Methinks about 50% of the complaints here are from people not understanding how the game actually works. When your guns are in cool-down you can't target anyone. So "precise movements" are not needed, just an active weapon.
There's absolutely a learning curve with the controls, given that the game is a bit more involved than, say, Shadowgun or most iOS first-person shooters. However, with a bit of time and a couple of upgrades, most people should be finding it quite easy to become a whirling dervish of death, chaining and combining attacks with ease and only the occasional control hiccup. The outset of the game can feel slow, clunky and unusual, but by the time you're halfway through, you should be entering combat, sprinting down a hallway, sliding into cover, hoisting multiple enemies into the air simultaneously and chaining them all down with the assault rifle in slow-motion, sniping a sniper, switching cover, leashing and throwing another enemy off a catwalk, driving yet another out of cover with the storm ability, cloaking, vaulting over cover, punching that last bad guy to the floor and shotgunning him while he's down, all without breaking a sweat for a well-deserved 3-star reward.
I agree. I hate to pull out the "you're not playing it right" card, because I know how dangerous that can be. That being said, they may not be playing it right . To get the most out of the game, I find that it is MUCH more of a strategy/cover game than a traditional TPS. There are enough people complaining about the controls that it does seem that some tweaking could help, but generally speaking, I'm enjoying this quite a bit. I think this is getting a bit of an unfair rap by some, for various reasons, but to each his/her own I guess.
Yeah I agree.. the controls could using tweaking because it's not completely smooth and seamless as I'd want it but once you hit half way on the game you should be fairly well adjusted. It becomes fun and face-paced once you "understand" how the game works. Biotics also throw in a great mix into the shooter genre.
Enjoying what little I have played of it so far, I enjoyed shadowgun and dead space as well. It's a nice little game for 6 dollars. That being said if dev's are gonna charge 6 dollars and up they better start stepping up their game, because I can get some hell of a nice games on steam for that price.
This game is a lot more different than Shadowgun and DS, but i love it just the same. Unfortunately, there are some who really dont understand how to play effectively yet, and start saying the controls are clunky or the game is rubbish. This is actually one of the most unique experiences ive played because of the variety it delivers in different aspects of the game. What I like best is the scoring system which has a similarity with Devil May Cry in which you need to vary your moves to increase your score much.
Indeed, people are complaining about the controls, and yet, I was able to get them to work for me within minutes. I guess these guys don't get how to play it. As mentioned before, if you think you should be able to shoot them from the outset, you are doing it wrong, wrong, wrong . And that scoring system is a pain in my ass. I've gotten the Veteran rank twice, and I'm almost done with the game. It's too strict. Two three star values should be enough, not being scratched, getting 15 style points, and finishing everyone in under 3 minutes! That's just a little out of reach!
Hmm that's weird. I just beat the 1st boss and I've gotten 90% veterans. Though I retried some quite a few times to get it right. But i guess for you, it'll make you want to keep playing to get veteran
Im with the "Your-not-playing-right-guys" I figured the controls right away! No probs there, exept my lousy aim when trying to charge into enemies! I think this game has been done perfectly! I just can't believe I got mass effect in 3D on iPhone....and iPad offcouse ....it's even true to the feel! I get the same feeling inside playing the then when playing the Xbox version, I just hopewe get to meet Randall in the console game! That would be so cool!
I absolutely love this game . No problem with the controls at all , in fact I like the iOS type of controls that this game has instead of mimicking consoles . The game is a breeze , not difficult at all . I have to say though that like dead space , the game seems more suited to the big screen of the iPad rather than the small iPod touch/iPhone screen . The graphics are "OMG amazing" , this is by far the best looking iOS "real" (which means excluding the IB games ) game . It looks close to mass effect 1 , IMO , awesome stuff . The textures, the environmental effects .... The sound is great too, in the vein of console ME games with synth music and punchy sound effects . Iron monkey have become my favorite iOS developer , hell I reinstalled dead space on my ipad2 so as to play both their games . They are in a league of their own in providing console type games that are great companions o the main games of these franchises . I can't wait for their next game .
