    Independence Day MOFOs

    With Canada Day and the Grand Blimp Chase barely over, the crew moved their fleets to the other side of the border. The stakes were high, for NimbleBit spoiled us with two whole plane events in a row: there were Sea Knights to be had. The SK is a popular plane because of its high capacity as a Class 1 plane, and because of its helicopter sounds. (Probably due to the fact that it's a helicopter.)

    Add to that the fact that Philly's a Class 2 airport in the US, home base to many, plus it's surrounded by a bunch of Class 3s and decent size Class 2s, and we have the Perfect Storm.

    And a Perfect Storm it was. Jmac scored his first Superhero result and delivered a deeply respectable 12,403 jobs in the process. Congrats to the Macster!

    The Mac was followed suit by a newbie in our midst. Jethrob80 breezed into town with a 10,393 jobs Superhero result and a well deserved second place on the podium. Welcome, Jethro, glad to have you among us and congrats to you as well!

    Ktc completed the podium, more than 3,000 jobs behind Jethro but still scoring a nice third. Congrats to our favourite TLA! (Three Letter Abbreviation - ed.)

    Nalazoo claimed fourth in the heavily contested field with 6,464 jobs, closely followed by our Breezy Brainiac with 6,299 and the reawakened Polar Bird with 6,182.

    Stogey Jerry took 7th, about 400 jobs behind the Penguin, and Faye the Flinger took an unexpected 8th a little ways behind Cigar Man, the result of a last minute dash that took many by surprise.

    Yitzc77 (welcome back, Yitz!) took 9th with 4,842 jobs, and Clint981, another newbie, brought up the rear, setting the Top Ten entry bar at 4,770. Welcome to you too, Clint, and we hope to see more of you!

    Having said all that, we arrive at the latest edition of the SY8 standings, with two more races to go:

    1st: Mindtornado, 126 points (1st, 116);
    2nd: Faye, 95 (2nd, 91);
    3rd: Nalazoo, 94 (3rd, 82);
    4th: Stogey Jerry, 63 incl. one 1st (5th, 49)
    5th: 4ndrew_g, 63 incl. two 2nds (4th, 63);
    6th: Ktc, 48 (7th, 33);
    7th: Ump, 47 (6th, 47);
    8th: Gus, 29 (8th, 29);
    9th: Thisisina, 27 (9th, 27);
    10th: Jmac, 25 (-, 0).

    'Tornado stays firmly in the top spot, with a 25 points lead over Faye. Chances are he'll be able to claim the Yoke after Auckland already, depending only on his, the Famous Flinger's, and 'Zoo's results. The rest is too far away.

    'Zoo takes third and is now breathing down Faye's neck, only one point down. Chances are, it'll be down to the wire for 2nd and 3rd in this Cup!

    Behind the two Pocket Planes Divas, Stogey Jerry and Andrew G are in a similar fight, neck and neck in 4th and 5th. And Ktc and Ump in turn are also only one point apart, which means the fight for 6th and 7th is still on as well!

    Last but not least, don't count out Gus. The Swarmster is still capable of lashing out. But for now he's in 8th, closely followed by Ina, and by Jmac who's bursting onto the SY8 scene thanks to his Philly win.

    Victim of all of this is Icon, who's been bowled out of the Top Ten not only by Jmac but also by Newbie Jethro, now in 11th with 18. Icon still nurses his hard earned 14 points, which means he's still in the race for a Top Ten spot. A further plus for you, Icon: you're still ahead of Nokitano and the Penguin, who're two points behind you in 13th and 14th.

    A respectable 24 people have now scored points in SY8.

    And now for the 3rd Golden Sequoia:

    1st: Mindtornado, 219 (1st, 209);
    2nd: Faye, 182 (2nd, 178);
    3rd: Nalazoo, 178 (3rd, 166);
    4th: Popehatz, 150 (4th, 150);
    5th: Jmac, 130 (5th, 105);
    6th: Ktc24, 113 (6th, 98);
    7th: Penguin, 85 (7th, 77);
    8th: Stogey Jerry, 68 (10th, 62);
    9th: XGarriga, 64 (8th, 64);
    10th: Andrew G, 63 (9th, 63).

    First 7 places stay in sequence. The Brainy Breezer is still diligently positioning himself for a win, now 10 races away. Faye is now 37 points behind him, which is not unbridgeable, but not easy too bridge either, if the 'Tornado stays on the ball.

    Faye has to look behind her as well, where 'Zoo follows in her footsteps, only 4 points behind.

