I wanted to like this, but even for a rouguelike it's just too random to be any fun past the discovery of the first 20 minutes or so of content. One run, my first move broke my transport and I had no ore to fix it. One move. At first I was all precious about it like oh isn't it interesting the little scenarios, but when it's clear they weren't programmed with any semblance of cohesion whatsoever, I just resent them because it's all there is to feel. The initial goal is a few dozen hops away, and because the scenarios are _completely_ arbitrary, they have created a game where success' odds are _literally_ astronomically low. I doubt the irony was intended. I'm game for some rouguelike buildup with random death, but this...*shaking head*
Is it really that difficult of a game? I won my first game outside of the tutorial. It just seemed to be a matter of maintaining proper fuel supply primarily, with metal/oxygen secondarily. It got a bit close a few times, but for the most part it was a numbers game. The ships you find appear to be based on distance traveled. Certain ships appear after certain distances.
Sorry I really do not get the problem, cause I have read enough and the game is what I expected. I don't see complaints about randomness on Shift, Adventures in Infinite Space and FTL, but why this one?
Procedural generation is not only about "randomness", it's about the checks and balances in the algorithm that ensure the result gives good gameplay. To be honest, I find this game "novel", but underwhelming - it's just not enough fun to keep me coming back.
To me, most of the unexpected events feel like minor inconveniences. The greater game has a predictable pattern of planets and ships for all your resource needs.
It is just me, I do not enjoy Shift much, but SAIIS is fun, and so is this one. I spent the lunch time and get this: I give up when I run out of Fe fixing the drive... I am pretty aware that this one is eating up on my Ascension game time (which is very random also) P.S. I encounter some what resemble the monolith in 2001:ASO (no spoiler here), and seems like there is more chance of ship encounter in "bigger" stars. Is this true?
I am quite enjoying this one. It even kept me always from my playstation for a day. Probably because I am rather bad at it,
There's a much bigger encounter resulting from the monolith (good 2001 reference), but it's not a ship.
Every other post is about FTL. I understand, but can any game be rated under its own merits these days?
More often than not, my games are ending because I get warped off to some star which is isolated away from the other stars so that I'm essentially stuck. I might be able to warp to one or two other nearby stars, but there are no stars within range of that little cluster of stars that would give me a path to the goal. So then, it's a countdown trying to explore all the reachable planets and stars to see if I can just happen upon something that increases my jump range, which of course doesn't happen. This is how my last three runs have ended, so it seems like it's not an uncommon occurrence. This seems like a bit of a game design flaw to me. Not even the most brutal of rogue likes will randomly drop you into a room with no exits. And it's a pretty depressing way to end the game when you have, say, the orb ship decked out with a lot of resources and upgrades. Still, game is quite fun and engaging. Still worth the price of admission.
I got that yesterday too. Force close the app and relaunch. It happened because of too many times exiting the app.
Argh, I nearly got to the green ending... NEARLY!!! But I got killed in the end. Another frustrated attempt at surviving "Out There"
Hello all, I just got the green ending didn't know it was an ending tho! Got 46k on that one great game and challenging.
I made it to the green mark. One ending. Finally!, last night, the stars aligned (hehe) and I got exceedingly lucky on tech, energy and shields. Two techs which extend range, I was jumping 3 planets at a time. Made it to the Red mark on the same turn as the aliens attack. But they wrecked me... It sent me on to the next goal, but I had no resources. It would have been REALLY great if the station at the red mark had refilled my resources There was no boon for making it there. Make it a special supply station, or even a super supply station topping the player off. Toss us a little bone Tough!
