I would strongly recommend upgrading your totem figures as soon as you can, over the attack and health upgrades. The reason for this is that once you max our your level, you can't really keep any totem cards until you upgrade. You don't want to waste the cards, whereas the attack and health upgrades are really easy. By the same token, when upgrading your totems, focus on increased attack, stun, critical and maybe health regeneration. I find the latter more useful than the health. Additional bullets can be helpful, but only sometimes. The bonus to crystals and herbs doesn't help that much later by midway through the second stage. I updated each once, and that is enough. Collecting crystals and herbs becomes quite easy, and the timers to be able to use them becomes quite long anyway.

Does anyone know how defense cards are used? I have defense cards and “thugs” equipped but I never see them in battle?
My main issue with this game is that you can’t hold cards on the side so it is basically impossible as far as I can tell to make a royal flush or other high-value hand without pure luck. Because even if you have 4 of the 5 you need, you’d have to discard one to trade
Sorry for the very late reply, the defense cards are used when other player attacks you. You can only see your the defense cards in the deck menu because you can't see how other players play,
