Anyone else mildly excited about this news? If I had to name one space-themed game from the 16-bit days that brings the most feelings nostalgia backed by genuine quality of article, then R-Type would have to be it. Now that I am no longer able to play games on screens much larger than that of the iphone/itouch, being able to play a superlative port of R-Type presented in small format - with headphone sound and a choice of control schemes - would bring me full-circle, and produce an odd sort of closure to my fascination with games of this genre. Hell. Yes. R-Type is hands down, the best side scrolling shooter ever. This brings me to tears of joy.
In addition to having a choice of control methods, it would be fun to be able to toggle between the original chiptunes and a rearranged soundtrack produced by modern synths. Or how about stereo-phonic 3-D (w/ glasses) mode? There are endless opportunities for producing what could ultimately be regarded as a definitive version of this game for idevice. Let's just hope they do it right...$5 seems like a good price-point for a stable and throughly play-tested app that would sell countless copies within days of its release.
The music for R-Type was composed by the great composer Chris Hülsbeck. Which game does also have his musik? ... Ahh, our game: ZombieSmash! (Sorry, shameless self-advertisement ) Ok I will add some words fitting to this thread: I think it will be very hard to bring this game 1:1 to the iPhone as it will not be beatable. Its one of the hardest games ever, and that was with a real joystick. And with the suboptimal touch controls.... - zombie
this is really a bad news damn iphone is fighting with psp then look at this! where is steve jobs for respond this responsible?
old rubbish games! wrong graphic quality! look on other hand new metal gear solid is ported to psp then this shit ported to iDevice! we want the same psp games (i know perhaps these games will coming on 2010 for idevice but we are disappointing from apple)
awesome news. together with ghosts'n'goblins and the new sonic on the way, we'll soon be deep in retro heaven. cant wait.
You're right - that self-advertisement is indeed shameless (i.e. in that it elicits additional off-topic replies from others), and the "some words fitting" may turn out to be baseless, given that well-tweaked tilt controls (not only "subpar touch")will be among the choices offered in the 1.0 release. I've beaten a different, unnamed side-scroller with tilt controls, and feel they would carry over well to R-type.
how dare you call r-type shit. you gtfo right now. that said, if you think you're going to be playing games with true psp quality visuals on the iphone at this point in time, you're going to be hurting. simplistic single screen games like twilight golf(no offense it's a great game) cause stuttering from time to time on 2g units. what makes you think you're going to get something like the MGSeacewalker to work without it lagging like crazy? hell even decent looking iphone games like dungeon hunter aren't half as visually stunning as top tier psp games, and they suffer from slowdown as well. the iphone might have the specs to display great visuals, but unfortunately it just doesn't have the performance to back up those visuals seamlessly in gameplay....yet. otherwise we would've gotten an ultimate ghosts n goblins port, and not a second less spectacular remake. though, let me say, the ghosts n goblins on the iphone kicks ass and i recommend it to any old schooler reading this right now. but they had to redo it visually for a reason people. anyways, i'm pretty excited for this. hopefully konami takes the initiative after irem's release of an r-type port, and starts to kick some ass with some iGradius. god i love gradius...
People call it sooooo hard, when I got the 360 version I played through the first few levels on my first credit.