    We haven't heard anything from Popehatz despite two whole plane events in a row. If a couple of dozen Blimps plus a couple of dozen Sea Knights can't bring him out of papal hibernation, what can? Jmac and Ktc are steadily improving their scores and are now a handful of races from overtaking.

    Penguin improves his score in 7th, which is a good thing for him as Jerry is coming up behind him. Cigar Man just won another two places, overtaking both Lorena aka XGarriga and Andrew G, bringing up the rear in 9th and 10th with 64 and 63 points respectively.

    Below the Top Ten it's another 15 points before we see Ump in 11th, Nokitano in 12th, Ina in 13th, Gus in 14th, and l'Homme Invisible in 15th. (That's French for Where are you, Vic?)

    We now have 37 points scorers in GS3.

    Finally, the Concorde League of Extraordinary Ladies and Gentlemen:

    1st: Faye Valentine, 645 (1st, 641);
    2nd: Gus, 555 1/3 (2nd, 555 1/3);
    3rd: Nalazoo, 432 1/3 (3rd, 420 1/3);
    4th: Penguin, 372 1/3 (5th, 364 1/3);
    5th: North, 366 (4th, 366);
    6th: Number1Ump, 335 (6th, 335);
    7th: Ktc24, 299 (8th, 287);
    8th: Nokitano, 287 (7th, 287);
    9th: Vic, 267 (9th, 267);
    10th: Snowbird, 240 (10th, 240).

    Well, what can we say? Faye's still steadily building her lead, preparing for the onslaught if ever the 'Tornado blasts into the Top Three. (Which he's undoubtedly planning in secret.)

    In 4th, Penguin finally jumps North and in 7th, Ktc does the same to Nokitano. Especially the latter has been a long time coming, with Ktc in the role of slow motion hunter and Nokitano in the role of sitting duck. Congrats, Ktc, you're one step closer to immortality!

    Vic the Invisible and Snowbird, who's also melted away, are holding on to their 9th and 10th places. For how long? The 'Tornado is now 21 points behind the 'Bird in 11th, and if she doesn't watch out she's about to go down in a whirl of snowy feathers. And no doubt, the Sheriff Emeritus will be next.

    And I'm not even mentioning Jmac, who's now tasting blood and sits in 12th, 25 points i.e. one more victory behind the 'Bird.

    'Tornado and the 'Mac are two prime candidates for the Immortal Top Ten, platinum version. Worth mentioning are further the Papal Hatter in 14h, with 175 points; Tater in 15th with 170; and Lorena aka XGarriga in 16th with 137.

    With the two new entrants we now have 79 points scorers in total. Will we make the century? Stay tuned and see y'all in Auckland, at the other end of the world!

    Cheers,
    M.

    Slow burn. But they stay flingin' anyway, because they're hell bent on seeing what's going on in the Top Ten. One sometimes thinks Faye's main motivation is being able to get the Top Ten screenshot at the end of an event.

    Which is deeply, deeply appreciated, Faye! :D

    Cheers,
    M.

    That plus it's a cargo only event. :eek:

    Attached a current top ten screenshot, guess who's not so invisible any more for this event? :D Oh and, who's in the top spot? Sent GC requests to jethrob80 and 4ndrew_g, hope I got your GC names right.

    Sumplify, skip the class 2 planes! ;)
    I send a few Kringle Kruisers and Mapples from Jakarta to Auckland via Cairns.
    About 1h round trip with speed upgrades.

    Speaking of the not-so-invisible anymore Vic...;)

    I'm kind of doing a mix of both techniques, it's kind of all over the place. Didn't think of doing speed upgrades. Too bad I only have 2 KKs.

    Same here! I'm using a bunch of range upgraded KKs operating out of Jakarta/Manila/Guangzhou. In addition, I grab the occasional Auckland job that pops up elsewhere and see if I can fill the odd SK or Mapple with it, then send it onwards.

    My Blimps are only for bux jobs.

    Cheers,
    M.

    I'm not really back

    What's up crew? I haven't played Pocket Planes in months. I've heard the rumblings about Nimblebit released Pocket Trains next and I stopped by the message board for an additional information. I thought I'd fling some planes for old time sake. I forgot what a labor intensive operation it take to stay in the top ten. I just don't have the time anymore. Great to see everyone is still having fun and keeping our baby TA1 humming.

    Cheers

    I'm just wondering if there is a touch arcade flight crew on android. I've put toucharcade in but I'm not getting any leaderboards for it. Have only been playing for a few days so am still quite new to the game.

    Hmmm...didn't think of that. I have 3 cloudliners delivering job to Jakarta from Bangalore, Bangkok and Manila. Then a bunch of Aeros shuttling them to Sydney for final delivery via Roos to Auckland.

