Haha... nice... On the up side, it probably has a better framerate than ME3 on the PS3 I never got round to picking ME:I up, kinda glad so now as I'll be sinking time into ME3 tomorrow onwards.
This game owns IMHO. Great gameplay on my iPhone 4. Not sure what the best upgrade path is (bio? Weapons, Defense?) or if the game is balanced so it doesn't matter. So far I've upgraded my main gun twice. Thoughts?
Focus on combat. Upgrade your shotgun to level 2, assault rifle to level 3, and rifle to level 3. Get leash, and upgrade that, because at higher levels it's a fast-regenrating instant-kill, and pull is helpful because it pulls groups.
assault rifle is the best one in my opinion. sniper rifle only becomes good when fully upgraded. for biotics, i'm still testing them out but storm works really well for groups of soldiers that like to stay still or stick behind cover.
I love my shotgun. Then there's Pull and Leash. I use the Assault Rifle only to vary the attacks and improve style. Same with Sniper and the other skills. Oh yeah... I like punching them too then following it up with either a shotgun or an assault rifle. Charging works the same way. I like taking em down up close and personal... Then hiding with stealth, and doing it again. Covering>stealth>jump out of cover>pull>punch>shotgun = style galore Unfortunately, with stealth on cooldown it's kinda difficult to follow up with good style and stay alive especially when done out in the open when there arent much cover to hide into.
Pretty replayable. You can play with different builds, and each battle sequence can be different depending on how you want to approach it. Different strategies will work in this game, so each run can be different.
Don't underestimate the usefulness of sliding when moving around the battlefield: not only can you slide quite a way, but you cover that distance much faster than running, you can change direction while sliding, you'll dodge enemy fire more effectively, and you'll knock down enemies you slide into/through.
So, I've been playing Mass Effect 3 today, and I just thought it's funny how a single log there can make Cerberus look more evil than they do in ME I (as far as I have played, wich was up to the second boss fight, wich just annoyed me). (sorry if this post is abit off topic)
Yeah, I approve of this. Played into the third section and though it does have some annoying problems I'm still enjoying it a whole lot. A really solid third-person action game on a mobile format that's head and shoulders above the competition. Still - I've no objection to doing a game where Shepard doesn't appear, but the storytelling's pretty dumb. Oh noes! A cartoon villain just killed someone I'm supposed to like, and now I'm really angry I guess? I know who Cerberus are, and I get what the game's trying to do, but yeah... you can't just rush things like that and expect it to have any kind of effect. The Paragon/Renegade stuff seems fairly silly, too, more a throwaway nod to the 'proper' games. Plus - on the one hand, when the game works it works really, really well - it's definitely one of the best shooters I've played on a mobile format and it's miles, miles, miles better than Shadowgun with its terrible level design and witless AI. On the other hand, if you've never had any problems with the controls on an iPod/iPhone (can't speak for the iPad and a bigger screen), you're either extremely lucky, you're fooling yourself, or my screen is broken. It's not intuitive where to swipe - sometimes hitting the arrow does a roll, sometimes you need to touch a finger's width above it. Sometimes you'll be able to lock on to a target, sometimes not. Sometimes a biotic will select, sometimes it won't, and on, and on - they're buggy. Not to mention it never stops feeling just a little bit dumb you always start by pointing your gun six inches over the enemy's head... I appreciate the problems with getting any kind of shooter controls to work on a touchscreen but I still end up thinking "If only I could choose exactly when and where to shoot this would be so much easier". That said, I am really, really enjoying it. You can see the corners Iron Monkey have cut - it's not quite 'a console experience', never mind the PR - but it's still way impressive. Even if the levels are basically one room stuffed with chest high walls after another, even if the controls are fiddly and not quite up to the job, battles do play out differently. You can use tactics. Mixing things up is actually fun. Enemies don't seem to have had a frontal lobotomy (bye bye, Shadowgun). For all I've been swearing at the game as I get gunned down for the tenth time because the stupid stick to cover doesn't work the way it ought to I've still started it right back up again. More than worth the five pounds so far. Thumbs up to Iron Monkey - the stuff they've managed to push such under-powered hardware to do is remarkable.
I'll agree with you about most of what you said there. I've played it on both iPad 2 and iPhone 4s, and briefly on someone else's iPod touch. The touch is definitely under powered in comparison to the other two. On an iPad 2, the game itself, I think, is limited by the fact it has to play on an iPod touch as well. I still do like Shadowgun though. But this game is definitely a win for Iron Monkey. I do wish it had a bit more depth and story dut if Iron Monkey do as they did with Dead Space, we can expect some decent upgrades in the future.
I don't hate Shadowgun, but most of the acclaim it got plainly came from the fact it was the only game in town. The levels are terribly designed - invisible walls everywhere, rooms that don't even try to look like anything except a collection of chest-high barriers. The enemy designs are the exact same type of OMG evil space mutants!!11! hackwork we've seen in countless shooters on PC and consoles. The AI is almost non-existent. Technically it's pretty slick, the controls are very good (better than Infiltrator in some respects) and the voice acting is surprisingly impressive, but people just got overwhelmed by amazement this was a third-person shooter on their phone ahmahgawd, and ignored all the faults even when they were eyeballing them dead on. The Tegra 3 video is a good illustration of how ridiculous the fuss over Shadowgun is - look, look! We've poured water all over the levels for absolutely no reason at all! See the incredibly realistic water! Everywhere! And this is reason for endless fawning newsposts about how Madfinger are suddenly at the forefront of mobile gaming? Give me a break. Anyway, rant over - I have been having a few crashes with Infiltrator, but I don't see them as worth complaining too much over. I think it's a minor miracle IronMonkey managed to get the game running at all. And despite the missed opportunity for any kind of real story element (even something like Epoch. would have been good) the basic gameplay is sound enough despite its flaws to keep me coming back.
I do get your point. But Shadowgun isn't the first 3rd person shooter, it is, or was, the most visually impressive and still looks very good. Plus the controls really are spot on, except no ironsight. Some of the things lacking in Shadowgun are present in infiltrator, so between the two, I think their offspring would be amazing. I personally thought Rainbow Six was previously the best third person shooter, (excluding Dead Space of course) if you enjoyed infiltrator, I think you'll enjoy that as well. I know, a bit off topic but still. Infiltrator is still one of the most enjoyable games in recent times, I'm playing ng+ at the moment and I thought the replay would be boring, but it's still as much fun.
off topic, but THANK YOU!! SOMEONE ELSE WHO LOVES RAINBOW SIX!!! sorry anyway, It's crashed a couple times on me, but hasn't really stopped me from enjoying it. The frequent save points help with that. Unlike Shadowgun when it first came out..... But one problem is that it doesnt always save before a cutscene. Had to replay a couple portions because of that. But a minor complaint imo.
if you're referring to rainbow six on ipod, i'm pretty sure that's a 1st person shooter. the only time you even see your character is when you hide him behind cover. otherwise it's all looking at your gun. i generally wouldn't put that in the same genre as ME:I or DS which are really 3rd person.
Haven't played MEI since beating the tutorial level the day it came out. Just played an hour since I was motivated to get through it after spending a few hours with ME3 today. When I checked what chapter I was on, I was a bit surprised. I had already finished nearly all of chapter 6. Looks like it's going to be a pretty short game (under two hours). I'm having quite a bit of fun with it though. I really think they nailed the controls. Not being able to move while you shoot is a little strange. I don't know if it's a game that I'd want to replay though like Dead Space was.
