The base version is half the game (half the races and half the planes) and can already stand on its own, just that half is already bigger than any other 4x games on the app store.

With all bugs that were fixed (except for that zooming out thing me and ZC mentionned, nothing gamebreaking though and only seems to be happening with iOS 8 and 9) the game runs flawlessly.

Without forgetting they are a small team of indie devs that definitely need to get all the sales they can, I encourage you to give them a chance #

Edit : I paid full price for the game (15CAD for base + 25CAD for add on content) and feel like i got my money's worth. On sale its an absolutely good buy.

I actually started playing with Avalon Hill wargames in '77. I liked the big strategic level games. I wish somebody would put some of those games on iOS but I suspect it will never happen. If Matrix would put their World in Flames on iOS, I would be really happy. Especially is they did it in the original regimental scale instead of corp/army. Yes I am grognard as it used to mean not the current meaning. My first Video were in the arcade but I was not big fan. High scores are mostly about twitch not strategy. When I was in high school a friend's dad have a terminal and we would log into the local university and play the old ASCII Star Trek missions, that is really my first playing of digital games. I liked Dungeon and Dragons so I played Pool of Radiance as well.

I am in the Canadian Military and spent four years living in Schiftung outside Baden-Baden 88-92. I enjoyed it a lot. The airbase is closed and is now a civilian airport "Flugharen Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden". When I was in Kiel in 2002, I took weekend to drive back to the Baden area. A lot of change in the decade. Windmills and Cell Towers everywhere on my drive. Far more parts of the autobahns with 130 or less now. Halberstung still had my favourite imbiss ate a curry wurst. It was also nice eat in a few of the gasthof I loved from before. Thanks for taking me down memory lane. My German is very rusty now. Bitteschön. ;)

Thank you. I have a number of Slitherine titles. They make pretty good tactical/operational level games but their strategic games tends to be simplified.

You're more than 200 years old!

    Respect.

Have you tried Slitherine's "Commander - The Great War"? I've been eying it.
(Hmm ... I see there's a Napoleonic "Commander" game, but not for iOS.)

I just checked the zooming on 125 and 131f and both seems to be working exactly the same way.

    Thanks, doomtrader!
Can you share what device(s) and iOS version(s) you tested on?
Since we have at least one iOS 10 device (mine) where all seems ok, and at least 3 iOS 8/9 where it does not, maybe we can narrow it down like this.

Interesting. Also, what device are you using? I've just checked it on iPhone 6S and it doesn't seem so noticeable - will compare to iPad later and see if it's just my eyes/brain playing tricks. I was convinced the iPad version felt more zoomed in. I guess a count of grid squares at maximum zoom level will tell us definitively, will let you know. In advance, sorry if I'm making a fuss over nothing but wouldn't have said it if it hadn't been real - odd that Milotouro and I both thought the same though.

Edit: just seen your post re: Air 2 & 9.3.3

The Great War is the best strategic level wargame on iOS I have played. With the research and development it is better than most WWI games. It relatively fluid on the eastern front, turkey and Balkans. WWI is not my favorite time period. Napoleonic or WW2 is more interesting to me.

Ok, so I'm not going mad! There's a difference between iPhone and iPad scaling without a doubt. I appreciate that the amount that can be fitted on the screen may be to do with screen ratios (ie difference between iPhone ratio to iPad ratio) but that shouldn't overly affect the scaling of the assets - and yet it appears it does.

To explain - counting from top right corner to bottom left, iPad Air has 18 grid squares but iPhone 6S has 21. I would assume from this that the iPhone has a larger w:h screen ratio despite being a smaller screen.

Assets on the tiles at the closest point (ie bottom left corner) are disproportionately larger on iPad than they are on iPhone - perhaps that's the wrong phrase to use; if iPhone screen is smaller but has larger ratio, not only is the viewpoint further out but the assets are naturally smaller as well. Conversely, the iPad has a closer focal point (due to smaller screen ratio perhaps?) and larger assets which combine to give the impression the zoom is much closer than it is?

So in conclusion.....I'm still stumped! iPad definitely has a more 'scaled in' viewpoint than the iPhone but I'll be buggered if I can figure out why?!

I would post pics but the TA app won't let me and I don't do image sharing sites etc I'm afraid. I'd be happy to email Devs if you're interested?

A grognard means a wargamer who see nothing wrong with a wargame that takes an hour or two just lay out the counters on the map, Game Designer Workshop made the ultimate games for Grognards. Their WWII Europa Series was the biggest commercial wargame ever. For example Narvik which just the invasion of Norway had 720 counters and the map was two sheets 20"x28". The map did not show much of Norway north of Narvik either. I saw the Russian front for Europa series setup once at GENCON in '88. Over 5,000 counters and two days to set it up. They got 8 turns (4 months of game time) played in two days.

I am aware of the Napoleonic meaning

Playing on a IPhone 7+ 256g iOS 10.2 only issue is the icons detach from map occasionally. Saving and restarting fixes it. It has happened three time in 110 turns. Happens far less often then before update.

@Nina: just teasing you with the Napoleon remark, all in good fun ;)
While I never met one "in the wild", since wargaming wasn't that big were I come from (more table roleplaying and LARP), luckily I know what Grognards are; thanks to the "Denizens of the Table Almanach, with many a colored drawing of such strange beasts", p.231 ff. :p
That Gencon story is amazing. 5000+ pieces on the board? Crazy, I think I've never seen anything larger than maybe 200 pieces.
And re: "I started with the Avalon Hill games": That's the stuff of legends for me, I stand in awe ;)

I get the icon detaching thing sometimes too, still. Luckily, just like you write, it happens a lot less often now. And it seems limited to the counters for capturing Nodes now. Didn't have it yet that the whole "icon layer" (with units, towns, and all) detached again. Definitely an improvement.

    @ZS77:
Just counted, and I get to 18 squares on my Air, too. I don't notice any difference to the previous version, so I wonder if things changed only on the iPhone side. Or my memory is getting hazy, things did change on the iPad too, and I just don't notice / can't remember :p

In any case, being able to zoom out further would be great.
@doomtrader: Can you consider that for one of the next updates?
