Off the top of my head.. Suidoken 2 Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy IX Grandia Breath of Fire IV Chrono Cross Wild Arms Vagrant Story
Already got ff7 and ff9 with the playstation. Chrono cross is in the mail, and I've been wondering about grandia, wild arms and vagrant story. What do you think?
Lots of great RPGs for the PlayStation, it was kind of a golden age. In addition to the ones already mentioned, check out the whole FF series, Legend of Legaia, Threads of Fate, Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears... lots of classics.
Being in the UK and ignorant of imports at the time, I can only comment on PAL releases. Luckily that mostly rules out the more expensive titles so here's a collection of all the games I loved and still feel relevant - hopefully you find something in there. Here goes: Alundra Ape Escape Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain Breath of Fire III Bushido Blade Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Die Hard Trilogy Discworld I Discworld II Driver Final Fantasy VIII Front Mission 3 Future Cop: LAPD Grandia The Granstream Saga Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile Kula World Kurushi Magic Carpet MediEvil Metal Gear Solid Monkey Hero Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus Pandemonium PaRappa the Rapper Parasite Eve Poy Poy Resident Evil: Director's Cut Resident Evil 2 Star Ocean: The Second Story Suikoden Suikoden II Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo Syndicate Wars Theme Hospital Theme Park Tombi Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Twisted Metal 2: World Tour Vagrant Story Vandal Hearts Vandal Hearts II Vib-Ribbon Wild 9 Wild Arms WipEout 2097 But yeah, if you're in the US/able to import then there are some great RPGs/Shmups others can recommend to you.
My most played PSX game was Xcom Ufo Defense I sunk hundreds of hours into it, I can't really recommend it without the PSX mouse though it really needs it in my opinion. Basically it was the original PC Xcom with better graphics it's in my opinion the best version that was made full stop.
Spyro (I'd skip straight to year of the dragon if you don't feel like playing them all) Silent Hill Legend of Dragoon As a whole, the playstation hasn't aged too well. The rpg's and platformers are still solid, but fighting games, sports, and most 3d platformers show its age.
Ok, so legend of dragoon was bagged on because of its shallow gameplay, but in my opinion, xenogears also has shallow gameplay and it reviews are stunning. What should I do?
Dragoon is your basic RPG gameplay, not a lot of complexity. Not much worse than the FF series though, so if you enjoyed them, don't let that scare you off. If you want more complex gameplay, Legend of Legaia offers a really unique and clever combo-based system that plays like a turn based fighting game. And as mentioned, Final Fantasy Tactics is in a league of its own, with excellent strategy mechanics
Soul Blade was amazing at the time. It was my first fighting game that used weapons, and man was it a blast! I also played Tekken 2 + 3, MK Trilogy, and KOF. And regarding my earlier post, I don't mean these games were bad. It's just that after playing recent fighting games, these are just so clunky. The 2d sprite ones aren't as bad, but still.
