This is kind of funny to be honest. Hey, I understand you don't like the game and that's fine but a lot of us on this thread really like the game.

I won't call you a hater, because I don't think you are but to say EA is ruining gaming, that is extremely laughable.

First of all this is a mobile game. To experience real immersive, in depth gaming. I will go on Steam for PC gaming and play games or my Ps3, etc...

I'll pay my one time fee and get a truly great gaming experience on those platforms.

With mobile gaming, there are plenty of games that are great experiences and awesome games in general. Currently there is Heroes and Castles which is 1.99 and a great game ( among others)

As far as RR3 is concerned, I have both previous versions of this game and this current version is the best, imo. The different race modes are a blast and a nice variation. I'm new to this game, played for 3 hours straight without having to have wait times. With my winnings I was able to buy another card, therefore eliminating wait times in general.

I'm not sure if EA tweaked the wait times for February 28th but for a freemium game, their system is absolutely fair and if you're a half decent driver, ( without assists) you should be able to level up and play this game with paying a single iAP. Normally a game like this would be about 6.99 on release. So I guess everybody wins ( generally ) on RR3.

I'm a level 4, and have two cars without paying any iAP's and my wait time has been 5 mins. This game is awesome.

Great post and I agree completely with you. I was expecting this game to be a freemium mess because I'm still not a big fan of freemium... but this game is fair and the best racing game on iOS.

BTW, if anyone wants to add me on Gamecenter my User tag is FightingGI.

Woo hoo! My advice to new comers? Pick the nissan, race till you have the focus then drive the focus while upgrading the nissan. Once the nissan is top spec, save up for the challenger and once you have it upgrade the focus. Then challenger to bmw. Once bmw is upgraded, gold it all :)

Also, setting brake assist on low feels very much like brake assist for real racing 2. REALLY speeds you up compared to high which makes you drive like a grandmother.

I agree with you guys from what I have seen so far.

Once you get a handful of cars, the paywall is gone. While one car is repairing, you just hop into another one and keep going. I haven't even SPENT a single gold yet, I'm just stockpiling it for a rainy day.

The people that spend money on IAP are probably the short term people that just want a cool car to bomb around in for a day or two and then they'll move on.

This tells me that these people are providing the income so that the dedicated long term players like us get the game for free. Thanks, chumps! Has anyone else thought of it from that perspective?

I usually though , from my perspective and from what other people have posted before, that if you actually like game, you give at least a bit of money to developers as a "thank you" for good game, or just to support them in future updates/development

Absolutely. I'm not saying that there is no chance I will ever buy gold. I'm just saying that, so far, I've been able to play as much as I've wanted to without needing to spend any gold. My gold wallet has only gone up since I started. The timers haven't been an issue for me at all and will only become less and less of an issue as we expand our garages.

So, while IAP can be gross at times I do not mind this particular implementation at all.

When it comes to buying IAP specifically for the reason to throw some cash out as a thank you, it depends on the developer too. Personally, it's pretty easy for me to not feel guilty about not giving EA money. :)

Yes, IAP implementation is made so it won't affect gameplay much ( if you get more cars ASAP ofc ;) ), it is made more to rely on people who want particular car(s) in beginning and don't want to "grind" for them, like me , I'm just a sucker for Aventador, couldn't resist the urge  to just watch it in shop.

Ok time for an update on my time with RR3. Hit a few paywalls early on because I was repairing stuff so I could clear events and get gold. Eventually though I stopped servicing my car at all because the hit to performance didn't matter as much as fixing a windscreen or something else that eats away at the top speed. Anyway, I did a lot of grinding because honestly I didn't want another piece of garbage car so I saved up... ran my Silvia into the ground and locked in on BMW Z4 M Coupe. Oh what a difference it is racing with a decent car. Plus the BMW was not only good for the Street Spec Skirmish, but could be raced instead of my Silvia in the Road Car International. Add to that I could race in the Prime Production Matchup and in all 3 groups of events I was pretty much going to have the best car in the game and it's made earning 1st a lot easier. With the new car too I grabbed enough cash such that when I retired for the night I put the Silvia in for upgrades. I did a second round of upgrades (engine and drivetrain only, haven't messed with Brakes or Tires as they don't seem to give as big of a boost) this morning and it's now able to be very competitive. I dominated the drag race even on a bad launch.

I think this is a case of one step forward and three steps back.

    SO progress...

2 Cars, 1 decently upgraded, 1 awesome right out of the gate
29% done in Pure Stock Challenge with 1st on 6 events
11% done in Road Car International with 1st on 3 events
~15K$R's and 47 gold in the bank
    Driver Level 7

Not bad for a first day. I did hit the paywall a few times but once I figured out that servicing was completely unnecessary for me to win or at least get a 3rd place victory (or hey even just earn a little extra $R) then I could race as much as I wanted since repairs are instant and they seem to affect top speed more than servicing. Just no drag-racing or high speed challenges because it's pointless with a worn out car.

I have to give a big THANKS to Connector. Dude those times you have were so bad that when I faced you in a head to head race, I nearly was able to lap you. It was nice to have a break from some of the top folks on my list (such as this one dude that was hugely responsible for the Project Gotham series).

As for a grade... I can't grade it yet, but in the original release a couple weeks ago I would have said this was a 2/5 because of the wait timers on repairs, how quickly servicing was needed, and how excessive the wait timers got on servicing or other things. The killer though overall for me was the AI because of how much it compounded the wait timers. Much of that is corrected. The AI is not great, but it's better than it was and a quick cut of a corner instead of breaking lets the car bypass the AI. I've gotten fairly decent at avoiding the AI, but often it does things a real driver would never do unless they were the backup car on a team and they needed to take out the top guy on the track.

