.

Castlevania is an action RPG. It's got more RPGs elements than Zelda, anyway. For the record, I don't consider Zelda an RPG, but an adventure game.

Mario is certainly not an RPG...

I think I'll have a look at DQ, since it seems to be well recieved, as well as TWEWY just to see what all the hype is about. Any word on the FF remakes? I played through quite a lot of IV, but never got round to finishing it.

There is a trilogy of Mario and Luigi games that are actually RPG's. I think the latest for the DS was - Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Was pretty fun.
