Should The Police Carry Guns? By Dylan Johnson


So you think police should not carry guns? Think about all the times the day has been saved by a cop that had to use his least means and shoot the criminal. While rarely a policeman does something wrong or abuses his power, they still usually do what’s right.

Though once in a while a policeman will do something that will risk or kill a person while handling a gun, usually they use it to protect us, and save us in the worst of situations.

Don’t you think police should be able to defend themselves when another criminal is armed? What are they supposed to use? Harsh language? Usually the criminals have guns and without a gun you can’t do anything about it. You don't bring a knife to gunfight. When the criminals have range on their side the police can’t win. They can’t do much with a gun to their head. Bur they would not have gotten into a situation like that if they had their own gun. They die to protect us, shouldn’t they get a gun?

2009 was at a peak with all of the policemen killed by gunfire with a stunning 49 deaths. Imagine how many there would be without guns. It would double or triple this amount easily. We are talking about police officers, but lets take a moment to think about the war victims killed by gunfire. In world war 1 approximately 116,000 American army men and women were killed. It’s because the enemy always caries a gun.

Many articles and stories I have seen have very heartbreaking articles of innocent policemen off the job being killed. They are defenseless, just like us without a gun. When cops are unarmed, they get hurt and killed when they are unarmed. This is horrible, because if they had a gun, they could still have been here today, alive. This brings up another point…. if policemen can carry guns to protect themselves and us, why can’t we do the same?

So, my partner says that police shouldn’t have guns. Cool idea. How many police would die every year because of this? Sure, some people die from angry, or crazy cops, but mainly more deaths are because of policemen being shot down. So what should they use Gavin? Harsh words? When your life is on the line, you need to use all means necessary.

Again, with all these people being killed while unarmed…. some were in battle, some weren’t. But imagine every policeman being unarmed with no authority at all? Okay, fine. Take away all the guns that the police have. We will see how we do. Who knows? Maybe we will do fine, but evidence shows that no good would come of this.

So this concludes why guns should be armed. Without the authority of the gun, the criminals will have no fear and city’s and people will get hurt and destroyed. What good will come of this. No good. So I will say once more… police should carry guns.
