My iPad is in Spanish and didn't let me play past Egypt day 3, I started a new game in my iPad but I beat the day 3 level on my iPhone 5( Spanish too) and then it worked, now I'm at level 4, so this doesn't seem to be a language related bug.

You need to let the game download the extra assets, when I opened the game for the first time it was a download bar at the top of the screen, once it finished all was retina crisp.

Usually with these consumable IAP games, whether or not you need to buy the IAP is a matter of your tolerance for repetition. Some people are fine with playing the same thing over and over and others are not. So is there the need to play the same levels over and over in order to continue?

Other than the annoying grind or go broke with consumable IAP BS I don't see what it does that the original doesn't. I uninstalled it and reinstalled the original.

Nope. Once you've completed the main path through a world, each of those core levels opens into a three-star system, with each star requiring you meet a different fixed challenge. Each level usually has a specific theme or concept attached to it that each of the challenges plays off, e.g. many of a specific type of enemy, or training you to use a certain plant more effectively. There are a lot of different levels, and you're not restricted to a specific route or order once you've cleared the main path, so you're free to move to another challenge if the one you're attempting is repeatedly kicking you in the Dandenongs.

For example, you might technically play one level three times to get all three of its stars, but the first time around you are limited to spending a certain amount of sun, the next time you can't plant in certain spots on the playfield, and the last time you can't let zombies cross over a column of flowers or lose more than three plants. In all three cases the required goals, zombie waves and playfield objects/obstacles will be different, so it doesn't feel like you're just playing the exact same level over and over.

There are also many minor paths that lead off from the central one that have even stronger themed challenges and provide new plants and upgrades. These paths require keys to unlock, which drop randomly from zombies through normal play. Some of the levels are also new "minigames", and there are also a number of more puzzlish levels that give you a set roster of plants to use, or provide a set amount of sun and basically require you to set up your entire defense based on the upcoming zombies you can see in the holding area before the round even starts.

The consumable IAP coins are also earned in-game, and are only used for single-shot last-ditch-escape powerups in the stages, not plants, upgrades or level unlocks, so anybody telling you that you need to "grind" for that currency is talking nonsense. Unless you're embarrassing yourself by trying to brute-force your way through the levels via powerups alone, you won't run out of cash, because that's all you can spend it on.

    No retina on ipod 4G..

disappointed there is no retina on ipod 4G- and with all the extra downloading at startup it would have been expected to at least include retina display
Also, where are the puzzle games which were in the menu of original game? I dont see them anywhere:( so what do ppl use the coins for in this game then if not to unlock those puzzle games?

I don't see how this works either. I linked my facebook in case that was it but still no joy. Considering that this feature is supposed to be what held up the release I would be pretty embarrassed if I was the developer. The instructions on their web page just talk about how to make backup work - which does not work either by the way. The only thing I can think of is that I am still in the tutorial and perhaps they don't sync the tutorial process.

Mine is working. I tried to reinstall the game to see if it stopped freezing and it restored my progress, even though I still can't play past Egypt day 2...

I applied the update on the iPhone and then it started working. Suspect that they fixed something in the update.

Wow, I had a feeling there was no retina for my iPod 4G. I know my device is very old now but I can get retina for modern combat 4 but not for plants vs zombies 2, that is very odd.... Well that's EA for ya.

Wow, thanks for that write up. I'm not through making it through Egypt for the first time yet and was wondering how all that would work.

Apples and oranges, I'm afraid, and nothing at all to do with EA being involved. PvZ2 uses a huge amount of incredibly high-resolution 2D artwork and animation, which a 4th-gen device simply can't fit into its limited memory.

The developers of Ravenmark removed Retina-based graphics for 4th-gen iPod Touch devices shortly after the game was released for exactly the same reason: trying to fit the required artwork into memory just made the whole game unstable and crash.

It's obvious you didn't play that far in, if at all. New mechanics are added throughout the game, there are new plants and enemies, new powerups, and the fertilizer adds a new level to the offensive part of the game by giving every plant a secondary attack. Not to mention the three star goal system that opens up once you beat a world.

There's a ton of improvements/additions from the original

And there's no need to grind. Coins flow freely and you don't need to use them that much, unless you really suck...

Fair enough, It's time for me to upgrade this Christmas anyways, but I do find it odd that a game that's as big as Modern combat 4 or Infinity blade 2 can provide retina, but a 2D game can't ? At least it's available for iPod 4 so I'm happy about that.

Btw, Are you enjoying this game better than the original Plants vs Zombies?

While it may seem counter-intuitive on the surface, 2D games are frequently more resource-intensive than 3D ones when it comes to the graphics, especially when you're dealing with a lot of unique high-res animated assets all being used at once.

PvZ2 offers significantly more in the way of gameplay challenges, although it is missing a couple of modes from the original, such as the night levels. There are additional worlds in production, however, so we may see some of those elements make a return in the future. On the whole I much prefer the range of choices available in this game: my usual setup is actually a melee-based defense, which is a new and welcome option.
