These crazy shmups did nothing but piss me off at first, but switching screen modes sure made a world of difference! That extra finger space at the bottom of the screen makes things a LOT more manageable. And if DotEmu's listening, it'd be awesome to see Raiden II, Viper Phase 1 & Raiden DX added as in-app-purchases at some point in the distant future.
Impressions After spending a week with the game, I must say it's a pretty good collection for the price. All the games run really well. With that said, let me get into the issues I do have: - One to one controls are off. Period. Even when running on an iPhone 5 with nothing else in the background. Not to sound overly critical, but its a shame that more notes werent taken from Cave and others regarding this. It's a such a cliche falling back on the fact that this is an old collection that was ported for touch screen and it would make the game 'too easy' - well, so were all the games made by Cave. I believe the controls are only 'perfect' for those using an iCade. From what I've experienced, controls appear to be at their best when moving slow. - When moving fast across the screen, there's a bit of lag from the time you stop your finger to when the ship slows its movement and then completely stops. Why it slows its movement (lag stop) before hand is beyond me. - There is an issue with vertical movement where my finger will pass the ship. Also if Im using the Original Aspect ratio, if I have placed my finger on the actual playing screen and drag it far to the bottom area and attempt to move up, that movement doesnt register until my finger practically on top of the border between the two areas. - Difficulty settings - seven were offered with Raiden Fighters Aces for Xbox 360...ranging from tons of bullets down to none. There's no reason why this couldnt be done with this game. Give us Easy at the very least. - Adding credits / unlimited continues - again, offered with Raiden Fighters Aces...on top of this, only people with iCades can add credits or am I missing something here?? - Hidden Ships for Raiden Fighters - unlocked right away in Raiden Fighters Aces, why not in this game? And what about the ability to select the hidden 'slave' ships? I know all that sounds 'bitchy' but at the end of the day, I gladly would have paid $20 to have this game 'perfect' as well as bluetooth co-op as seen with Blazing Star.
Hi DotEmu, I just updated to the latest patch for the game, but the menu is still all error messages... I'm using iPhone4S with iOS 6. And this time I even tried changing my language setting to english but with no avail... I can't post pictures on the forum to show you this issue, but I can email it to you if you need it. Thanks again! look forward to your reply!
+1 Couldn't said it better myself. Don't get me wrong this is still one of the best non Cave shmups on iOS but it could be even more awesome.
Regarding the controls and 1:1 movement. It's on purpose that its not exactly 1:1, the ships doesn't move with the same speed, that's the whole point of choosing a fast ship with less firepower for instance. If it was exactly 1:1 this strategy decision, which is a big deal in the game would completely be ruined. For me, it was just a matter of a couple of games, and I got used to it. I don't understand why every game have to be nerfed to please iOS gamers that's been spoiled by no challenge games by Cave and similar. Rise to the challenge.
Your reason for it not being exactly 1:1 was negated as soon as the developers included 'Fast Touch' controls, therefore it's not a strategy, it's incomplete development...The movement speed stat is practically irrelevant with every ship as you would have noticed if you had actually played using the default Fast Touch setting. It's tactically inefficient constantly having to re-adjust my finger during vertical movement simply because my finger slips past the ship when using original aspect ration video options. You also failed to acknowledge the fact that without implementing 1:1 (or their attempt of) controls AND selling for a low price, they would be trying to sell an extremely niche genre to today's casual gamers - like myself, that simply dont have time to master movement restrictions (that are perfect for a joystick yet have been converted for a touch device), but rather pick up the game and play for 10 - 20 mins at a time without worrying about movement lag. I believe that we can all agree that a physical joystick beats a virtual one any day of the week. Saying that the game would be ruined if it had exact 1:1 is like saying any other games PORTED to iOS are ruined for having 1:1 controls. Those games are actually more enjoyable and if I was truly looking to challenge myself (and had oodles of money), I would either buy an iCade and play with true controls, or actually build a cabinet with PCB boards and play it on that. Nerfed for iOS? what game hasnt been nerfed to some degree for these devices???? Oh, and Cave and others spoiling gamers? Hahaha, you mean spoiling them with great controls and options? Last time I checked those were somewhat of an industry standard that I'll take any day. By the way, heres a challenge for you since you think Cave games are so easy - Bug Princess 2 Black Label, God Mode, Hell Difficulty...get at me when you've no miss cleared the first stage...that's if youre willing to 'rise to the challenge'
Yeah..the main thing holding me back from this collection is all the comments about the difficulty. I don't really have the time and patience now to replay the same levels over and over again. The great thing about Cave's offerings is the varied difficulties that allows even noobs/casual people to see the end of the game while allowing hardcore people insane challenge as well. I actually hope an "easy" mode with unlimited continues is added.. =P
I was always intimidated by Cave's games and then found that they were actually more approachable than I thought on the lower difficulties. Never thought I could get to the end of one of their games based on what I had heard before I actually played one. And I have so I'm over that wall that was once there. That said, these games are hard, but I don't think they're extremely difficult. I've been able to make it to at least like the second level of each (I think). In summary, I love shumps but generally suck ass at them. So I guess I feel if I can play for even for 5 minutes or so before I'm history, I'm doing good.
I'm surprised this app is not getting more love? Come on people! Can't seem to get to the outer right stages (after lv40) in raiden jet, any tips? Not sutlre what I'm doing wrong.
Heh, it's pretty weird how I would dump huge amount of coins into arcade machines learning a game and still hesitate paying a measly 5 bucks to be able to play 4 good games anywhere and time I want and for free forever.
If you go to mission mode and tap on the locked levels, it will tell you the requirements to unlock. lvl 15 for example, you have to no-miss the first two levels or die only once and have some technical points. The requirements make it sound like you only have to "not die" on that particular level to unlock the harder tier, but it really means you have to no-miss all the way from the beginning to that point.
this was out for two weeks and nobody told me? and for $5 i now have an arcade cabinet with 4 raiden titles.. dowsers (icade love) for some raiden love, see revstu's articles on raiden 2dx and raiden 3 http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/raiden3/raiden3.htm http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/raidendx.htm he's also done a series overview for retro gamer
