I still have the membrane keyboard from that thing. I replaced it with this big 60's era keyboard I got from an electronics surplus place that must have come from NASA or something... it had buttons and lights and toggle switches and inscrutable labels all over it. Wish I still had THAT. It was awesome. Remember how when you'd mash the membrane keys, it would often cause the external 16k ram pack to disconnect? That was almost as much fun as the "now you see it, now you don't" tape storage. Josh: The Spectrum was the next big thing after the zx81 I think. I remember reading about it, but I kind of dropped out of computers at that point to pursue career as a Metal God.
Says the Sinclair 1000 was actually the North American version of the ZX-81 Funny - we didn't know it, but we were both programming on that lame piece of crap at the same time! And Squarezero... Of course I was 7 years old and you were probably in your teens... My uncle always got me the latest obsolete computer every year so I could play with it. I had the TI-99 after the Sinclair.
Same thing, though I think that the Timex was never available as a kit, I don't think. I had the 16k expansion pack on mine, which, come to think of it, was about the size of an iPhone. So slow that you had the option of shutting down the screen redraw to speed up processing. Tape drives worked about half the time, so I got used to hand coding my games every time I wanted to play something. But the thing was, it was a bit like owning a '72 VW Bug: you could easily learn everything about it and feel like the system was completely under your control. Hard to say the same thing about an iPhone, much less about a PC/Mac. I must have been about 14 years old at the time.
Same here. I think I gave mine away to a neighbor when my parents bought me an Apple IIe. And that's when I discovered Wizardry and Ultima (which brings us back to Ravensword).
Wizardry literally made me a high school dropout... I'd park in the computer lab and skip all my classes to play 8 or 9 hours a day. I really wanted an apple II, of my own, but couldn't scrape up the cash. I think it was like 4 grand in todays money. I was pondering putting Gilgamesh's Tavern in Ravensword at one point, as an homage, but thought it might get me sued. I also wanted to have a Tiltowait spell.
All that is like a foreign language to me! It was only until I googled 'ZX-81' that I even found out what it was. I was -13 years old when that 'blocky piece of junk' was released.
Gilgamesh's Tavern! Man, you smacked me in the head with the nostalgia stick. I have to say, as much as I like playing Wizardry, it was Ultima that really captured my imagination; I just loved the idea of having an open world -- heck, worlds -- for me to explore. It's just great to have a miniature version of that on my phone .
I guess that was before the TRS-80 and the Tandy 1000? Those are the first computers I remember having.
We just hit the MOST VIEWED thread for an upcoming game - behind Eliminate - on Touch Arcade! #2 and going strong! Thanks for looking everyone! Now Apple lets get this App out so we can take it out of the upcoming section! -Josh
No!!! It can't be releast to i get a 9p itunes card . I need 9p more on my itunes . Why don't they sell 9p itunes card. I would have the money if i didn't buy that pocket god DLC by accident .
So if it's "in review" what does mean as far as time till it hits the app store assuming it is approved? Just trying to see if I need to go buy an iTunes card today or if there is no rush...
