This is another issue im having. The dev is only responding to the people that are not complaining but are showering praise on the game. The dev has enstated a gold doubler, but again, this is just an addition to an already available purchase for a progression doubler. They have stated that they will keep working on the game, regardless of how many stars the game has received, and the attitude just come across as defiant as I think most people are not complaining because they want to see the game fail, rather they are passionate and believe this game could be something more than it is. This makes me think of another game under similar circumstances. Dungeon Survival is a Darkest Dungeon knock off, with a .99 price tag, and on the outward appearance, was almost a plagiarized copy of Redhooks work (minus the stress mechanic, and it was just all around simplified), however after a while, you ran into insane rest times to heal, and more over, required an exorbitant amount of gold to heal them as well, this in turn encouraged purchasing gold, which in the end, meant players spent even more on Dungeon Survival, as you can easily pour enough money into gold purchases to eclipse the $4.99 price tag of the ORIGINAL Darkest Dungeon, a game that is arguably superior in every way to Dungeon Survival. How is this different here, except it seems like you get less play time before you hit the wall? This is a Slay the Spire clone with Pirates clothing, and as has there has been a massive increase in card battlers, specifically roguelikes, it almost feels like games like this exist to take advantage of, and cash in on the desire to see certain games ( like slay the spire ) make their way to mobile. I do believe the devs set out to create a solid game here, as the foundation is all there. Good mechanics, solid game play, nice card variety, good amount of unlocks, but it is all behind a F2P style IAP wall. Im sure there are those that will dedicate to the grind, be it that they like the experience itself, or that they are dead set on not spending on the IAP. However, I can think of at least 3 other games that are FAR superior in content and quality than Pirates: Outlaws. They even include IAP, but the IAP are for characters and bonus CONTENT. No currency that makes the game "fair" to play, or doublers that make progression on par with the premium experience the game wants you to think it provides. 148apps.com reviewed this title, and they state in their review, that this could be the best card battler around, and then note this "The other (and perhaps more annoying) issue with Pirates Outlaws is its monetization scheme. On top of paying the $0.99 to download the game, Pirates Outlaws has a full-on store where you can buy currencies that unlock new characters and maps. There seems to be a way to experience almost all of this content without paying anything, but road to grinding out all of the necessary currency to do that is extremely long. If you get way into this game, I could see this as a way to keep giving you something to work toward, but it seems much more likely that people will walk away from this experience either having bought all of the additional content or not paying any additional money and not having unlocked much of anything." -148apps.com Could not say it better myself. They rated the game the same score as TA did.... and TA didnt even bring up the store.... which would say to me that 148 probably enjoyed the game better, but was soured by the IAP.
Im really glad to see you getting your moneys worth, and in a way I envy you, because I wish I could enjoy this game as much as others are, it really does have awesome potential and card battlers are so perfect for mobile!!! So again, I guess my over all feeling is one that this is a missed opportunity. I do respect where you are coming from, and you do have some valid points. I will give the game another shot, and see about surrendering early to keep those better rewards.
Well said. There are so many games in this genre now that aren’t laiden with all these F2P style mechanics. So while this game has the potential to stand out, the way it is monetized and incredibly slow progression make it difficult to see why it is worth the effort or even to spend a bit more. The completion currently eats this game alive in terms of a value and frustration. Adding more balance to the economy (not just the doubler) may help the game do better in the long run and get more word of mouth. As it is, it’s too easy to just say, meh, I’ll move on to one of the many others that are equally as good. It’s just not worth the effort. Whether the dev and others in this thread who disagree with us believe it, we are trying to help.
exactly, thats the frustrating part. It could be SOOOOO GOOD. It really could, because the GAME itself is solid. Its the IAP and the insane progression requirements that ruin an otherwise solid experience. If those things changed, holy mackerel, it'd be hard to put this one down, like, truly.
