[rant:mad:] I'll keep saying it until the cows come home. The lurkers here are brutal. Truly, while it takes a bit more effort on the developers part they should always do a "First 10 to Post get's a promo code sent to their PM." You really ensure a better review rate and encourage people to sign up for accounts. This just supports the behavior that makes people disappointed and angry.[/end rant:mad:]

I agree too, but people who posts codes will never understand
that most if not all lurkers will never rate their app so they end
up giving them a copy of their app/game for free and get nothing
in return. Toucharcade needs to make a rule that states instead
of posting codes in threads the developers asks posters to pm
them for a code so that lurkers don't steal codes and not rate
their apps/games and it also gives legit users a chance to get
one and be able to rate the app/game.

    > most if not all lurkers will never rate their app

    And you know this how?

    > so that lurkers don't steal codes and not rate their apps/games and it also gives legit
    > users a chance to get one and be able to rate the app/game

And legit users are more likely to rate apps, why?

I believe that most lurkers are less likely to rate their app because there is no accountability. They just swoop in and take a code for free. If they like it, they'll keep it, if not, they delete it. No big deal as there will be more codes given away for free that they can scoop up anytime.

Legit/registered users are more likely to rate an app because they want to help the developer and encourage them to continue to give out more codes. Registered users support this community and want to continue to see it grow and be a source of information and promotions. If it's a good app, a registered user may start a post about it in another forum and start a new discussion about it, encouraging other people to buy it. A lurker cannot post a discussion.

Think of it like this. If you're a developer and give out 100 codes and get a small number of reviews or none even, why would you come back and continue to give out codes?

In case it isn't apparent, I am playing Devil's Advocate here.

And how are registered users held accountable?

Doesn't this apply to unregistered users, as well?

This deals with a degree of prescience that the human mind has not yet evolved.

    In what way?

This applies to unregistered users, as well.

This one seems like a stretch since a lurker could register to start said discussion. For that matter, who is to say that lurkers aren't merely registered users who aren't logged in or who log in only to post?

I don't presume that the only reason developer's give out codes are to get reviews, though I agree with the thinking behind your question. The problem is that it isn't established that registered users are more likely than "lurkers" to review apps.

If I may be so bold, and if I haven't been pompous enough, it seems that what is really being said isn't "Lurkers shouldn't get codes", but rather "I am much more likely to get codes if Lurkers can't get them". If Lurkers can't get them, they won't dry up and blow away, they will become registered in order to get promo codes. This will in no way make it easier for you to get codes if you are slower than your former-Lurkers than it would when they were actual Lurkers.

So, while I understand your frustration, and "Lurkers" seem to be the easy target for such, the real problem is that not everyone can get every code they want. And those who can't afford to monitor this forum every 30 seconds or so 24/7 will miss out on a number of them, Lurkers or not.

Greg, you have very good points and counterpoints. I just know that I hate seeing a list of 15 promo codes with two responses. One post saying "Thanks, took KXXX- code" The other saying ":( all gone" Just see this thread for the example! It's totally chance to get one I realize, but how about giving everyone a greater chance than punching in 5 codes only to find out they're all taken. It's a bit more regulated this way and not so Wild West.

Also, this whole thread has absolutely nothing to do with the app they gave the code out for excluding the first post. I find that a bit ironic. :D
