Have to agree on the Silent Hill game being a bad joke it's despicable really after a game like shattered memories on the PSP a game I actually really enjoyed. I didn't buy the Vita for overpriced phone games and I'm losing faith in the platform it just feels like no developer has even tried since Uncharted.

    I do recommend Wipeout though.

Wipeout 2048 actually does have roaring engines, because it's not that far in the future. ;)

Having bought a 3DS XL recently, here's what I think: the Vita is a so much better device it's not even funny... BUT it will have to up the ante considerably if it really wants to debunk Nintendo, lots of mediocre (at best) ports won't scratch Mario and company. The only interesting new IP was Gravity Rush and honestly, it's been 3 months and I'm still struggling to Platinum it, graphics and music are excellent but gameplay is lame and story is the usual japanese silliness.

I sold my 3DS to buy a Vita, and I couldn't agree more. In fact, I decided to move on after playing RE: Revelations, which got a ton of praise in the press as a "return to form" when it seemed to me to be a mediocre action game with a preposterous story and characters, and artificial constraints (slow running speed, awkward aiming and shooting, bullet-sponge enemies) to make it "survival horror." The Vita is, without a doubt, a big step up in almost every way -- except in the actual games, where it really matters.

As I said before, I'm putting my hopes on games like Sly Cooper that are designed, from the ground up, as both PS3 and Vita titles (which is why it was so disappointing when the release was pushed back to 2/2013).

As an aside, I find it amusing when fans talk about the PSP back catalogue (or PS One titles) as a great reason to get a Vita. If Sony could convince 20% of current PSP owners to upgrade to a Vita they would have a massive hit in their hands; it doesn't help the case when people talk about PSP games as one of the best reasons to shell out nearly $300 on a new system. Personally I feel a bit foolish to have spent the money and end up playing Xenogears :p.

That reminds me a lot of test drive unlimited on the PSP which while it wasn't a very realistic driving game it was quite a lot of fun to just cruise around in quite realistic traffic getting into cop chases etc.

I'm not that hopeful though as I haven't really liked any of the need for speed series since the original, I like to be battling corners and using the brake a lot in my driving games, need for speeds always just felt to dumbed down to me I'm hoping WRC 3 might be more up my street.

Ok...I don't have a Vita, but in my experience with the Resident Evil Series (1, nemesis, one of the gamecube re-releases, and a bit of 4), the gameplay has always been characterized by slow running, ponderous aiming, and, while you didn't mention it, terrible camera angles. And bullet sponge enemies.

I guess that's why I never played one for more than 20 minutes or so. That and not being able to move and shoot at the same time. I forget, in the early ones, could you even move and turn at once?

The gameplay has always been like that, and it wasn't a problem in the first games because it served a purpose (building tension and giving you trouble in a survival horror setting) and did it very well. You were meant to be uncomfortable and struggling for survival every moment. But the recent games are more and more action games, and in that setting the controls are horrendous.

Well said. I don't mind "awkward" combat if it fits the tone and narrative of the game (case in point: Silent Hill 2). But when you are supposed to be playing super agents who are perfectly cool in the midst of the horrific proceedings, it makes the game feel incompetent, rather than scary.

Not necessarily, I think it's more about your location. When you're out in the middle of a city and you've got a larger field of vision on your immediate surroundings, you're putting yourself less at risk by running around because you can see far enough around you to react when unexpected incidents present themselves. I think RE:Revelations is a perfect example of why its more realistic, given the scenario, for people to move much slower. When you're on a seemingly abanded ship with no idea what's going on and you find yourself almost entirely confined to small corridors barely a few feet wide with little to no power, you're naturally going to move much slower. They move much slower because their training has taught them that it doesn't matter how much of a 'super agent' you are, you'd have to be a complete dumbass to go running around a maze or corridors in the dark when you've no idea what's around the next corner.

It's not really much of a Need for Speed game though- it's pretty much a Burnout game with the Need for Speed name, from what the devs and the press have said.

I actually enjoyed Resident Evil: Revelations. It's one of the most enjoyable RE games I've played recently. Haven't played 6 yet, but Revelations was much better received than it was. I actually had fond memories of Resident Evil 4 and bought the HD remaster off PSN for my PS3. Playing it now, it has funky controls (you get used to them after a while), and it gets really boring- so I've rarely played it for more than an hour at a time, if even that. Not to mention the story, which starts out okay and then becomes absolutely ridiculous. IMO, most survival horror games aren't very good anymore. I think the best of the bunch now are the Dead Space series, and Amnesia.

Totally agree! I'm a massive Resi fan and have been since the first one launched on the PSOne. I own every single Resi title (even picked up a reproduction copy of Sweet Home on the NES to check out its spiritual predecessor) and although some are terrible (Gun Survivor springs to mind), I'd have to say that Revelations is the best Resi title in quite some time. Capcom did a great job fusing the old with the new and as an overall package, it's great value for money. It's not a portable game but a full blown console game on a portable. It's not perfect but it stands as one of the perfect examples of why dedicated handhelds like the 3DS and Vita are without question, far superior for 'traditional' games than iOS.

I agree about good survival horror games being hard to find these days. I love the horror levels in LBP, some of the user created levels have been giving me the creeps these last few days. Apparently there's some legitimate game designers in LBPV, and some of them do a great job of incorperating stories in their levels, it's pretty astonishing, really. I don't think one can ever be 'done' with this game, which is in my opinion the best handheld game of any platform hands down (although I don't even own a 3DS but I plan on this holiday, most likely ).

Also looking forward to AC:L and Most Wanted (<-- can't wait to get this in my Vita). Criterion seem to be taking the PSV version very seriously.

I get the corridor thing, but there are plenty of examples of games set in confined spaces that allow you to move much faster and (more to the point) nimbler -- think the ship sequence in COD: MW or most of BioShock. And of course not all of RE:R is set inside the ship, but regardless of where you are the game controls in the same awkward, lumbering way. In any event, it's hard to think of RE as "realistic" in any way, what with the healing herbs and the conveniently placed gas tanks during boss fights. To me the game just felt like an action movie in which they'd forgotten to replaced the pretty-boy and pretty-girl actors with stuntmen.

I know that many folks saw RE:R as a return to form. I find that opinion hard to understand, since the original REs were scary, and RE:R didn't even manage to be suspenseful. For me it also didn't work as an action game.

We're kind of way off topic now, though ;).