I'm actually leaning towards agreeing with Eli. I'm not sure it's a 4/5.. it may only be a 3/5 because of all the modes cut out from the past game (no multiplayer, no HDMI/AppleTV Airplay or splitscreen, no qualifying laps, dumb AI, ... etc, the list goes on and on of what was cut)... but I'll need to play both games more to better compare the packages because as many positive things I can say about RR3, it's hard for me to ignore all the things that this game doesn't do that the last one did.

    The end is nigh!

I'm starting to feel like the crazy guy on a street corner holding a "THE END IS NIGH!" sign. I get that a lot of people like the game. I'd like to like the game. I really would. I just can't get past the micro transaction crap. I really feel like this game could signal the beginning of the end for this platform as a viable hardcore (although I hate that term, but you know what I mean) portable gaming device. I suppose that I just have to accept the fact that the majority of people want to play simple games in short bursts for free on these devices. That's cool, there are literally tens of thousands of games that cater to that demographic, but there were also games for people that were willing to pay a premium for a full-featured "hardcore" experience. Real Racing used to represent the latter. Now it represents the former. The inevitable success of this will, I'm afraid, signal to developers that the only way to be successful on this platform is to release "free" IAP laden games. If that happens, I'm out. I used this phrase to describe RR3 in a different thread, but I'll repeat it here...it's a beautiful diamond enveloped in a flaming turd.

Yeah, since the last update my main menu on my iPad 3 also stutters when scrolling. Game is fine though.

First, I have no idea what "fact" I'm supposed to have "made up", but I will happily show you screens from my iPad showing my game time, on track time, and earnings. Again, and I cannot stress enough, share your GC username and join us on TSM races. You'll make FAR more than racing alone, trust me.

I also agree that it's a shame iOS games are being forced down the Freemium route but sadly the App Sync generation and the "I'll wait for the sale" brigade (for £2.99 games) have caused this.

My app collection contains the likes of The World Ends With You, both the SD and HD versions of DoDonPachi Resurrection, all the Final Fantasy titles and much more. I don't wait for sales, but if one pops up when a game I want occurs down the line I snap it up.

    sizzlakalonji,

I somewhat agree. But even if the entire app market dies into a pit of IAP freemium (or worse, Paymium) games then I'm not exactly giving up. I mean, I have 2400+ apps and most of them are games. I only know this because I'm in the process of backing up the second half of them right this moment and I can see what I have downloaded already. There are so many great games I own that I haven't played they could shut the appstore down tomorrow (or whenever I finish my big backup) and I would have enough games to play as a serious gamer than I'd ever get through in the next 5 or more years without even bothering with the freemium bs.

The big difference between the appstore and my past in console/handheld gaming is that in the past you maybe got a decent new game randomly through the year and then a boat load during the last quarter of the year in time for the holiday shopping season. But with iOS, I'm getting new games pretty much every single week and that's without even bothering with many of the coin infested offerings. There's so much good stuff that even though RR3 has gone to the casual market, this market is just mindblowingly massive compared to past consoles & handhelds. It pains me at times to look over the fence at the 3DS & PSV and see just how slow the release cycle is for good games and how you have to wait a long time between a game being announced and it showing up in the market. A new dev can pop up over night and have some great new game out on iOS and just dominate conversation. It's so refreshing over waiting and waiting and waiting on games. Yes we have some of those on iOS too (where is Phoenix Wright HD Collection?) but those titles are easier to forget when there's just so dang much good stuff to play.

So some folks can say the whole market is going this way, but I don't think it will. Yes there will be more that convert to IAP subsidies to pay for game development, but to me the real focus of most of my game time is on the games made by small dev teams that actually put something together thats fun and fresh... and those guys can't survive on the freemium model since that only works well for the bigger companies with the most profitable games being the kind of stuff that only casuals would want to play.

I understand your concerns for the platform in general, I do, but...

What is it about the IAP in this particular game that bothers you so much? Is it simply that it exists, or has it actually directly hindered your enjoyment in some way?

For me, the IAP is completely behind the curtain. I have not run in to a paywall, and I never will with the current number of cars that I have. There will always be a car available to drive and my garage isnt even in to the double digits yet. On top of that, there is nothing in the game that I can't accomplish without IAP. All I have to do is play the game and I can get all the cars/races.

It would be one thing if you couldn't proceed without IAP but that is very much not the case. Isn't this an example of IAP done (mostly) right?

Also, the vocal minority complains that they want premium titles without IAP...but then when they come out, they don't sell. Why? Well, that's why it's called the vocal minority.

I would have hated this game a month ago. When I didn't have a bunch of other games to play and didn't have an infant to take care of, but right now, it's perfect. I need to stop playing frequently anyway, so when it's time to change a diaper or help the little guy get ot sleep, that when I service. I am seriously loving the competitiveness of seeing people on GC that I need to beat, and knowing when they've bested me. Totally worth the price, even if I end up buying currency.

P.S. add me (Derrythe) on GC.

So someone has already found a way to bypass the iAP, played against a friend of a friend with the Agera R. And I know for a fact he didn't purchase any iAPs...or save up enough gold.

Currently I think the system is ok. If you have more than one car it is getting better. Service times could be a bit smaller but not a big thing.

    Add me on GC (Protagonist)
