Yes, I would like to see it as a 99 cent option, if it worked right, I would gladly pay extra for that. Maybe a trial where it let you play for a minute free in that mode or something. Do it! Then it would feel more like a bullet hell which I enjoy.
Great game analysis and I completely agree with the things you say. And yeah, somehow that old thread did get bumped and even I didn't realize it. Anyway, guess I'd still love to see a stage based game with all of the mechanics you mention above. Hell, a story/stage based game with an unlockable endless mode would be even better. I do realize that endless does give people more replay value. I'm by no means an expert shump player so in a lot of the stage based games the replay value comes from trying to beat higher levels of difficulty. But I like the epic feel feel of story/stage based games like Sine Mora (won't go there for arguments over how well it was ported) and all the Cave games. I dunno. I'm sure I'm in the minority on that. Again, I didn't by any means want to take away from this game as I definately know it's an impeccably designed game with excellent gameplay.
Ah awp, I replied in the old thread to your post as well. The short of it: I don't expect our next shmup to have a story mode though it will be a bit different than Phoenix HD currently is. Who knows, Flare Elite 2 might come some day
Could someone double-check that Phoenix HD on the TA app links to this thread now? As requested, I've closed down the other thread, removed all apparent links to Phoenix HD from it and left a message in both the opening and closing posts, linking to this thread.
I know this two thread thing is getting confusing! Hehe. I was trying to post my picture in both threads, ended up posting twice in the same thread instead of both, and now I don't even remember which thread it was in. Anyway, cool game, like the new ships. Coolness. Yes, Flare Elite 2 with full joystick support would be awesome!!! Edit: that is kinda funny, thanks metalcasket http://forums.toucharcade.com/showpost.php?p=2932952&postcount=686
Thanks for closing the old thread! In the TouchArcade App it now seems to link to this thread: http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=99986 And the title changes to Frisbee(r) Forever 2, when you browse the forum and scroll up and down
Hey, no problem! Yeah, I checked a second ago and have been trying to get rid of any trace of Phoenix HD's appinfo from that thread. It doesn't seem to be working. What a mess. :/ I'm still at it. Guys, PLEASE DO NOT POST APPINFO ANYWHERE OTHER THAN RELEASE THREADS & IN THE PRICE-DROP SECTION. IF YOU POST THE APPINFO IN THE PRICE-DROP SECTION, MAKE SURE THE GAME ALREADY HAS A THREAD IN THE RELEASE SECTION. EDIT: Found the appinfo posted inside the pages of that thread. They're gone now, but the link is still ****ed up. I'm gonna wait for half an hour and see if anything changes. If not, I'll make a thread in the Site Feedback section.
SumoSplash, what the heck happened to your post? Anyway, I agree with you that in general horizontal shmups do tend to give a greater sense of immersion. Although some Cave games do an especially good job with 3D backgrounds, the fact that vertical shmups tend to be slower does allow you to fully appreciate them. Besides the classics you mentioned, two of my favorite iOS shmups are Darius Burst SP and Syder Arcade (and, of course, the hotly debated Sine Mora). Sorry for derailing the thread a little and Selachii, appreciate your response as well. Story mode or not I'll surely be all over your next game as well. EDIT: Sumo, also was wondering if you had tried Abyss Attack. Not bullet hell, but fun and atmospheric shmup if you can deal with the pricing structure.
Yeah, I figured you didn't realize that you were responding to the old Phoenix thread either, after the fact, LOL, which of course then confused me even more and made me think I was responding to an old post from you. Then I looked at the date of the post and saw that it was from last night and was like, what the fu<k is going on here? That was pretty funny. Yes, Phoenix HD with the current, endless mode as well as a campaign mode with boards and bosses together in the same game would probably be the greatest vertical shooter of all time. Heck, I think a campaign mode and an endless mode works well with just about every game. The key word in my last sentence is vertical. It is important to make a distinction between vertical and horizontal shooters. I get the greatest sense of immersion from a slower paced, horizontal shooter than I do from any vertical shooter. One of the biggest reasons for this is the depth that is achieved with the backgrounds, while vertical shooters appear as being on more of a flat plane. In fact, the shooters that I consider the best ever are all horizontal: G-Darius, R-Type Final/Delta and Einhander. If I get the chance to ever play the console version of Sine Mora, I'd probably throw that one in the mix too, but with a asterisk due to the loss of power ups that float away from your ship after taking damage that subsequently forces you to take more damage in the retrieval process So yeah, point being that you are not alone with the board/boss/shooter love
For iPhone/iPad I definitely prefer vertical / portrait mode. It feels much more natural as 'going forward', makes no difference for left/right handed people and does not play on cultural habits (reading from left to right in the western world as opposed to right to left in some asian countries). The concept of gravity is also much stronger in horizontal orientation, maybe that's why most are in space anyway, to avoid those issues That said, horizontal lends itself much better for big screen/tv play as it uses all of the screen, instead of a narrow band.
Good points there. Gravity... Yeah, horizontals definitely have a weightier feel. Is that what you mean? Oh, and in terms of a vertical shooter on iOS that uses depth well that I forgot about is AirAttack HD. You shoot forward while also using bombs to take out targets below you. Of course this has been done a million times before, but it is seamless in this game. You really interact with what's below and in front of you.
El I am just about at 150,000 coins. When I reach 200,000 can I exchange my virtual currency for a t-shirt or something? The shirt could say Firi with various pics of the ships in action. When you autograph it for me, make sure it says 'Firi's Biggest Fan' and make sure Tijmen signs it properly as Tijmen the Invisible, for authenticity.
Hehe, look at my Sine Mora shots really closely in the hdmi thread. Yeah, send me one too one day. I will use it as my icade cover.
Hmmm. I am worried about the lack of power-ups for the last three ships as compared to the first three. The Shogun has none, the Trinity has around five and the Phantom has around four, but the Phoenix, Corsair and Mirage all have a lot, I'd say around eight. I think the next ship should have THIRTY to make up for this deficit
Looks good Connector Sine Mora looks ok as well, might actually try it. We have no plans to move into the 3d or 2.5d space anytime soon btw. Phoenix HD has plenty room for improvement graphics wise. We're also tweaking the UI a bit for the upcoming iOS7 support patch. @sumo: Correct, we do not have a fixed amount of weapon upgrades for all ships. To be honest, the weapon upgrades are mostly a cosmetic thing. With later ships we chose to spend our time in other places
