THANKS FOR LETTING US KNOW! Valve is gold. Pure gold, and they support the Mac!!! Anyways, I played this at a friends house all the way through in a speed session (approx. 1 1/2 hours), and bought the sequel shortly after. I will enjoy to play the first game for enjoyment, so I can marvel at the humor and work put into this game at my own pace.
Glad to see a lot Of people are picking it up. Portal is amazing and I'm working my way through the second one. The humor is top notch. Any question about Steam please feel free to ask me. I love steam as much as I do the app store. I'd love to get some peoples Steam names so I could have some people from TA on my friends list. PMme for my steam name. Hope to see you guys out there!
Portal was one of the best games I've played on the Mac. And it was free for me too since Valve made it free when Steam first launched on the Mac.
Holy crap. Portal is freaking brilliant. Just got through the first 15 levels straight. Took some brainpower in the last few. This is going to be a long game since there's 11 chapters?! Will there be any kind of story that comes up later? Nothing really going on right now besides the system continuosly telling me I'm a good lab rat.
I'm usually not too hot about Valve's games, but this one is exceptionally good. One of the shining examples of contemporary gaming done right. You could study this game in all its details and learn a lot about game design.
Dwnloading steam right now. Can't believe they would make it free. I bought portal 2 the other day on my xbox.
Yes - you will most certainly encounter story. The storyline is not particularly deep though. Some people come away at the end with a "meh" feeling, but most people finish and just bask in wonder for a while in the game they just experienced. Also, once finished, I believe the extra puzzles are available, although I'm not sure as I have the originals on disk and so it might be different than the d/l version.
Wait im at the 18th test chamber. Are their any more levels after that? Besides the 19th test chamber.
My announcement made the front page!! A first for me... Of course, did I get any credit... no, maybe they saw it somewhere else... it was widely advertised after all....
Oh, what the heck, lol. I thought I was still on Chapter 1 of 11 at Stage 15 since it doesn't actually tell you when a new chapter starts. After looking again just now, I'm already on chapter 7 after only 55 minutes? This is going to be a really short game. Apparently I'm already more than half way through with the game in under an hour and still don't see any trace of a story. In any case, it's still a fun puzzle game. Edit: Nevermind, the time Steam shows is actually wrong. My load time in game actually says one one hour and forty minutes. Either way, it's still pretty short, and I'm not seeing any kind of storyline going on. Edit: Omg, so this is where 'The cake is a lie.' is from. Edit: I hate level 18. Edit: Bleh, decided to use a walkthrough video, and it turns out I was trying to do right thing but just sucked too badly at it, lol. That was a painful level though. About to play level 19, which I'm guessing is the end. Playing with my girlfriend who's playing on her computer a few hundred miles away, hehe. We're getting through them together. It's 4 am now. Can't wait to finish the game though. Edit: Holy crap, it's late. At the second stage of the boss fight now. Level 19 was way too long, but I'm pretty sure this is the end. Going to finish up tomorrow, but yeah, it's past 6:30 am. Console games = no sleep. It's a freaking amazing game though.
@backtothis - Just so you know - Portal was a "mini" game thrown on to the disc of Half-life. It was supposed to be a nice little extra and a diversion to help sell the disc. Valve had no idea that it would become, in some ways, more popular than the game it was selling with. It helps put things in perspective when one is concerned about the length of it, and also, for any flaws that it has. For a freebie, and a mini game, one can't ask too much more. Now that they are selling it as a standalone, those issues become more legitimate, but that is not where the game started. It is also why Portal 2 is a full blown "game". Although people still think it is too short too.
I don't think it's too short anymore, lol. Just beat the game in a little under 7 hours. The boss was a little too easy, but that's alright. I seriously don't remember that last time I played a game straight through. Awesome experience. The ending was pretty "meh," and I'm still not sure what the storyline is, lol. Going to look that up I think. Might play the advanced levels/challenges some other time. Definitely will get Portal 2 in the near future though. Loved the song in the credits, heheh. Edit: Just read up the plot on Wikipedia. Looks like I didn't really miss anything after all, lol. Not the most intriguing storyline, but it didn't need to be for Portal to be a masterpiece. My favorite part of the game was using Portals to increase the velocity of your fall. It was awesome you could keep getting faster and faster by making additional portals right before you land. Exhilarating is a good word to describe the experience of the game.
