It begins. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/18/technology/18phone.html?_r=2&ref=technology Day one purchase. I'll keep or upgrade the iTouch I already have for games, and get the Pre to have a great multitasking phone with a keyboard.
Hmmmm i guess you could slim it down by running it over with a car and then you could call it an iPhone.... a broken one. Look at it this way, Apple, huge company, palm, semi-huge company, more people know Apple, Apple has the appstore which is easy to use and easy to develope. There is no chance that the Pre is even compared to the iPhone, for now there is nothing that can. Unless your looking to buy a phone for a video camera or a camer, in which then, you buy a video camera or a camera WOW! iPhone ftw....ftl for Pre
I bought an ipod touch because I have a phone I don't use and I hate the trend of pressing a camera in every piece these days. I don't need million things with cameras. If I want to take photos I use my dslr and for snapshots of things, it may be useful. But I would have preferred the iphone without a camera. Thats why I got an ipod. I'm happy.
Like the other posts said, I don't want all my junk in one device. I have my touch, my LG enV2, a camera that I can... well, borrow (I don't take that many pics), and my computer. My touch has music, movies, games, pretty much all I need when I'm bored. Cell for texting, calling, camera's for pics that I wanna take just for fun, or when now's the only time I can take them (y'know those, hilarious friend moments). Camera, if I need it, great looking shots. Computer, can't really replace a computer with anything else unless all you want is a web browser. If I have everything on one device, it's gonna drain the battery like a b****. The gadget is gonna be fragile if it has 100 capabilities, and if I lose it, I'm screwed. Now the Palm Pre, while it's cool, there're two things that made the iPhone succesful that they can't emulate. 1) AppStore. Now chance, no can, no how. It's huge, everyone knows Apple, too late. 2) The interface's sexiness and usability. 'Nuff said.
Release date has been announced by Sprint. It'll be out June 6th. http://www.infosyncworld.com/news/n/10282.html I'm excited, I'm definitely getting it, since I'm already Sprint.
Too little too late locked on to a ridiculous network, typical Palm. I keep wondering what the final nail in their coffin is going to be, they just refuse to die. In other words, from the other Pre thread-
To each his own Hodapp. I don't see how you can hate it when it has so many features and it's not even out yet.
I'm changing the title since it's past the first week of May And the date was announced as June 6th. So just so nobody gets confused and thinks this is a different thread...You've been warned
One thing that I suppose developers should be interested in as far as the Pre is concerned is that it apparently uses PowerVR's SGX GPU, and, since iTouch/Phone currently uses an MBX-lite, chances are that when Apple gets around to a major hardware update (true next gen iTouch/Phone hardware) in 2-3 years (most probable timeline) they'll use that GPU.
I plan on switching over to the Pre. I'm just really bored of my iPhone, and the Pre's UI makes the iPhones look dated. The Pre does more, has it's own app store, and is easier to develop for than the iPhone. They also promised an easier review process, and their SDK is free. Plus actual background apps, and the battery life is reportedly better than the iPhone. People were getting 1.5 days out of it, where I still need to charge my iPhone every night. The phone is thicker than the iPhone, but I really like the way it looks, and I'd take a slightly thicker phone with a physical keyboard any day. Especially as someone who is more of a messaging person, I love the synergy stuff. Integrated facebook, AIM, and cloud syncing is awesome. You may not like the phone, but the WebOS is really amazing. Most hands on previews of the OS have stated that it makes the iPhone OS feel dated. And while I know this is an iPhone website so I'm sure most of you are biased, you have to at least give some credit to Palm. They've really showed up, and may actually give Apple some decent competition. Competition is great for everybody because it means us as consumers win because they're fighting over us. Of course I'll waiting until after the Apple annoucements before I buy the Pre, but with the way it's going now I am definetely picking one up. I've been using beta 3.0 OS since beta 1 and it's not enough for me to stick with it.
They definetely may change haha. That's why I'm waiting until after the 8th before I make my decision. But it would have to be a pretty drastic change for me to stick with the iPhone. Adding a better camera and more memory isn't going to be enough for me. But I would love it if Apple did surprise me.
wow, everyone seems to not like the palm, its not even out and your already sure u like your iphones? IDK im sure one of my friends will get it and i will try it, it doesnt look bad
I had a chance to check out a pre-release out here in SF, and I have to say despite all the negativity towards Palm, the Pre looks and feels really good. I know the iPhone has its fan base, but the Pre is definitely a nice piece of equipment in its on right. Whatever you may think of Palm, I think the Pre will surprise many people.
Have four palm devices sitting in a box. Good riddance. Yes I'm glad their coming out with it for competition. Hopefully give a shot up apple's rear to give us better battery life but I ain't holding my breath.
