The first Rage game for the iPhone will be a small "show-off" sort of title, with a larger game due out next year to coincide with the big game's release.

    Checkmate.

It can't be too much larger if there's a 2gig file size limit for apps. Or has that limit been upped?

Games are getting so damn big... :(

Possibilty this game right now is just a mode called "Mutant Bash Tv" and the next game will be either a new mode but bigger/longer or a actual port of the Consoles- Like Resident Evil 4 Chapters etc.

Lol. Oh, how I wish I'd gotten a bigger iPod... Instead I had to spend about 30 minutes last week trying to make space for the big games that are coming out. I managed to free up 2.7gigs. Hopefully that'll be enough for Infinity Blade, Mutant Bash TV, and The Shadow Sun (or Aralon).

I have a 32 GB iPhone with 22 GB free space. How do you use all this space up?

In my original post I stipulated that for the same level designs, the file size wouldn't change all that much. Obviously changing the level designs will change the textures and thus the file size.

No matter how complex the AI it is still just lines of code, strings of text. Think about this: how big is a text file containing 10k lines? Now how big is an image from your camera? I wouldn't be too surprised if a single hi-res texture was bigger.

Carmack only says id will not be porting Rage in its entirety to iOS. He doesn't say that a bigger game isn't going to happen. They could for instance make a prequel to Rage or a side story using a different character that wouldn't be the full version of Rage, but still more fully featured.Having said that, one must assume that the likelihood of this 2nd game ever happening will depend on how well MBTV does.

+1, that would be sweet. If you do want a rather awesome looking post apocalyptic racer for iOS, take a look at Race After 1977. :D

We're just going have to agree to disagree, because we clearly have different opinions on this topic.

    500gigs. :p

I have seen some massive AI scripts. But yeah, the AI coding for an iOS game is likely significantly smaller, and less complex.

But for a full Rage experience on an iOS device, id Software would have to chop down a large chunk of the coding (not enough processing power to run it all), and over compress all of the textures so they'd fit within the 2gig limit. Or they would have to redo the texture maps on a lot of the objects so they'd refer to a smaller set of images.

The work wouldn't be worth the payoff.

Yeah they can get fairly big depending on the AI used, but not that big unless they have millions of lines of code! As you say, this is likely not all that complex - its almost certainly scripted too which simplifies it a lot.

As Carmack said in his blog post. ;)