I would expect the devs to grant this to all who purchased the doubler without having to buy another one. Otherwise there will be another outrage (including me). Having said that, although not expected but could be a good gesture from the dev to retroactively go back and provide us with those missed out gold based on our progression (for those who bought the doubler prior to this gold change). I.e. the number of gold left in your account, the gold you have earned by unlocking new island, new char, and double those. Oh well, one could dream.
it would definitely speak volumes to what the dev is willing to do to "make this right" if this happened, but given the response from the devs at this point (or lack there of) I do believe you and I will maintain a state of "wishful thinking" for the time being.
nevermind... i'm still busy with NOTFM, Silent Abyss and even Endless Road, wich is really intriguing and weird enough to keep me caught on it (and it's a F2P one!!! )
Endless Road is F2P but the only IAPs (like Silent Abyss) are for other characters. Most you can spend on the game is $3.99.
I love each time you get to the boss and it says “I am the boss, and I am going to kill you!” and the only way you can continue is tap “yes” .......doesn’t fill one with a lot of confidence Back on topic; Possible bug or am I not understanding something? The card Good News. It’s description says “Skill. Draw 2 cards for each enemy that is injured.” Whenever I use it and an enemy has already lost some hp I don’t get another 2 cards drawn. Does it mean the enemy needs to have a temp injury such as bleed and simply losing some hp is not regarded as “injured”?
My run was ended after getting defeated by the second boss on the first map. Ive got 212 gold. Guess the doubler works now?
Just tested another scenario. Defeated first boss and call it quite before proceeding to second island. I’ve got the devil’s bargain (receive extra gold if you defeat the boss) 200 gold + 200 gold (devil’s bargain) + 50 repute. I wonder how much would I have lost say if I progressed to second island but lost halfway. Maybe the dev can indicate in the final score screen the gold deduction from defeat, just to give more clarity. Also I dunno what’s the difference between choosing 1 island that cost a certain AP versus another one that’s much higher? Does that contains harder mobs and yield higher $?
With the update out gold is really ok now with the doubler. Completing island 1 is 200 gold Island 2 is 400 gold Island 3 is 1000 gold Reputation is clearly not a problem (i m now up to 5000+ reputation.. ) Sure there s quite a bit of playing required to unlock everything but the gameplay is good and if you play properly you can make it to island 2 or 3 on each run ... If you don’t buy the doubler, yeah you will have to grind hard. But for 99c i d say it’s warranted. It’s an easy 4.5 stars for me now.
While that’s good to hear. The sad fact of mobile/iOS is that we shouldn’t have to talk about this monetisation rubbish. It should just be down to the level of “SIB Pirates Outlaws for XX.XX?”. Not...basically the way it is. But that’s the enabling factor of the mobile/iOS pricing/ipa ecosystem unfortunately. Anyway, hate to rant, hopefully the new update is essentially equal to a premium price of $x (what like $5 or so?? Happy to go more), and just a good experience rather than a grind just because the fish net needs to be there. Dammit, I digress again! Hopefully this fixes things. I’ll think about buying the doubler but they would’ve had me at a premium of circa $8-10 originally on its merits tbh.
The situation on mobile is this way mainly due to the players - not due to the companies - Most players abide by the freemium model, and as such, companies adapt their business model. Here, indeed, if you buy the game + the doubler, you'll get something very close to a premium game., and it'll cost about 5 bucks. Note - Since I started playing earlier this week, I'm now sitting at ~5000 reputation (which has unlocked all upgrades) 2 unlocked characters + 2 upgrades + 6500 gold 1st world completion rate is now a little less than 70% All I need now is gold & XP to keep unlocking stuff. If double gold rewards had been available from the beginning, I would have got a total of about 30,000 Gold (Instead I got ~19,500), which would have unlocked all characters + 2 upgrades and be working on unlocking the 2nd island That's more than fair in my standpoint. I'll probably buy the additional character as a token support for the devs - I really hope this game gets additional content (Characters, map) and support.
Seems that I’ve encountered a bug where it was during my turn. I’ve killed off 1 of the enemy. Left another cook enemy. Im using the explorer. My turn refreshes with new set of cards. I cannot drag any of the card out to play. I can however tap on other controls such as settings or even check my discard pile or library or even tap on individual card to see the description. Force quit the app, reload. Restarted the fight with 2 enemies. Again, after dispatching the first one and the cook remained, card refreshed. My turn. Can’t play any of the cards. Tried for the 3rd time and it works. Phew. Any one experienced this before?
Yeah, I faced the same kind of issues yesterday. It seemed to be quite random unfortunately... I'm unsure what causes the problem
