My guess is that after you have the Vita it's the iPhone/iPad you'll have to worry about, not the Vita. Mind you, I think iOS use to be a fun platform for games, but now it's 99% micro-transaction games and those will seem even more awful once you have a Vita. I do still play board games sometimes on my iPad, which aren't free-to-play games, but for the most part I haven't really played much on iOS since getting a Vita, except occasionally firing up one of the older non-microtransaction games.
According to @PlayStationEU there'll be a new trailer and dev update for Frozen Synapse Tactics on Vita for those that are interested.
It's a completely different gaming experience much like DS vs iOS, or console vs iOS. For the quick, several minute gaming experience, it's hard to beat iOS. For a mobile gaming experience that give you close to a console experience (dual sticks, shoulder buttons) it's hard to beat Vita. You can get the Walking Dead Bundle for 180 -190. Includes 4 games - all downloaded. Consider getting the Vita before the new version shows up. Most reviews indicate the screen doesn't look as good. 2 biggish downsides : 1) battery life sucks. 4-5 hours of gameplay is the best I have got before I have to use the charger. 2) memory cards are tiny (so potentially easily lost), and they are expensive. They go on sale, but not frequently, and off sale the prices are obscene. I am overall very happy I have one, and use the Vita for mobile console type gaming, iOS for short games and web surfing. Good luck with your decision.
Today Dustforce is coming out. Looking forward to hearing impressions. I read a review that said it was wonderful, but that you could only progress if you got an S-rank which basically meant that the game was only accessible to hardcore gamers. I do love platformers, but don't love the super-duper frustrating variety. Interested to hear what you all think. Still playing OlliOlli. Am now trying to get in the top 100 for all the spots. Having a lot of fun with that.
I'm tempted to buy Wipeout 2048, I own Wipeout HD & Fury on the PS3 and as I understand they're fully converted and free as an expansion for 2048?
Yep, if you already own them you should get that exapnsion for 2048 for free. The game also supports cross play with the PS3 version of HD and Fury. Personally I preferr the ships and tracks from Wipeout 2048 more, but it's still a nice add on. The only real problem with the game is that there isn't a custom race mode and the online mode doesn't give you a lot of options. The sound and graphics are still some of the best on the system. There's a massive sale on the EU store going on right now (starts today, ends on the 26th) with some pretty good deals on Vita games for once for those at are interested.
One of my kids loves Wipeout 2048, but I found it frustrating myself. It was fun until it got hard, which wasn't far into the game. I find the controls really touchy and that does me in. It bums me that it is not cross-buy, but it's not a deal killer. However if you can only advance with an S-rank, that could be what stops me from enjoying it. There is a demo, so I'll check that out.
I like it the DLC really added to it in my case as I hadn't played fury or HD, before that I was playing Wipeout pulse on the PSP. The one downside of the game is there just isn't enough music tracks included and while you can play tracks fine from the Vita it doesn't work like it did on the PSP and integrate them into the game. Great game though beside that one downside.
I hadn't played any of the Wipeout games before, partly because the Vita was and still is my first and only console, so getting to play a previous entry in the series like that was pretty great, espechially at that price. Personally I like the ship designs, the roaring engines and the (by today's standards) more realistic looking tracks from 2048 more though, I'd say 2048 has a better sense of speed as well. Also the screenshot mode in the game is fantastic, I wish more games let you do this.
Exactly my experience both on PS3 and Vita. Loved the first couple of hours, then the learning curve got too steep for me to bother.
It all comes down to persistence and learning the tracks by heart yes it can be crazy hard beforehand but when you can do a full race without touching a thing the adrenaline rush really makes it all worthwhile. Very few games have that effect on me the only other was Ridge Racer.
Yes, this is an amazing sale. January was good too. I take back what I used to say about registering for a US PSN account if you're European. Before I got my Vita I was doubting between iPad Mini and Vita and one of the minuses for the Vita was "more expensive games" but with all those sales and games that take longer to finish than iOS games I'm not spending more money on games at all. (I can also totally see how this may backfire for Vita devs, because it's just like on iOS: people will wait for a sale, or wait for games to go free in the IGC)
US had a great Vita (and PS3) sale recently too. Steam-level sales are good by me. Picked up Killzone Mercenary for $8 US. Win.
I went and got Wipeout 2048, crazy good fun and sold with the bonus of getting HD and HD Fury. Thanks for the heads up! Frozen Synapse Tactics has a new blog entry and video that goes some way into explaining interface changes, far better than the paste as many buttons on screen approach they took on the iPad: Frozen Synapse Tactics interface overview For those that can't see the video
Played some more OlliOlli and picked up Spelunky for £3.61p. Good stuff. Edit: And Hotline Miami for £2.16p
I liked the demo, but I'm not going to buy it with the "need an S rank to advance" requirement. I like difficult platformers but it sounds like this will be more frustrating than difficult. I guess it's perfect for gamers like you I loved this though: Everyones entry in the board is automatically accompanied by a video of their performance, which you can study and analyse in your attempts to beat them That's amazing! I would love it if OlliOlli had something like that. I always wonder how the people on the top of the leaderboard do it. In Urban Spot 1 (amateur) for example, my high score is around 100.000. The highest score is about 150.000. That's such a huge difference on such a short level, I know they must do something completely different than I do. Perhaps half the fun is in trying things out for yourself though, that's certainly possible.
You're right, that would be an excellent feature in OlliOlli. My top score score for that level is around 133,000. It would be great to see how the experts do it!
