PandaArcade Well-Known Member Nov 22, 2017 195 76 28 http://picotanks.com #13 PandaArcade, Feb 7, 2020 I'm sorry to hear we haven't reached your expectations with the final game, macsplash. It's true, we did focus on testing customisations, gameplay and multiplayer for most of the beta, but we did introduce module upgrading using currency in Version 14.0, and crates in Version 19.0. To give you perspective, public Beta ran through Versions 3.0-20.0, Soft-Launch (Early Access) ran through Versions 23.0-30.0, and Global Launch is Version 30.2 onwards. Because we wanted to test playing matches and everything involves with that (ie weapons, abilities, bases, maps, modes, communication, multiplayer) everything was unlocked during the beta and everything was at maximum power. It was super fun, don't get me wrong - but the reality is we needed progression, we needed to give players the chance of discovery and a desire to achieve more every time you play. We want Pico Tanks to be a game where you constantly grow and become more powerful. Missions, crates, research etc are all extra ways you can earn and progress. It gives players a choice in how they grow their arsenal. We wanted to provide multiple ways so that people don't feel forced to make an in-app purchase. We chose to make a free-to-play game rather than a premium one because we wanted Pico Tanks to be accessible. Our game is multiplayer, so it makes sense to make the game free so that there is no initial barrier for entry and there are always players around to play with each other. What would be your ideal free-to-play model? During the entirety of the beta, our page on the store specified that our app contained ads. We've taken that off, because we never put them in. That point in the Privacy Policy is just in case we ever wanted to actually include ads. However right now, we are only relying on in-app purchases which are 100% optional. You can still play, earn and progress without spending anything. We are still tweaking things based on player feedback. ste86uk likes this. macplash Well-Known Member Apr 17, 2014 2,645 1,103 113 Male 3D artist Munich, Germany #14 macplash, Feb 7, 2020 @PandaArcade well, I appreciate you reaching out and responding to what I wrote. I understand this kind of free to play model is highly popular in general. And I’m not going to name everything I hate about it and why. It’d take me hours. Just let me say this. I spent over a year playing Clash Royale. Obsessively. Daily. In retrospect I almost ran my entire life around it. Going to sleep only when there was a chest unlocking for 8 hours, no less. Being up always to 2 am because that’s when shop refreshed for me. Watching YouTube videos and getting familiar with meta and different strategies every day. Up to the point I started to realize there are patterns and algorithms to everything that is happening in-game. Winning and losing streaks, chest cycles, matchmaking, counter decks and whatnot. I know the developers love to point out all IAPs are optional. When in reality you can never compete against those on top spending (tens of) thousands of dollars to have everything. And these games are pretty much all about it. Focusing on whales, which is like 1-2% of all their player base? But it easily covers the cost of development and allows the rest to play for free entirely. Sure, never on the highest possible level, restricting them by waiting because of timers and gacha and all that shit. My point is, the day I left that Clash Royale train was the best day of my gaming life. The sudden freedom, the serenity. And I will never ever play this kind of game again. It represents everything I hate in modern gaming. I’m all pro premium. Hell, sometimes I’m buying games I’m not even planning to play just to support the developer for choosing the premium way. I can go on and on for hours about free to play vs premium. But! I understand it from the developer’s point of view. Of course I do! And it obviously works, I get it. Luckily for me, I get to choose what I’m gonna play and what I’ll never touch just out of principle. And the best thing is I get to give my honest opinion on it. I participate in multiple beta projects giving feedback, comments and constructive criticism. Even on free to play ones. Because you can make free to play model right as well. It’s possible. It’s even easy if you think about it. Sure, some compromises are required, but it’s doable if there’s a will. You asked me what would my ideal free to play model be. Well, thinking about it and probably the reason I came out a little bit harsh about your game in the first place is energy system. The moment there’s energy system introduced in game, it’s dead to me. It’s the stupidest idea ever implemented in a gaming industry if you ask me. To restrict players from playing whenever they want? Who’d have thought of that? That’s why I will always go for premium kind of game like Grid Autosport over energy restricted crap like Asphalt or RR3. So, to answer your question: first of all - I would get rid of energy system. Everything’s manageable from there. I despise advertisements. So getting rid of those is a next step. If the game’s worth it I don’t mind some grinding. If it keeps me entertained, I’m okay with that. I can go for coin doubler IAP on occasions (like Sky Force series etc) especially if it’s the only way to support the developer. And last but not least, I’m fine with F2P games with single IAP to remove ads or games with e.g. first chapter free and the rest of the game locked behind the single