Some of us have already been there, done that and bought the T-Shirt with laser disc games in the 80s and want a little more gameplay with our movie. (Yes, I know it's not cinematic footage. It just might as well be.)
Do you like any of the simple casual games like Angry Birds, Doodle Jump, or Cut The Rope? What sold me on Mutant Bash TV was the comparison IGN made with those games. Yeah, their gameplay may be simple, but they're still a lot of fun.
No. Obviously, others feel differently. But for me, the whole .99c mini-game craze, not happening. Then again, I'm not neccessarily bothered by the rails. It's all about whether on not it's used properly. I would be more inclined to reserve judgment until after I've played it.
That's comparing apples to beef stew. You can't break everything down to "simple gameplay" and expect to achieve some level of equivalency and more than you could say Psycho was similar to Alien because they were both movies somebody died in, and this is a perfect example: Loved Angry Birds, hated Doodle Jump, loved Cut the Rope, and will hate this game, and in all cases it is because the gameplay either was or was not entertaining to me. Angry Birds and Cut the Rope were wonderfully entertaining. Doodle Jump was dreadfully dull and repetitive. Rage will be a rail shooter, a style of game I find dreadfully dull and repetitive, if for different reasons than Doodle Jump. Yes, once upon a time I didn't mind Virtua Cop and House of the Dead, but they got old fast, and modern snazzy graphics isn't going to get me interested in them again.
There aren't any rules written anywhere that say John Carmack can't make a really good simple game in the spirit of Angry Birds with console quality graphics. If you flip back a couple of pages, you'll see that I wasn't too happy about the gameplay either. But after seeing the gameplay video, and reminding myself of the $1.99 price tag, I think I could get into this. Even though it's on rails, there still seems to be a lot to enjoy and do. You have to aim, reload at just the right times, and hit bonuses to improve your score. It comes with multiple levels and difficulty options, and the graphics are pants filling. Sure, you can't dodge, or roam free through the environment, but you can't do that in Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja either, which both cost the same price as the standard version of Mutant Bash TV.
Except this isn't in the spirit of Angry Birds -- but you're right, there are no rules at all that dictate the type of game he needs to write. But there's also no rules that say we can't be disappointed in his choice. While I'll agree about the graphics (which is a big part of why I'm so disappointed), the gameplay is absolutely no different than Doom Resurrection (or any other first-person rail shooter). It's the same game in a new skin and storyline. There is zero comparison to Fruit Ninja or Angry Birds. They are completely different games in almost every conceivable way. You can't free-roam in either of those games because not only were the style of games not made for it, it wouldn't even make sense.
huh? I thought this was 99 cents? 1.99 for the iPad version right? Either way - at that price... except I'm not a fan of on rails, or zombies, or lots of blood in games... that pretty much counts me out. I am really interested in the tech behind the game though.
Again, it's not the price I have a problem with -- I gave Doom Resurrection a chance at $10. I regretted it, but I convinced myself could be enjoyable. I was wrong. As this game is really no different, and price has no bearing on gameplay, it's just something I'm not going to enjoy. The tech is interesting, absolutely -- primarily as it could be applied to a real FPS.
The thing is, every iPhone fps that I can think of is designed with linear levels, where you progress along a set path from A to B, with no way to go off that path. I mean can you "free roam" in Modern Combat 2, NOVA, BIA2 etc? No you move from area to area as intended by the level designers. So I've got to ask what's the point of controlling movement if you can only move along a set path anyway?
Fair enough. Perhaps this could be the next step in the evolution of rail shooters? Lol. From what I've read, seen, and heard, MBTv is non-stop action, and some skill is required to get through the more difficult levels. You aren't just watching a movie while casually shooting at stuff. I can understand why you would be disappointed though. I also think about what this game could have been. But when I put those thoughts aside, and look at the game for what it is, I see some fun to be had. But if you hate on-rail shooters as much as I hate over-hyped and over-promoted "retro" games, there's probably no point in debating this. Lol. We like what we like, and hate what we hate. To each his/her own. $1.99 for the iPhone 4 / iPad / iPod touch 4 version. It comes with higher resolution graphics. Lol. I love blood, zombies, and shootin' stuff.
Alot of blood in a shooter is no where near as good as Great player physics for when you throw a grenade at them or something explodes near by. I love seeing people fly.
I was a bit iffy that this game was only on rails, but after watching the preview, I'll be getting it for sure now. And only $2 for HD retina version? Wohooo
I don't know that the pacing alone is enough to set this apart from Doom Resurrection in terms of gameplay, and as far as I can tell it's the only moderately significant difference. I'm prepared to be wrong, but I don't think I am in any way that's important. That's really my issue. This is an engine meant to tear new holes in existing games. It's meant to make the next Fallout 3 or Oblivion or something like it, but instead it's being confined to this tiny little box of a rail shooter. It's kind of hard to see past that and take it for what it is because you're led by the nose along this track while wanting desperately to hop off and nose around on your own. Granted, that's just my personal preference when it comes to first-person games, though I'm certainly not alone. I just feel like if you're going to put that much effort into building a stonking great engine that blows everything else out of the water, you should at least do it the solid of making it into a game worthy of its capabilities. You wouldn't buy a Ferrari Modena just to drive to the supermarket every Sunday. Well, not unless your name is Gates, Branson or Buffet. True enough -- though I'll agree that "retro" gets thrown around way too much on the App Store when really only a very small fraction of it does any justice to proper classic gameplay visuals and style. The rest are just trying blatantly (and usually poorly) to cash in on nostalgia buffs.
Or maybe Team Fortress 2, I love nailing people to walls by their heads or other parts of their body. I once glitched a soldier so that he was sticking straight out of the wall because some of his bones wouldn't bend correctly when I shot him with the huntsman.
