I love me some Aralon that's for sure. But it is in no way a perfect game. But one of the best portable open world western RPG's I have yet to play in long time, almost ever. It's fantastic. Has a ways to go in terms of perfection but the time I have spent with the game is undoubtably one of the more fun time I have had in iOS gaming. Mirror's Edge get's my vote for most overrated. Hated it on consoles, hated it on iOS (friend has it on his iPod, gave it a try, wanted to cut off my fingers)
all three were great in my opinion...better, in fact that aralon (well maybe not reckless racing). People think differently, and have different tastes, thats all.
There's no way we could have posted the story today about the forum poll without this thread. Also, when we post our TouchArcade game of the year post, I can almost guarantee there will be a similar thread for that. Maybe I should just start it myself.
Completely agreed. It's obviously opinionated no matter how you look at it. I personally think Aralon was well deserved for the reasoning givin but thats my opinion. I seriously wish people would understand that and not get so worked up on a $7 game... Voted.
I meant the game is overrated (or overvalued, if you want to make a completely lateral choice of word) by the good folks here at TA. I'm not concerned with professional criticism; I posted here because the popular opinion at TA is Aralon for GotY, which simply vexes me. And nope, not saying people shouldn't like a game as much as they happen to like a game. If Aralon wasn't the TA forum's choice for GotY, I wouldn't have started this thread. I own and enjoy playing Aralon. Aralon does absolutely nothing different in terms of the western RPG, and it plays exactly like it would if it were made for the PC. I believe neither of those complaints could be levied at Infinity Blade, for an easy example. And GotY, especially as awarded by hardcore iOS users with an interest in seeing the platform flourish, should be bestowed upon a game more fit for the device on which it's played. That's just my opinion, and it's more objective than you would think. I love the disagreements; it doesn't matter to me a bit if anyone agrees with my GotY choice of IB. I may be in the minority here, but not within the gaming world at large. My language in the OP was too harsh. But is it self-centered to ask TA, a community to which I respect and belong, what makes a game deserving? Most obviously not. Thanks to those who offered an answer.
You know what? Screw this whole game of the year nonsense. I have my own preference for what I think is game of the year, so why should I listen to what others say? If you can convince yourself that your games are incredible and the games that you don't like are bad, then why ask for what other people think? For example, I think Aralon is boring, Infinity Blade is fun, Real Racing 2 has lots of depth and lots of replayability, and I think my favorite game this year is NOVA 2. But ask yourself this: Are these recent games GOTY or game of the holiday season?
True, a lot of games come out near the end of the year and end up having a much bigger impact going into the following year, like Angry Birds. AB is really a game of 2010 IMO, though it came out in '09. And yes, this is all just opinionated bickering to an extent, but many folks like myself believe that GotY should mean something more than just "this game is FTMFW!!1! You suck if you don't like it!" Lol. GotY should go to a game that is not only great, but one that is tailored to its platform, and one that has a greater impact on the community if possible. As much as I think Angry Birds is 'meh', it fits this bill nicely. So there is some criteria to be met IMO, not just fickle opinion.
Some of the games unfortunately have very bad timing when it comes to deadlines for awards. It is when it is released that counts not when it makes the most impact - who knows what games that were under the radar and overshadowed by some of the "big" releases the last month might make the most long lasting impact for next year. It is the same with lots of things - Academy Awards come to mind - a movie is released in selected cities just to be released in time for that year's awards. Producers are afraid that if they wait longer the movie will be forgotten by the time the next year rolls around. Now of course Academy Awards have a much greater impact on movies, actors, etc than any Game of the Year would but I hope you see my point. Timing is of the essence and you have to go with some guidelines or else you can make a case for just about anything to be eligible.
Well, I am open to this: I may like a game few people like or I do not like one which many find interesting. Taste differs but I do not have the time to judge them. One example: Angry Birds... I simply don't care who gets GotY as there are far too many different "organisations" giving out their "awards" for me to track every one of them. Well, I think I should spend more time playing games, not the forums. (see my sig)
Infinity Blade is the most overrated. It takes less than half an hour to play through the entire thing, the control system is clunky and sometimes unresponsive, the camera angles are the hardest part of the whole game, and the story is nowhere near complex. Angry Birds is another- seriously, guys? It's just a cute, family friendly version of Crush the Castle.
How would you feel if someone called your upcoming game a piece of shit? You work in the same field and yet you crap on other devs. So unprofessional of you I might say. IB is awesome and the MP update will sweeten the deal.
Aralon is overrated. It doesnt deserve to be the top iphone game of the year or whatever that post on the front page is talking about. Aralon is just an offline clone of World of Warcraft with a crappy story about your father. I played as all races and the story/missions seems like its gonna be the same. Your in your little house and some stranger comes out of nowhere in your house talking about your "dead" father. The game is OVER *******RATED. Im 100% positive that if the Crex guy had put some newer most anticipated games(Gameloft for example), they would have been high ranked then Aralon,
Personally I loved the game. And you can't blame the hype, I mean look at the graphics and the features that were promised. Kind of hard not to get excited about that. As for the story, yes it could use some work, but you can't judge a game just by it's story, you spend most of the time completing side quests anyway. But anyways, that is also just my opinion, this thread is kind of stupid cause all people are going to do is argue about which games were good or not.
