I might like it as a decent on-rails shooter, although I didn't play Doom Resurrection for very long. And still I would shed a tear imaging what it could have been :)

But ok, let's just wait and see. That's counting for both sides.

  2. As was said, this forum is for discussion, good and bad. It's not Stuart Smalley's mirror. Those of us expressing a negative opinion are disappointed -- sorely so -- that an engine that had heretofore unheard of potential is going to be used for a game whose gameplay is hobbled at the knees and turned into an interactive movie. It's just a troupe of bad voice actors away from being House of the Dead, playability-wise. Just like Doom Resurrection, and at the time that was the cutting edge 3D engine, and it received just as much derision for its hobbled gameplay.

This game is like a mind-bogglingly hot girl who puts a 4-man tent in your pants until she opens her mouth and asks if Paraguay is that thing you put on when you jump out of an airplane; she's five minutes of fun spoiled by the echoes when she smacks the headboard.

And for two bucks and a good time, I wouldn't care if the game were a triple bagger :0)

The reality is that on rails is the best way to do a precision shooter...you can dedicate 100% of input to aiming and shooting, as opposed to the (typically aweful) dual-stick modes of most FPS games on the App Store.

I've yet to find one that controlled really well (not decent, not ok, but really, really well) and if the controls suck, well to paraphrase one of my favorite lines of all time:

"If this little part sucks, then the whole thing sucks. And if the whole thing sucks then we suck. So tell me...do you suck?"
(Oh how I wish I could find the original quote right now)

Agreed. I'm still not getting it, only because I don't like rail shooters, BUT that is a valid point--for a 99c game it's a steal!

It's not "idiotic" it's a gaming choice. Some people like rail shooters, some don't (for the record, I HATE rail shooters). I never liked House of the Dead but my wife, my brother and some of my boys love the series. Why? Because it appeals to the casual fans more--which I think is what ID is after with this game. But to question whether John is "capable" of producing free-roaming game on any platform is ludicrous. I posted this on the front page:

Tell the truth I am starting to get annoyed by some of the comments here but realize I have to take another TA member's advice and realize that a lot of other members here are kids and obviously have little clue who John Carmack is. The man is a gaming-legend and is almost single-handedly responsible for birthing the modern FPS genre as we know it and--along with Epic--has pushed 3D gaming advancements for over a decade. Call of Duty, Halo, even Epic's original Unreal may not have existed if not for games like Doom, Quake et al. Just because I am not planning on buying an on-rails shooter doesn not mean I do not recognize that John could blow us out the water if he chose to. If he doesn't choose to then that's his (or any developer's) prerogative--they don't owe you anything.

It's cool to state why you won't buy a game or to say you're disappointed--but to insult a dev or their abilities just because they don't include a feature you want? That's beyond retarded.

Don't forget Wolfenstein and Commander Keen baby! =P

I remember playing wolfenstein when it firt was released by apogee.. back when computers did not ship with sounds cards...It was unbelievable compared to the competition.. I guess Ultima underworld (R.I.P. Origin) was good back then but very very slow...

Of course id could and I bet it is coming from both Epic and id... they are taking baby steps as they have a lot of people to feed. =)

I understand that some people like rails games, although i can't understand why.

This game just went from a top-3 must get game to i won't even download a free trial app to check it out (if there was one available).

    good luck with the game.

    True.

But there are some very good games that utilize the on screen controls very well. The controls in Call of Duty Zombies work perfectly.

I thought COD:Z controls were horrible, I couldn't even play it.
I thought MC:S and Nova's controls were best.

And I couldn't stand Nova's controls. :D Point being, good control schemes do exist, and some games include the best of the available control schemes. Modern Combat 2 has the Nova-like controls you like, and it also has the dual-stick controls I like (they don't work as well as the COD:Z controls, IMO, but they're still there). There's no reason why a FPS would have to be on rails.

I'm trying to keep an open mind about Mutant Bash TV, but the more I think about it, the less enthusiastic I get. Just the thought of playing a FPS on-rails reminds me too much of those cheesy ass amusement park rides I used to go on as a kid.

On-rail gameplay should be reserved for characters who are literally on-rails, or are on some kind of a track or path. It would feel a lot more natural, I think. Here's an example. In real life, when we're walking, we don't quickly glide from point A to point B after we do something. Meh...

    +1 to this
EDIT: woops, misunderstood. i will try the lite version, maybe ill like it!
there are good games that utilise onscreen controls well, like nova. COD zombies had imo, one of the worst fps controls on an itouch. the swipe mode was basically just an analog stick, but on the screen, which bothered me. i want to turn only as much as i swipe, dammit!

Agreed 100% So glad I played the free version of that game!
Nova and Modern combat have really good controls. Ravensword's aren't too shabby either. ;)

I have to say I'm disappointed, mostly because I enjoy exploring in games, even linear ones, looking at all the locations, seeing if there are any hidden ammo packs, story clues etc. and from what I know, the console version or Rage will be the kind of game I like. But as I am equally as impressed by nice graphics, and at one dollar It will be worth downloading just to look at.

I really can't wrap my head around all the kicking and screaming over this game. You wouldn't even download the game is there was a free version to check out? Really? Mutant Bash TV is a ton of fun, if you want to stage some kind of strange boycott because they designed the game on rails, that's up to you... But in the end, you're really going to be missing out on a great game that is a lot of fun to play.
