That is news to me! The same goes for us (US) but our dollar has gotten weaker while the games have stayed the same price. Doing more research I've found the consensus to also be that development costs are cheaper now? I couldn't find any solid facts so I'm still searching but if that's the case then yes, we are just getting screwed plain and simple.
During the Gulf War (over two decades ago) the petrol prices in Australia rose dramatically. Since that time they have remained around that same price. Once the companies see that the consumer will pay, they keep them paying.
? Anyone know why in final fantasy tactics when i change my job class my appearance doesnt change? But other guys in my group appearances change fine when i change there job?
how are developement cost cheeper nowerdays if they are hundreds of people involved creating them? big productions nowerdays cost 3 digit millions , the first commercial game i worked on had cost of roughly below 500k € (back then twice the amount in DM) and was a full fledged full price title in germany.. that was a bit more than 10 years ago.. the second title had 5 years later cost around 8 mil € , the rendering intro consumed roughly the costs of the first game. game developement cost rises dramatically. years ago a small team could make a fullprice experience but nowerdays due to technical demand thats not possible anymore. a dialogue text box became lipsynced high quality realtime cutscene.. how can this be cheaper?
I never said they were, notice the question mark?... I have been looking for solid numbers to decide one way or the other but since you find that it's impossible for games to be cheaper nowadays I'd love to hear your opinion and maybe some facts if you could. Since you sound like you know, how come in 1995 Final Fantasy VII was 45 million to develop (most expensive game ever at the time), yet 10 years later FFantasy XII cost 35 million? Do you think advances in technology could also help offset some of these development costs?
well it depends.. of course technology can reduce cost after the first initial investment is done.. like creating a new 3d engine that then can be used for different titles.. i never played ff12 so i can comment on the games quality, content etc. (never been a fan of jrpgs) but ff7 was the first of its kind.. and the production value at that time just skyrocketed it beyond anything else on the playstation. if you then calculate the additional cost of it being a long term project that was initially planed for the n64 if i recall right.. then of course high tech is cheaper nowadays.. you don't need an tremendously expensive sgi workstation to render all the 3d gfx etc. but under the bottom line its not much of a difference since technical expectation is rising for most.. titel 2 needs to be better than title 1 and title 3 needs to blow them both out of the water.. but then usually when it comes to tech once you have it you spend the money on other things that where lacking previously.. see for example the assassins creed series.. the first one was technically just mind blowing in scope.. but everything else, story, gameplay, etc. was sub paar.. but with every other sequel based on the same tech the game got better.. but the total cost did not .. from a quick google search part had a 20% higher budget. so .. overall people can expect higher budget productions on the vita thats a given.. then of course you also pay alot more than on ios. for me the vita is not yet attractive since its "more of the same".. and i don't see a reason to play a lesser uncharted on a mobile platform if i can play the real thing on the big screen.. but then again i'm not a fan of gamelofts offerings either.. which are the cheap knockoffs from bigger sony, ms and nintendo series.. but for alot of "hardcore" gamer this is what they want.. the big games a bit smaller on the go.. and for them the vita may be the best choice..
So excited for Ravensword 2! Been waiting for some proof that they've actually been working on it for a while now. Also really want Forgotten Memories- hasn't it been in development for like 2 or 3 years now? Almost forgot about that game. What would be really sweet is if a sequel to Space Miner was announced as well as a sequel to Aftermath. Loved those games so much- they felt like something I'd play on a real portable gaming device.
All solid points, especially in regards to the initial cost of developing the engine and then reusing it for sequels.. I have seen people argue that they're cheaper nowadays but they can never provide any good statistics other than saying its cheaper to print discs than cartridges... Profit? Yea I definitely agree with ya... AND back on topic, the vita works out great for me as my wife or kid is always hogging the tv.
I think it's only Reality Fighters and a couple of demos? It's a pretty quiet week. (Next week, though, is Sumioni: Demon Arts!)
Yup, just demos as far as I know. I didn't know Sumioni was coming next week. That's good news I guess, the videos I've seen didn't look half bad.
Don't forget that Sumioni is being sold in the US at a bargain price ($19.99), and if the Japanese version is any indication, we might be getting free content updates too in the future. Sounds like a worthwhile purchase to me. Edit: I just realized that this thread has caught up to the 3DS thread already in number of posts.
Is there a good PSV site y'all frequent? I'm interested in ps store updates and any hacking homebrew news. I'm just dying for some emulators on this thing.
Ridge Racer for the PSP sells for 5.99 used at GameStop. 24 tacks and 50+ cars. Ridge Racer for the Vita sells for $29.99, and includes like 6 tracks, with free DLC. I see people crying about the lack of official PSP support on the Vita-portion of PSN. I still own my PSP and these games are so much cheaper on the resale market anyway. It's ridiculous how cheap PSP games are, if you own a physical PSP. You can download officially Final Fantasy Tactics for $9.99 though. This in comparison to 17.99 for the iPad version. I heard there will be demos this week, like Ridge Racer and Hot Shots Golf. Look out for a Motorstorm RC DLC package. Let's not allow "homebrew" to kill the Vita like it did the PSP. "homebrew" or "custom firmware" is just a euphemism 99% of the time for soft-mod piracy. The thing about the 3DS is the release schedule has been very quiet for quite some time now. Obviously, the two heavy hitters, Metal Gear 3D and Resident Evil Revelations, have come out recently, but not much else. Tales of the Abyss has a fanboy following. Kid Icarus Uprising comes out soon. But after that, there will be like a 3-month lull of nothing in terms of a release schedule. It's very quiet on the 3DS scene. Not much to talk about, software-wise, despite all this praising of its hardware sales.
Disagree completely. COMPLETELY. You can't wrap homebrew in the same category as piracy, its not the same thing to put a hobbyist coder in the same light as someone who is unscrupulously copying someone's intellectual property. Thats like saying people who jailbreak only do it for pirated apps, which again is an entirely absurd statement. -_-a
Regardless of how you feel, the piracy that was opened up by the CFW played a large part in PSP's lackluster software sales. I'd hate to see the Vita being hacked so soon.
Lol, it has nothing to do with dev support, Sony's ridiculous fees for devkits, a thin user base, or the cost of developing a mobile game with the same overhead as a full console game now would it? The software lineup was lackluster even before custom firmwares. Nowadays companies have the luxury of reusing assets from the console games the portables are derived from, as well as Sony literally asking devs "what do you want in the vita, how can we make this relationship work this time around?" -_-
