    Problems buying tables today?

Bought TOM last night (squee!) on my iPad. Today at work at lunch I'm trying to grab it for my iPhone. I downloaded the app, but am getting "You must connect to the internet in order to download or purchase tables" and "In-app purchases are not allowed.". Huh?

I think the AppStore is being a bit squirrely at the moment. I have a few apps that I just updated to the latest versions of on my iPad that iTunes is still telling me there is an update waiting and then when I tried to update it wouldn't connect.

Yeah, this really shows up if you look at the backboard of table before you start a game, when the camera is moving around to show you the table. You can see how at a certain distance, the textures switch to low-res.

I'm sure it helps maintain a rock-solid FPS on old devices, which is more important than crisp textures IMO. When Farsight gets a little time, I don't think it will be too hard for them to remove this "feature" on newer devices so they have sharper graphics.

I think the physics on these tables is amazing! I don't believe that anyone who says otherwise has ever played an actual pinball table.

Also I agree that on an iPad 2 the textures could definitely look better. But it's not that important - the tables themselves are all really great.

the FB implementation is definitely pretty borked at the moment. It doesn't seem to be updating the leaderboards, and I tapped the "tables" button while checking the boards just now and the game went into a crazy infinite loop trying to access FB. Had to shutdown the app and restart...

I trust they are working on it though... :) I think the leaderboards will be pretty cool once its sorted.

haha, I thought the same thing. I'm hoping they add that as an option in the future - there is no reason why they can't change the way the DMD is displayed.

I am still happy, that I can put real pinball machines in my pocket.
Black Hole plays surprisingly well. I hope, there will be other em pinballs too.
Still hoping for the all time classics Eight Ball Deluxe and Paragon.

Eight Ball Deluxe would be awesome. Not familiar with Paragon.

Maybe somebody already pointed this out, but it turns out you can play landscape on iPhone. The trick is that you can only switch (by rotating) at the game select screen. Confusing, and you can't switch mid-game, but at least it works one way or the other. That makes play on the iPhone much more comfortable and my fingers aren't covering too much of the screen. Yeah!

I think the same applies to the iPad, I had probably switched at the game select there, which is why it worked.

yep, that was noted long ago. :)

Just scored 31.5 mil on Arabian Nights on my Iphone4. :) Hoping the leaderboards start updating soon...

Landscape is available on iPhone, but you just have to turn your phone to landscape before starting the app or table. You can't change it once you start a table.

Edit: sorry this was just posted on the last page. I was a few pages behind when I posted :)

I just wish I could play in landscape on my phone. That would make this game perfect!

Gotta agree. I think people are so used to Zen's watered down physics that they think that's how pinball really is. This is much closer to the real thing.

for me, its not as much about the physics as it is the table design. Theres just no denying the benefit of tables that have actually been tested in the rw. I find so often in Zen that it just feels like I'm randomly slapping the ball around and hoping for the best. In PA I feel like I have access to the whole table and can actually play the thing.

The just announced on Facebook that they are working on fixing the leader boards, but it will likely require an app update. More importantly, they announced that they will be adding Game Center for leader board "no later than early April". Yeah! Well, maybe not yeah for April, but yeah for at all.

Also completely concur about Zen pinball. Their games are poorly designed all around. Basically they are fans of pinball, but don't actually know how to design a game, nor how to test it. Also the physics in Zen are irritatingly repetitive.

Please, let's not make this into a Zen bashing thread. As pointed out earlier, they aren't the same thing. Zen tables have a fantasy aspect to them, doing all sorts of crazy things you could never do in a physical machine. That is their strength in many ways. This is like comparing apples and oranges. Both are fruit (pinball) and both are very tasty, but they are different. I happen to love both. Either one has better physics and graphics than a game like Tristan, yet I still love that too.

It is phenomenal that we have so many choices of excellent pinball apps to play.

My only complaint so far with Pinball Arcade, is that the ball is sometimes hard to see. If it was a little more "shiny" I think it would help track it. I'm not saying add a "whoosh" effect like Zen does, but just brighter.

    Otherwise I really like it.

First off, I'm LOVING Pinball Arcade. It's so nice to have an app that clearly is made with love and respect for the classic pins of yore. Other than the eventual code optimization to allow i5 devices like the iPad2 to "handle" the high rez textures, this app is a home run in my book! Grats!!

To Rudi's point from the last page, he's spot on about Paragon which I think was sort of a cult sleeper hit. i never hear anything but affection from those who have played it. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, there were a handful of places that had it and I spent many afternoons feeding it quarters back in the day.

Paragon was a late 70's "wide" pinball machine from Bally that remains one of my top 5 machines of all time. First off, it was absolutely beautiful, and EXTREMELY playable. The sound had that great iconic Bally digital tone to it, in the same way that you would always recognize an Atari pinball from the same era by it's sound as well. Plus, with features like a double flipper, a mini flipper on the top left, a domino line of drop targets giving increasing bonuses (think 8ball), a cup that catches the ball at the top to help spell out PARAGON, a cool little zig zag gated entry on the right, and just lots and lots to do.

I hope that the programmers will remember this table when the time comes to consider their next move.

If you want to see it in action, go to youtube and just search for Bally Paragon. Just listening to the start up sound brings back so many memories.

Finally, if you have a PC, there is a really good virtual pinball table made from the machine that has kept my interest over the years.

    Bring us some Paragon!!!

    Cheers,

    RobbW
