Can someone explain what the problem is that is breaking Game Center and why it's such a hard thing for Apple to fix?
I doubt we'll ever know. And even if (when) Apple fixes it, I doubt the release notes will explain much
Just for curiosity's sake: could the problem be one specific game that's bugging GameCenter? Maybe it's something we all (everyone experiencing the bug) have installed on our devices. Since my iPad is fine but my iPhone isn't, it might have to have been installed at some point to cause the problem. Also, considering the time-frame, (disregarding the theory that ios9 caused the problem) the game was probably released last Autumn. Most likely, it would have GameCenter support. If we can narrow down the field of games, we might be able to find something that's causing the problem. Again, I'm not saying this is the bug. I'm just curious.
Valid hypothesis but that's not the case. Everybody who now experiences the bug was fine until iOS 9 was released.
I just thought of something random. Keep in mind I majored in education, not comp sci...Would there ever be a way where Apple could give customers an option to downgrade to 8.4.2? You could either accept or decline. Just spitballing...
Never going to happen, not least due to security concerns. Apple stops signing previous versions of iOS at speed these days, and so it's not going to let you install a version of iOS that's over six months old.
For security reasons and even more today it would be a big NO. Furthermore, by looking around on the Internet, I've found people with this bug since iOS 7. Seems like it wasn't that widespread before.
So far so good here though, backing up my device to computer, not playing any games released before November 2013. I hope I can play Groove Coaster 2 which was released July 1 2015. There are version history updates dating back to 2013. But I know 7-1-15 was official release date. Hmmm.
Response from escalated priority Apple Support re Game Center: "the issue is being investigated and should hopefully be resolved soon". Hmm.
Made a tiny bit of progress with this, but on jailbroken devices only. So I've been suffering from Game Center breaking and also the phone freezing if you try to delete game center enabled apps (the ones with "Do you want to remove from game center?" prompts when you delete them from the home screen) from home screen on 9.1. I can temporarily stop the problem by rebooting with airplane mode then logging out of and into GC. I recently jailbroke and despite it all, I still kept getting the problem. So I installed a free tweak called "NoGameCenterAnnoyance". Now, this doesn't make Game Center work sadly, it's still broken. HOWEVER! I can now delete apps off the home screen without freezing. If you're jailbroken you can also use the task manager CocoaTop to kill the "gamed" Game Center process, forcing it to restart and making it work again for a while.
I restarted my device at least a dozen times (with that Airplane Mode trick) to try and get Game Center to work in order to get White Day running. It ended up working and I got to download the game's resources. Even quitting the game and reloading it a bunch of times hasn't killed Game Center again, but yeah...I imagine it'll be gone again sooner than later. Apple. ****ing Apple.
I wish the airplane mode still worked for me, but it gets stuck trying to log out and never seems to work. I know it's kind of a first world issue, but there are some games coming out with social aspects that I would want to play with my GF and can't ...
i got fed up and did the "backup to pc-factory reset-restore from pc" GC works again since. It's been 4 days. Meanwhile, i am careful to install only 2015 and newer games, as i read in this thread old GC games might force it to close again. Let's hope it lasts.
That's BS to have to do that. Shouldn't be limited to what games you can play. Whoever is in charge of keeping things updated to work as they are designed should be fired. When PSN got hacked a couple years ago and was down a month there were some absolutely livid gamers out there, but even then there was communication throughout the mess. Apple hasn't officially said squat about the problem with GC, as though it isn't a problem at all. I don't see this ever getting fixed. Wouldn't surprise me if they just remove GC completely in a future update...
I did this once and the issue reappeared instantly after I restored the backup, so I'm hesitant to do it again as it is a PITA to have to redownload all the apps (the apps don't get backed up)
I did that too. Worked for a week ..now GC won't load again, white screen of death, etc. fuark this is so frustrating
I have been lurking in this thread for a good while and now want to add my experience. Game Center stopped working on my iPhones a few months back. But on my iPad, with same account, it is still working. Which makes it clear it's not account related. Some officials have earlier stated, that the problem was related to game center credentials not being the same as apple-id. If that was the case, I should'nt be able to have a functioning GC on iPad. i really wish there was some sort of pattern shared between those of us that have this white screen freeze. Family ID. Multiple devices. Different login between apple-id and gamecenter. Or a certain game... But above all, I really wish Apple would fix their sh!t. Because GC is needed for a lot of great games to run. And is the only enabler for playing multiplayer in loads of other games.
