Oh, yes--Commander Keen. Those were the days--when you had to manually configure your hardware to work with each game. Select option --> Soundblaster AWE32, lol...

There was this game called MageSlayer by Raven Soft....man I LOVED that game. I think it was based on one of Id's engines, not sure.

I want to say I could not afford the soundblaster at first and got like an adlib gold or something terrible... FM synthesizer for the win!

Am I the only one who thought Call of Duty Zombies had good controls? :D They felt no different from playing Halo with dual-sticks on an Xbox. I can't stand swiping to turn. It wears my thumb out, especially if you have to turn completely around to tend to something behind you. But since most 3D games use this control, I've learned to tolerate it.

    How dare you make sense!

  5. No, probably not even free. Sorry, but my disappointment combined with the fact that I truly dislike rail shooters makes it pointless to download when I already know I'm going to hate the gameplay. I've already played Doom Resurrection and deleted it after 10 minutes. I don't need a prettier version.

As a showpiece, it's top-notch. As a gaming experience, it's an arcade shooting gallery on a dolly. If you like that, more power to you. For me it's a waste of however many hundreds of megs this is going to occupy and the second time id have turned an otherwise awesome possibility on iOS into a huge letdown.

  6. FM synthesis was awesome! I loved playing Doom, Descent and all the others to that great cheesy synth sound. :D

I LOVE rail shooters (in all it's variations) Although the gunshooting & turretshooter variations might lose a lot of it's appeal on Iphone without an plastic gun or turret/cannon to wield, the big screen and less actual use of lightgun wielding reflexes.

Why I love them? If done right (see: Virtua Cop 3, in arcades only), it offers a very fast paced guided experience (directed by the devs) where the developers guide you through as much tough situations as is possible in 1 stage. But most important thing of course is that it stays an arcade genre, so there's always the need to score points or try to 1cc it. I would love to see the genre go the way of HOTD4 and incorporate more features from the SHMUP/Danmaku genre's.

I find it sad that people can't appreciate them anymore. But seems Im a dying breed, all my favorite type of games nowadays (belt scroll beat'em ups, run & guns) are nowadays labeled as; "repetitive" :(

Standing in an arcade holding a gun is a COMPLETELY different situation,
you cannot compare such a shooter with an on-rails shooter on an iPhone screen. Part of the fun really is the gun in your hand.
Therefore, in an arcade I LOVE these shooters, really the best games there.
On my iPhone, it's simply boring.

It's really not boring though. There is no downtime in the game. There is always something to shoot, which is really conducive to multiple playthroughs as you figure out what order to shoot stuff, what you have time to shoot later, and other things like that. But, if you've already made your mind up about a game you've never played I'm not going to be able to change it.

FM Synth...now THAT'S hardcore! I was on that for a few until I 'inherited' my mom's PC from work. Once you go AWE32, there's no looking back :-D

Awesome. I hope the controls are good (gyro like). If so, it could be the best railshooter ever. (never liked the dual stick controls anyway)
