This game really started boring me. I played a dozen games and it's always the same. I visit around 6-8 star systems, then one of the main ressources (mostly Iron or Oxygen, sometimes fuel) depletes and the game is over. Even when a ressource is down to 60-80% and I start looking for more, there's strangely nothing found to restock it. I tried different approches and strategies, but had no success. The game is also far too random in terms of events. Some bad design decisions, as just putting a bad event in front of your face without a chance to change or influence the outcome, making the experience more frustrating. Game deleted.
IMO you need the technology to get your fuel from stars instead of gas giants. But in five to six games I got it only once and then not as a technology I could reproduce but installed on a rather crappy ship. To make it though you'll also need a good resistance... You'll get the point. The enemies are not stationed on all gas giants but again you'll need to be extremely lucky to hop from system to system without the mentioned technology. There are some strategies to help you go through the game but you need to be lucky as hell as well to make it to one of the endings.
I like the randomness and how it forces you to manage resources and weight risk. I've managed to advance enough and recieve one of the endings but to get to that point required a quick sprint to the finish. What I really hate is that on some playthroughs, when I've accumulated a lot of resources and want to explore for more tech, it's like the game sees this and derails my progress with this one event. The sudden difficulty spike is so obnoxious that it undermines the perfect balance that was established early on.
Ugh should have thought of that. I actually had the harvest and shield tech in place on my last playthrough. Thanks though!
My troubles with this have came from me having the tech ready to build and forgetting to build it, instead using the iron for hulk repairs and then going "doh" I needed that for my tech All in all I've only played about 6 games so far but I like the randomness to keep you coming back.
Enemy is a pain in the neck...when one gets into bad luck, game ends pretty quick. I dunno how the score is calculated. In one game, I visit 3 system and get more than 8K. I get fewer marks by going through much more... For the use of black holes, once you get the wormhole generator, you can travel between black holes with this device without any use of fuel.
Did you have ALL the words translated? Couldn't they have been saying "give US iron, we give YOU omega"?
Yeah, I hear you; it is irritating, but I am taking it in stride because I think it fits the general theme of the game. It's you against the universe, and there will be things like asteroids and iron worms and the like that you just have to weather if you are to survive.
Woah, just WOAH. I started an Out There game...why not? Usually one game take me about 20 minutes. One solid hour later I can say: WOAH. I didn't nor complete any ending nor made my top score but I managed to visit over 50 systems (a ton of dead ends too But WOAH SPOILER Spoiler I found all 3 endings...and was warped AT THE VERY BEGINNING 3 systems away from both red and green...how dumb of me...HOW COULD I NOT PRESS THAT BUTTON.... ANYWAY...Found THE ENEMY and since then many systems were occupied...I guess I must have the death seed or something. Simply awesome. The 'birdlike' starship is incredible...basically free fuel...if only I could had it upgraded with shields and better engines!!!! My biggest problem now is that it will take me ages to reach that point again!!!! I really didn't think this game could be so great...it's a pity a lot people IMHO, scared by initial difficulty, maybe won't ever see those things if not very lucky.
Arghhh! My best game so far, finally though I'd cracked it, and now it looks like I'm screwed. I've gone through 80+ star systems, learned more technology than I ever think I could fit on a single ship (10 over the starting ones) and then boom, my interplanetary reactor destroys itself. No problem I think, I have plenty of iron in reserve to build another. I go to build it and remember that that was the Spoiler technology stolen by "the enemy" . Now I'm flying around in the desperate hope that a random event will give me the tech I need to build another, using up my Omega reserves in a last ditch attempt to survive. The most painful thing is that I keep passing abandoned ships that I just can't reach. I've gone past the blue arrow system now, and can say that Spoiler when I go back there I'll be sure I have the death seed installed, I don't think there's anything you can do there without it. Very very frustrating way to end my most successful game yet, I suspect It's going to be over shortly, I'm on my last 4 Omega reserves. EDIT: Made it to the red ending Spoiler and there's nothing I can do there! Last 2 Omega now... and I'm dead. Here's a list of technology I collected for anyone who wants to spoil it. Spoiler Gravitational Lens - Telescope upgrade Solar Sails - Use less fuel Gravitational Sails - Use less fuel Shield Generator - Reduced damage Tau Stasis - Increase range Shared Cryonics - Reduced resource consumption Life Seed - Terraform planets Geo Scan - Scan for planets resources in orbit Wormhole Generator - Turns blackholes into wormholes Ansible - Detects enemy fleets in starsystems
I really hope the typos get fixed. It's kind of annoying that the scan button shows up when you don't have a scanner. The other thing I'd like to see is more variety when landing on planets, rather than the same background all the time. Great game so far though, and I'm enjoying it overall.
Finally managed to finish game and boy it was tough and long space travel. To my surprise, I didn't find any of bigger ships in successful run even though I explored a lot. There was at least 5 close calls I had luck with and I finished game with literally zero oxygen ( last jump before end wasted it all, I was like ). I didn't use much fancy technology simply because , as said, I had smaller ship and no room to apply all bonuses and stash resources for emergency repairs at same time. Looking forward to another run with bigger ship this time
Just reached the green ending, man that was unexpected but awesome. And I did it by pure luck: I found a ship that could travel so fast, it range was huge (the one in surrounded by a blue halo on the picture) and that saved me because even without fuel or the hydrogen probe (I sold it by mistake lol) I could reach it easily. I could go on, but with those issues and the inability to drill energy, I left it there... now to the red and blue ending. I absolutely love this game so much. Edit: Didn't see the Omega until now, I dont distinguish them that good. Oh well.
By finishing the game you mean all of the 3 ends You lucky bastard, I saw the blue end and could even go there but my fuel was empty
Nice game but a few quick suggestions: - disable buttons that cannot be used such as "scan" until they are relevant. - alien words you learn should carry over to a new play through, that would give the game a nice sense of progression, and that you're not starting from scratch each time. I always like when rougelikes do this. Writing them on paper is so 80s.
With the success so far of Out There, I am super excited to finally have some free time to play it this weekend. I just want to suggest one thing. PLEASE write to the BBC and tell them about this game in order to convince them to hire you to reskin this for their show Red Dwarf. This game is awesome, but would great for fans of that show. Plus, it would add a lot of humor to it. But if you've never heard of the show before, nevermind.
Excellent game - innovative concept, easy to dip in to, simple to get to grips with but with enough complexity to keep it interesting. Would have paid double. Enjoy.
Anyone got to red end? I completed green and blue the one after u encounter the aggressive aliens... I think I missing some technology to complete it.. I have played couple of time same ending couldn't get to red.. Either ran out of rss or got teleported to a place where u can't travel anymore...
Are the words that important? I couldn't care what that say that are always two outcome either they like what u give or they don't even wanna talk to you... If they like u u get an omega.. The only use I have for omega is when I terraform an entire planet.. But I don't see that help u in anyway
