To think that the guy running TA supports this model makes me wanna puke. The whole mobile industry is screwed up.

We'll see. If it shoots to the top of the charts (grossing + free) we'll know Eli actually knows the industry and you don't. If it doesn't I'll buy Eli a 2 week vacation.

I feel like my money is safe.

I support games being made and this industry continuing to thrive. It's a hard pill to swallow, but developers by and large no longer care about the "core" gamer who wants a game with infinite replay-ability at the lowest price possible. They've moved on to the much larger pool of people who are beyond happy playing an awesome game they got for free, telling their friends about it, and flipping out a few bucks when there's something they want.

I think you people who are the most angry about this would benefit immensely by reading sites like Gamasutra or PocketGamer.biz to understand where the people who actually run this industry's heads are at. If you follow trends in the market, none of this will be surprising.

Too true, but the only people who care about the industry are the people who earn from it. People who love games are having their hobbies destroyed.

Supports this model? You are reading into it what you want to read. Eli is correctly pointing out that with the state of the IOS market you either get big budget games like this or more likely than not, you don't get them at all.

I doubt he "enthusiastically" supports the model they are using in this game as it's one of the grabbiest I've ever come across but if they had gone for something a little closer to CSR racing which was quite successful I'd have been happier.

Personally I think making you wait 6 hours for repairs within your first hour of gameplay and asking you pay above the lowest unit of IAP purchasing to remove that timer ONCE is awful. (14 units I was asked for, you get 10 units for 1.49)

The truth though will be in the sales charts in three weeks time, if it sits at #1 in top grossing chart the week after the worldwide release it will (sadly) show EA were right for their business model to price it that way. If it's not then we can hope they tune/tweak the settings, I'd give them some money if it was much more reasonable.

Sad but true. We will see how the market reacts. As a developer im interested to see how much people are really willing to pay for a free iap game and EA are really testing the limits. Lets see what happens!

Ok, how do I "trick" the timer? I changed my time on the iPad but no difference. TQ. 6 hours is ridiculous.

This is actually how I play most (if not all) iOS games that I'm not actively in some marathon play session for a review or something. There's just so much out there that I'm either switching between games or just pulling my phone out for little five minute bursts when I have time here and there.

For this sort of play style, Real Racing 3 and similar games are fantastic because they're totally free games for me. If I paid $10 for RR3, I'd still be playing it the same way in that I'd load it up, do a few races, and get on with my life in the real world. Instead, now I just do a few races, do something else, and get a push alert reminding me that I can play again. As much as people hate to believe it, it seems like this is the way the vast majority of people seem to digest mobile games... So, to your typical person, free to play isn't that offensive at all.

I can see how this is annoying if you're the kind of person who sits down and plays one game straight through for eight hours, but if that's the kind of thing you're in to I'm not even sure iOS is the platform for you.

    Sorry,but that's nonsense to me.
I played games like the room and little inferno in one setting, with dimmed lights and a good glass of wine. The same goes for the great collection of rpg's available and i can't count the evening sessions i spend with RR2.
I agree that most people play in short burtsts but to say that IOS isn't the platform for playing long play sessions just doesn' hold up.

If you play iOS games in massive marathon sessions this isn't the game for you and the sooner you come to grips with that fact the better?

Sounds like fire monkeys may be confusing there market audience. make a game for hard core driving fans. make it difficult to play for long periods of time.

At least they wont get eye strain

But thats nothing to do with ios as a whole is it, thats down to the game. Saying if you enjoy long game sessions then ios isnt for you is rubbish

This is what it has come to. I just had a huge wreck and it seemed more beneficial to exit and kill the app than to continue playing and suffer the wait time.

I was talking about this statement, not this game:
I can see how this is annoying if you're the kind of person who sits down and plays one game straight through for eight hours, but if that's the kind of thing you're in to I'm not even sure iOS is the platform for you.

    Sorry for derailing.

You do realize some us play games on our iPads, right? In fact, I rarely play games on my iPhone because the screen is too small. And yes, I often play games on my iPad for an hour or so.

That's why I gravitate toward games like Baldur's Gate, Battle of the Bulge, Black Ops Zombies, MC4, GTA Vice City, and Minecraft.

If freemium is used for more and more "normal" games, then it does make me less excited about iOS as a gaming platform and I will spend less money there. It is rather depressing.

So Eli, thank you for honest assessment. Clearly RR3 isn't for me. Dropping from my watchlist.
