Doesn't seem to make sense for this game so hopefully it's just the screenshots. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,716 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #9 squarezero, Feb 18, 2016 It's on landscape mode, at least on iPhone. Can't speak to controller support; touchscreen controls are virtual stick only -- they seem about as responsive as on Castle of Illusion, which wasn't bad at all. It's a pretty bare bones port, as far as I can tell, but it does look good. Looking forward to spending more time with the game . curtisrshideler Well-Known Member Patreon Bronze Jul 30, 2011 3,097 25 48 Male Video Producer/Editor Texas http://twitter.com/curtneedsaride #10 curtisrshideler, Feb 18, 2016 It's landscape. If you're able to watch the preview video on the App Store, you'll be able to see. I think the choice of portrait preview images wasn't the best idea. The controls are better than I was expecting, but the truth is you're going to die sometimes because of the controls. And there's this weird thing where you want to select the world you want to play next and the button you need to use is semi-hidden. Yeah it's hard but thats Rayman. Jmartinez41 Member Sep 19, 2014 23 0 0 #14 Jmartinez41, Feb 18, 2016 Thank you. This is what I was trying to say. The review is a complaint about the difficulty. y2kmp3 Well-Known Member Jun 25, 2010 1,784 3 38 #15 y2kmp3, Feb 19, 2016 I, too, am very ambivalent on whether or not this port will work well using virtual controls. The early Rayman games were extremely hard. If you find the more recent games in the series, like Rayman Legends, already difficult, you will have a lot of difficulty playing the earlier ones to completion. There is definitively nostalgic call here. I am just not certain how well the port actually plays beyond the initial levels. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #16 metalcasket, Feb 19, 2016 The port is quite excellent and the game still holds up incredibly well today, boasting (still) innovative animations, interactions between characters, great exploration and gorgeous levels. It's EASILY worth $5 and I wholeheartedly recommend it... ...but I'm in the same boat as Carter Dotson and his 3/5 review. This was a totally unnecessary release. I know this is just a mobile release of a classic game in the same vein as DotEmu's releases and whatnot, but seriously...if you're attacking Carter's review, you've either not played the game recently or are wearing rose-tinted glasses. While (as I mentioned above) Rayman still holds up incredibly well, there's a reason why games like Mario and Sonic have been ported to every platform under the sun multiples times, in countless editions, while Rayman hasn't...it's frustrating as hell. Not hard. FRUSTRATING. I grew up in the golden age of video games where everything but the kitchen sink was thrown at you, but Rayman's level designs don't allow for a lot of smooth movement, the leaps of faith are annoying and worst of all; the enemy placement and spawning is borderline insulting. Shit like five enemies on foot walking toward you along with three flying enemies in the air...and Rayman's crawl-like pace? This isn't a bullet hell shooter, and if it was...it would be a terrible one. Neither Rayman's movement, nor his attacks lend to what's being thrown at you and the beautiful thing is that both Rayman Origins and Rayman Legend (which are masterful games on their own, and an INCREDIBLE evolution of a series) prove that and fix every and any faults with this original release. I'm also putting aside the mobile games because I don't think it's a fair comparison (auto-runners vs. full-fledged platformer). Cut Carter some slack guys! Yes, this is a brilliant game and a piece of gaming history that I (again) wholeheartedly recommend (especially at a measly $5), but it always had its flaws. I mean, hell...this is a quote from back in the day: "if you were just watching somebody else playing the game you could be easily fooled into thinking this was the best thing to appear on the Saturn for quite some time. However, in reality, it's a bit too dull a bit too often, and at times, it's just plain irritating and damned difficult." This is a port we wanted...but certainly didn't need. y2kmp3 Well-Known Member Jun 25, 2010 1,784 3 38 #17 y2kmp3, Feb 20, 2016 Well said, metalcasket! When it comes to classic titles, we are sometimes at risk of looking through rose-tinted glasses. As I said before (which metalcasket concurred), players who actually played the original Rayman game (as I did) would remember how incredibly difficult and unfair (even absurd in some levels) the platforming elements were in that game. To the series' credit, the series has matured a lot since the original. The later Rayman games are far more forgiving (though still difficult), and many of the platforming elements have been redesigned to make them more playable. bestkevin Well-Known Member Jul 4, 2012 190 0 0 #18 bestkevin, Feb 20, 2016 Last edited: Feb 20, 2016 Where's the punch button in game?
