Mission Mode = Play through unlocked levels, with two continues, for a high score (ie; your scores ARE uploaded). You can also keep playing after you complete the selected level. Training Mode = play through unlocked levels, with an infinite amount of continues, for practice (ie; your scores are NOT uploaded). You can also keep playing after you complete the selected level.
you have to use the SELECT and START buttons on the 8-bitty as your main action buttons in the game. not sure that counts as playing well. game IS awesome though.
That's because 1:1 relative touch is "natural" as constant-speed joystick movements. Don't forget original cabinet has only 8 direction (as most of analogic controls hardware), so 'Arcade Touch' is not enought to have gameplay experience similar to original. Surely iCade is the right choise for that I would like to take this discussion to suggest to have a look at EpicForce shutmups. All of them have free lite ver avaiable.
Fun game..but I forgot how frustrating it can get too. Yeah, I notice the slight delay in the "fast touch" controls too. Its not enough to get me killed or anything, but if the fast touch controls is included, I wish it would be more responsive. I do wish the DotEmu would consider an option for easy mode, or a mode with unlimited continues (or at least Cave's mode of earning more continues as you get game over). The way the game is currently, I don't think I'll ever beat any of these 4 games. Anyways, still a good game, even though I can't even beat the second stage of all games yet...
Ha... Just wait until you start going for score... =oP The scoring systems, like all other shmups with great scoring, definitely ramp up the challenge as well as the replay value. =oP
Let me explain. If a game is touch-native (i.e. Infinity Gene) then swiping around your ship together with your finger is fully "functional" to the game. If a game is NOT touch-native there is a price to pay. If you port a joystick-based game on a touch device you've already broken a rule, so in my opinion we have 3 choise: 1. pretending to use a non-existent joystick; 2. use your finger at not constant speed; 3. iCade.
Actually I really would like a multi-touch option. I always have one finger controlling my plane so if I could touch with one other finger to release a bomb it would be nice. Right now it's nearly impossible for me to get a bomb off when I really need it.
Really would like separate leaderboards for different controls. It's an entirely different game with icade and arcade controls.
I played Raiden on iPad + iCade of a friend of mine (I'm evaluating to do the same), AWESOME!. Original controls are the best option, so in that case(s) I have to agree with you. On the other hand 1:1 relative touch on iPhone is still the less-precarious choise in my opinion.
Do you use hdmi with icade? How does it look on tv? I just got the duo gamer wireless joystick, it rocks, but may have to buy an icade too to compare them.
Oh yeah, that's right off my recommendation. Haha I'm seriously thinking about icade too now that I got hdmi and duo gamer wireless joystick. Seems like an icade would be the next step in my crazy ipad tech demo console. Yeah, let me know in the hdmi thread. Thanks, if icade works well, would love to play Raiden with an old style joystick.
I think in some cases the "old" joystick is better than any "new" control system, and the atmosphere of a real cabin is beautiful (especially if you are over 40 like me). Raiden new easy mode is a good thing for no-hardcore shutmps players, and keep it off the Leaderboards is a good idea. Well done, DotEmu!