    OK. I'm a little worried. I cannot get my iPhone to turn on and I've never backed it up.

    Never mind. Google is my friend; it found a website that taught me how to reset the phone. Now I'm off to learn how to back it up...

    Hey mate,
    long time no see :)
    TA1 has almost always been #2 crew since its inception (last october was it already?), sometimes #3 and even once #1!
    We've seen a healthy turn over of players, old time regulars coming and going, newbies coming and staying, Android players, burn outs, Kingpins, swarm guys, casual flingers always in the top10...
    My guess would be more than 200 players from around the world have flung under TA1 wings. Maybe Merlion can pull a number from his/her oversized spreadsheet? :D

    MOFO Stats after 68 races

    That's a very good idea, Vic! Here goes:

    184 people have entered their names in the SUCK. Slightly less than half of those have actually scored points: 79, or 43%. Both numbers are still increasing.

    So far we have finished 68 events in the MOFO rankings. Nobody scored in all of them. Between the 79 points scorers the average participation rate is 8.6 events, or 12.6%. But there are sharp differences. Here's the Top Ten:

    1. Faye, 58 (!) events (85%);
    2. Nalazoo, 41 (60%);
    3. Gus, 39 (57%);
    4. Ktc, 37 (54%);
    5. Penguin, 32 (47%);
    6. SlightlyNorth, 30 (44%);
    7. Number1Ump, 29 (43%);
    8. Vic, 28 (41%);
    9. Nokitano, 22 (32%);
    10. Jmac and CastlePage, 20 (29%).

    Faye's the absolute Champion here, lonely at the top with 58 scores. 'Zoo, Gus and Ktc follow in a group that clusters around 40 scores; North, Ump and Vic sit around the 30 mark; and Nokitano, Jmac and Castle are grouped around 20, together with Snowbird (19) and Tater (18).

    At the bottom end it's interesting to see no fewer than 25 people who scored in exactly one event. Apparently many are happy to pocket a points score, get themselves into the MOFOs for once, and call it a day. Not surprising, since competing for the top has become quite gruelling these days :)

    And once more it's clear, with Faye and 'Zoo nestled firmly at the top: girlz are more constant scorers than boyz...

    Scoring in many events is one way to rack up the high scores; getting a high score per event is another. Let's see the Top Ten on that (between brackets the number of events the score was averaged on):

    1. Popehatz, 25 points per event (over 7 races);
    2. Harmoniamundi, 25 (over 3);
    3. SpudWreck, 25 (1);
    4. Tiggs2000, 20 (2);
    5. Mindtornado, 19.9 (11);
    6. JethroB80, 18 (1);
    7. LTBaxter, 16.5 (2);
    8. 4ndrew_G, 15.75 (4);
    9. Danoman, 15 (1);
    10. Coastcat, 14.6 (8).

    Three people have a perfect score, with Popehatz as the absolute Champ in this respect: 25 points in each of 7 races. It's also clear from this little list that high average scores go together with participating in not too many events.

    Just for comparison, take a look at the eleven people with the highest participation rates. They sit a bit lower on the average scores list:

    12. Gus, 14.2 (39);
    15. Nokitano, 13.1 (22);
    17. North, 12.2 (30);
    20. Penguin, 11.64 (32);
    21. Ump, 11.55 (29);
    22. Faye, 11.1 (58);
    24. Jmac, 10.75 (20);
    27. Nalazoo, 10.5 (41);
    32. Vic, 9.5 (28);
    34. CastlePage, 9.2 (20);
    36. Ktc, 8.1 (37).

    Gus on average ends up slightly below third place (15 points); Faye sits on average halfway between 4th and 5th; 'Zoo a little bit above 4th; and Penguin's typical finish is almost 4th.

    Finally, another measure of stayership. We have run 8 Silver Yokes so far, including the current one. There's one person who has scored points in each and every one of them: Faye.

    Four people: 'Zoo, Gus, Vic, and Nokitano, have scored in 7, and a further 10 people have scored in 6. By the way, Vic missed out only on SY8 so he still has a chance (either this race or the next) to make it 8! *hint, hint*

    That's the MOFOs for ya, people: a never ending source of Top Tens, the gift that keeps on giving. Have fun! :D

    Cheers,
    M.

    Thks a bunch Merlion! As a stat whore, I dig all these! Maybe you could put every once in a while a copy of your spreadsheet in a google doc with password clearance. I know I'd like to have a look at it ;)

    About the SY8, I'll try the Auckland event. I've experienced a bit of a PP burnout and more importantly, I bought a Kindle paperwhite and it's great! So most of the times when I casually flung planes on the go, I now am back to reading and that's good :D
