Hmm well I don't think that they would release just one screenshot, that's all. If they were to hand out screens, they would at least give two or three.
It's real, we had to restrict ourselves to just one for various reasons ... check out Axel's blog to keep up to date (http://uk.games.konami-europe.com/blog.do) or "like" Pro Evolution soccer on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/PES ). What I can already tell you is that the game play is going to blow you away...
I hope so. All Konami games for the iPhone so far have been quite awful, eg. Metal Gear Solid (metal duck hunt), Silent Hill (silent pacman), etc. Look at Taito's Space Invaders Infinity Gene or Capcom's Street Fighter IV for inspiration how to port games properly.
I admit that we haven't done the best job on many games that we could or should have done on our games so far (even though I personally like and understand the approach the Kojima team took with MGS) For PES we have taken a somewhat different approach as we all know what it means to bring the PES brand to this platform. The team that worked on PES iPhone is one of the best in mobile sports game production on this planet. Up to 20 people worked on this for more than a year. The game will not be a simple port, but a bespoke, platform adequate new development. Check the blog over over the next weeks.
I, too, like the approach, but it still feels like a half-hearted effort. They could've fleshed it out with other game modes like survival or include cutscenes to make it feel like a complete game. Instead they put the bare minimum and it feels more like a minigame as a result.
1 jam Sounds good! I hope you guys spend a lot of time crafting and tweaking the controls because as you might've realised, it's a make or break for the more traditional games (as opposed to games like Labyrinth or Scoops). Look at Street Fighter IV, Capcom spent a few months just on the controls alone. They really nailed it with the default one, but they even let people customise it with different presets, opacity or even custom position. This is what I'd love to see with PES. Sorry to keep mentioning SF4, I just think it's a good example since it's also a well-known franchise from a big developer which is done extremely well for the iPhone, unlike SEGA with all their mediocre Genesis games. And you can see from the reviews how much people love it. It has 4.5 stars in the US and Australia (probably many other countries too). I even don't mind keep paying more for all the upcoming character DLCs. So as a loyal fan of the series from Winning Eleven 3, I really hope you guys can deliver the best football game for iPhone.
Please don't set the standard to mobile gaming level (against Palm, HTC or Nokia games). iPhone games should be at least on portable gaming level (against PSP and DS). I mean, look at the games library now: Need For Speed, GTA, Street Fighter, Prince of Persia, Chaos Rings, Splinter Cell, Tony Hawks Pro Skater, Skate It, FIFA 10, Tekken (soon). It's a serious gaming platform which even Nintendo CEO considers a threat. Expect negative reviews if it's only slightly better than that mobile version of pseudo-3D PES. It must at least be as good as the PSP version or.. well, you risk extending your reputation for not taking the iPhone platform seriously.
You have seen that screenshot you find in this threat, haven't you? Does that look like a "slightly better than that mobile version of peseudo-3D PES"?
I would be very happy, if they just port PES 5 or 6 to the iPhone. Maybe with updated teams, but the graphics and physics shouldn't be the problem. I'm waiting...maybe this version will be better than the old ones...and still hoping for online multiplayer.
nothings better then X2 Football even 2009 is still the best iPhone football game and its going up against EA and Gameloft and its over a year older then their versions.. X2 Football is the game to beat and i doubt any dev team can beat them but we will see what Konami can come up with
