IGN review out- 5.5/10 Think gonna get it anyway as dying to play a FPS and im sure the online will be great
Think I'm going to wait on Resistance or skip it all together- mainly because its story sucks, and the campaign is short. Multiplayer is fun, but I mostly play games for the story. A bad story just makes a game less enjoyable. Battlefront: Elite Squadron is a great example. Had such a horrible story that I almost didn't finish the campaign- that, and the fact that the campaign messed up the Battlefront formula.
Resistance Burning Skies on Gamesradar: 4/10 Looks like I'll be passing on this game unless the demo completely changes my mind.
Short campaign was what I was worried about 5 to 6 hours is pretty bad especially at Vita prices, still undecided myself if I liked multiplayer things it would be different but I haven't played a good multiplayer fps since unreal tournament. I don't trust IGN reviews much though they gave some of the best PSP games terrible ones and seemed to have a grudge against the system. Playing a wait and see at the minute hopefully some reliable sites do a review.
Not really surprised that Resistance: Burning Skies isn't that great- I mean, look at Nihilistic's track record. Their most acclaimed game has an average of 74- and that was their first title (Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption). Their last title (Playstation Move Heroes) has an average of 52.
The way I read it Sterling wasn't complaining about them using the touchscreen, he was complaining about features that shouldn't be using it using it anyway because hey, "this new device has a touchscreen, let's cram as many features on to it as possible because it's so new and special." or something. (not an actual quote of anything there of course)
You all can hate and skip the game. But hey, more you skip the game, vita won't be getting any new games. Game is alright over all. There aren't any glitches that it's such a big deal that you can't even move or anything. Lots of reviewers made all the problems sounds way big and made the game sounds like "broken game" And also I would say I am happy that people gave this game not that good score, because I knew this game can't be more than 7 since the studio is just terrible who NEVER WORKED WITH FPS GAMES..... Hope killzone and cod devs see this and make sure they don't #### up their games. But hey, it's still fun and enjoyable. I will be honest, it's not the game that sell vita. But it shows what vita could do with FPS games.
Im getting it over Gravity Rush as i agree with someones comment that its just aiming and slamming the ground Rather shoot things repetitively instead
I think I'll wait for the Metal Gear Solid collection thingy, because I've never played those games and in the gameplay videos it looked pretty amazing.
Just to rant slightly Have to admit I haven't liked the use of the touchscreen in the Vita either I'm just hoping companies stop trying to use it for no good reason, but the back touchpad is in my opinion the worst decision Sony made with regards to the console I've always been convinced that they only put it there as an excuse to prevent battery changes, I've yet to play a game where it hasn't been more of a nuisance than useful. I do think the touchscreen will be much more useful when people make apps with ps suite but for gaming in general touchscreens are pretty awful for most genres Still happy with my Vita and still playing everybodys golf and disgaea 3 a lot, I still may pick up Resistance anyway though as theres such a big gap in review scores. Seems some hate it and some really like it.
Yeah definately buying that just for MGS3 as played the 2nd to death, but will get Resistance to tide me over for the next month,if i dont like it ill trade it towards the Metal Gear collection. Hope at least some of you guys get Resistance-be good to play multiplayer against all of you
I think I will pick it up myself I've been looking at some videos of people playing it and some reviews just starting to appear and to me at least it looks like a good game. I kind of suspect certain reviewers just hate anything handheld by Sony the PSP got the same treatment, but then again there is really no way to know for sure without playing it.
According to Pocket Gamer, there's nothing wrong with Resistance, other then the fact that it's a standard, non-innovative FPS. Which, on handhelds, is something we've never seen before. That seems to be the prevailing theory. The scores from reviewers reflex as much; an average FPS. I'll get in anyway, for the above mentioned qualifier, if no other reason. It's something that we've never seen before on a handheld platform. Even Pocket Gamer, after saying that it average for a FPS, gave it an 8.0. Basically, its not average for a handheld game. Only in comparison to home console gaming is it average.
Obviously you haven't played FIFA using the back touchpad. I thought using the touchpad to aim and power up your shots was brilliant. I do agree, however, that some games try to use the touchpad as a gimmick, whether that be a mode in SuperStarDust or playing a few levels in Little Deviants using it. I can see sport games utilizing it more than other games, though. I feel using the touchpad to kick a field goal in Madden 13 could be an upgrade to the game besides a downgraded gimmick.
For the most part, Unit13 used the touch screen very well. What they did was use the screen as an extra set of context sensitive buttons that were within reach of your thumbs. This i like. What I don't like is the use of onscreen buttons that move, or are in the middle of the touch screen and require you to take your hand off one the controls to get at it. - Also, not to beat a dead horse, but comparing R:BS against Nova 3 is a little unfair. N3 really offers nothing new in the way of FPS either, however it did take iOS FPS to new graphical heights. This is something we haven't seen before, so its not surprising it has gotten so much attention. However behind the smoke and mirrors, its not much of a ground breaking game either. I'm getting R:BS once the digital download is up.
So, besides constant comparisons to nova 3 (eye candy isn't everything, sheesh), what are you disappointed in? The gameplay? Short campaign? Seems that so far the only disappoints are graphics and short campaign, other than that its pretty much standard. That guy from destructiod or whatever was mostly just bitching. How's the multiplayer? Gun selection? Maps? Game modes?
Except it's just not Jim Sterling, almost everyone gave the game mediocre reviews. Nihilistic Software doesn't exactly have the greatest track record either. Multiplayer only has 3 modes with 6 maps, and there are only 8 guns iirc.
Never much liked destuctoid myself I listened to their podcast a few times and they spent the whole thing (poptoid) talking about paedophilia and was it justified and they seem to do have this conversation nearly every show really makes me think something is not quite right there, but yeah I've heard them pretty much admit they sometimes give bad reviews to get people commenting. Not saying resistance is going to be a great game they have obviously rushed it a bit and the campaign is smaller than I would like but it looks good enough to risk for me and I think with it being a big title they will give it a few patches down the line and smooth out the rough edges. Confusing thing is some of the online reviews are rating it as high as 9 and some as low 2 I suspect it's at least a 7 personally.
I was mixed about Resistance when watching the previews and seeing screenshots of the game. Then came the reviews which seemed average for now. I think that helped bring my expectations back down because I went in expecting the worst. I actually am in the process of playing NOVA 3 on my iPad right now and felt that, while visually impressive, seemed relatively plain in terms of gameplay mechanics and AI. So far, Resistance seems to be average on this front as well. Enemies spawn or pop out and occasionally take cover, but for the most part, run towards you or stand out in the open. Maybe these are just dumb grunts (never played a Resistance game before), so maybe there might be more intelligent enemies later. What I do somewhat like is the atmosphere so far. The radio chatter you get is pretty good and the dialogue isn't cheesy so far. I played with earphones on and the sound quality sounds as good as most games so I'm not sure what the issues would be there. As someone else mentioned though, some of the guns sound pretty weak. The first Alien gun in particular reminds me of popcorn popping or something. Graphically it's not bad. The environments seem pretty fleshed out right now, but it's just missing some of that "shine". Not sure, everything looks just kind of flat. The framerate has been stable, which is great, so I'm really happy about that since the initial trailers looked somewhat jerky. Overall, I'd probably rate this a 7 if I had to throw a number out there. It's not bad and I'm enjoying it so far. As a handheld FPS it's great. The only comparisons I can draw are those from the DS, PSP and even iOS. Controls alone, this wins hands down. Taken as a handheld game, it's very good, but I think we'll all compare it to other console games in the same genre which is why I think most will think it's mediocre.