IAP. These are making them full premium experience after all. But if you once go “full clash royale way”, you can’t make it any better or more accessible (for me), it’s just ruined. I had a blast with Pico Tanks during the beta. Hence my praise about it in upcoming games category. I guess I left the beta before the free to play elements were introduced as you mentioned it in your post. I just got busy with other beta projects and matchmaking was the main issue for me to stay interested during the whole process. After all I mentioned that multiple times on your Discord channel being located in Europe and hence being able to play with you only at 6 or 7 am if I remember correctly. So, yeah. Don’t know what to say more on the matter. If there was no energy system in your game, I might’ve give it a shot further. I probably wouldn’t stick with it anyway because of the timers and chests and multiple currencies and whatnot. But at least I wouldn’t be disappointed as much as I originally was. Of course I didn’t expect fully premium experience. But I wouldn’t imagine you slap the energy system on it even in my wildest dreams. As I said in my previous post, I wouldn’t dare to criticize that much and voice my disappointment so harshly if I wasn’t invested in Beta for such a long time and realized I’ve been playing completely different game that whole time. Despite all the criticism and whatnot I’d like to give this response a proper closure. Even on a positive note perhaps. I just don’t know what else to say. I’m just being honest about my disappointment. But what does it matter, right? I’m just that one guy when there are potentially millions of satisfied players yet about to try the Pico Tanks and love it. So, take my opinion with a grain of salt and don’t let it ruin your day. Peace. stubbieoz likes this. MetaGonzo Well-Known Member May 7, 2009 1,459 271 83 #15 MetaGonzo, Feb 7, 2020 With that in your history I’m not surprised you’re anti the ftp model! Good on you for quitting that, sounds toxic. The only response I’d have to that (and obviously I’m just a player here) is that the energy system doesn’t stop you playing or progressing. If you play without crate keys (which you can do as much as you like) then you’re still earning coins and unlocking your mission chest. It’s still very much worth your time and it’s fun, providing you already enjoy the game itself of course. ste86uk likes this. But this like Brawl Stars for me I find both fun and enjoy my time on them and as you said you can play as much as you want still even with the energy. I actually think the energy makes the game fair it stops someone that just plays the game 24/7 demolishing a casual player because they can’t just grind it out and get to top. What’s your favourite weapon so far? I’m really liking the homing rocket although I’ve got so many yet to unlock. But shooting around the corner and the distance on it is very handy and has got me some sneaky kills. It’s just so slow and bad close range to make up for that. MetaGonzo likes this. MetaGonzo Well-Known Member May 7, 2009 1,459 271 83 #18 MetaGonzo, Feb 10, 2020 I have to say that once you get the knack of avoiding the seeker it’s pretty rare to fall victim to it. I was heavily invested in the Helix but that’s just received a hefty nerf so I’m sort of “between guns” at the moment. My Medic is fairly high level so I’ve got that to work on and I’m going to give the viper a go. The Cannon itself is a very solid proposition at the moment. At level 20 it apparently does c1800 damage per shot with a 3 round clip. Hard to beat that if they all land unless you’re in a mammoth (or shielded, obvs). It’s just not a very “fun” gun in my eyes but it is effective; seeing a lot of them now. I think (hope) the repair arc gets some adjustment; 2 (or 3!) of those on the opposing team and it’s basically a foregone conclusion. Even if you keep your distance if they stay grouped they’re just too tough. ste86uk likes this. MetaGonzo Well-Known Member May 7, 2009 1,459 271 83 #19 MetaGonzo, Feb 10, 2020 You've got me there. The helix nerfs did suck I did write to them asking if we would be refunded our investment with its rarity reduction I’ve wasted at least a thousand on it probably when it costs less now to build. Still working on getting the medic and so far I find the repair arc useless as I’m just playing with a team of randoms all the time and half the time those are morons that just drive straight into the enemy and actively seem to avoid picking up a repair kit! The cannon is a strong choice I still like that, although cheap it’s probably the best ambush weapon I have if I hide in a bush then unload the clip. Edit: well obviously the shotgun is the best for a close ambush but I’m not keen on it yet as I don't like being bad at range. MetaGonzo likes this. (You must log in or sign up to post here.) It’s still very much worth your time and it’s fun, providing you already enjoy the game itself of course.
I agree I’ve been tied to games in the past feeling like I have to play it because of a timer etc and that really isn’t what anyone wants and it isn’t very healthy at all.
I have to say that once you get the knack of avoiding the seeker it’s pretty rare to fall victim to it.
You've got me there. I’m sure someone on the discord will be able to help you. https://discordapp.com/invite/wJNTbu
Yeh I can believe that, I’ve started finding some movement patterns that just make people miss me a lot because they can’t predict as well where I’m going to move and the seeker is extremely slow.