I have to agree with this post. I don't quite understand where all the haters are coming from. The controls and framerate need a bit of tweaking but I have every faith that iron monkey will update it. I think if you took "mass effect" out of the title, this game would have gotten the praise it deserved.
In general, and in many ways, I must say that I agree with the "lern2control" crowd However, there is one glaring exception, one that I cannot fathom could be the result of me not grasping the controls, and one that seriously degrades the experience: sometimes, enemies just cannot be targeted. The targeting box just will not appear, and as we all know, now that we're used to this newfangled targeting method , without box, enemies cannot be interacted with (with the possible exception of some skills, mayhap. Charge?). I've had several encounters where just one enemy remains, and the rascal has the audacity to walk straight up to me, circling around and firing, but I just cannot, no matter how I twist my fingers and mind, make the targeting box appear. I've tried running to the far end of the room, halfway there, and many variations in between, switching weapons, closing in to melee range, using biotics and abilities, but much of the time the durned bugger/toaster (dual sci-fi reference!) just remains untouchable. Sometimes, this can be broken by invoking a biotic powers, but sometimes, nothing but dying and reloading will do the trick. It really, REALLY makes the whole experience far less pleasant. Since the control method is novel and actually kinda innovative, in a small way, mastering the controls is a bit part of the challenge of the game (unlike most normal fps games for iOS, where the controls feel intuitive after a few minutes, ir properly implemented). However, when this sensation of control and the satisfaction of finally feeling in charge of your wayward interplanetary cyber-sexed-up xenophobe is regularly and irregularly broken by the inability to do just about anything thanks to a major bug, it takes away from the novelty and fun factor of the control scheme...
Exactly, this is a damn fine shooter on iOS, with great graphics and some more portable friendly mechanics (checkpoints), I think that the Mass Effect name has damaged it as people were expecting a story focused RPG with shooter elements up to the standard of the console games, not going to happen on iOS. If this was simply "Infiltrator" rather than mass effect infiltrator, people would be fine with it. And at least theres no crash issues like IB2 or shadowgun had at launch, meaning very few 1 star reviews on app store
Anyone having awful framerate troubles with this? I've only been able to reach the second section because at several points it just slows to less than 1fps, and eventually just crashes completely. I'm on a 3rd Gen iTouch, running Jailbroken iOS 5.0.1.
Guess I spoke too soon. if u r JB use sbsettings to find out how much ram u have free before starting. on my 3gs i needed at least 130M for games like shadowgun, IB2 and epoch to even load, and getting that much free required closing everything and clicking free ram lots
I'm not going to knock this game because I haven't played it yet but I would think that most people would prefer IB2 over this game. I have IB2 and it's brilliant, it may have had crash issues, probably due to iOS 5. I really wouldn't take the app store reviews at par. A lot of the time, those reviews are very deceiving. Beta testers are always giving rave reviews even when the game isn't very good. I also believe the game companies always choose the reviews they put up.
I've been playing MGS:Snake Eater on 3DS and if you want to know what bad controls are like, play that game for 20 minutes. I have to say switching over to ME:I has been like going on vacation and not wanting to come back when it comes to controls. They just work, period. I think you'll find ME:I's controls to be more suited for how it's intended to be played with its style multiplier. This is unlike Shadowgun's controls which cater to it's method of gameplay which can and does get monotonous at times, and thats what I think ME:I tries to veer from.
for anyone playing this on a 3rd generation itouch how does it play? lag problems? etc.the usual questions (thanks)
you really can't make a comparison to IB2, its a third person shooter, not a one-on-one fighting game. It's a totally different animal and must be evaluated as such. The one comparison you might make is in graphics, and for me ME:I has the advantage not because they're more impressive, but because it has similar graphics AND a solid frame rate. That said, the game's controls need tweaking, especially in responsiveness of targeting. targeting a moving enemy is nearly impossible, making it very difficult to deal with flanking.
