I think a joystick/D-pad would be the best. I don't think there should be a forced choice at the beginning though since players haven't gotten to try out the tilt controls yet. It should be in the options menu from the pause menu and main menu to choose between either choice. Maybe there could be a pop-up at the beginning saying something like "Or alternatively you can change the controls to a D-pad in the options menu if you wish."
there's an orange dot at the preview video, i thought that was a touch control scheme. can you make a touch control scheme? see the game "Spirit", the touch control is relative, or maybe just touch where you want the beaver to go,like "I Dig It Expeditions", and remove the joystick. a virtual dpad would also be nice, just make sure it doesn't get in the way, see the game "Zenonia 2" the virtual d-pad is fully customizable
