To be perfectly honest (and I don't claim to be an expert at the game), I actually get all my best scores by creating loads of tiny orbs, then get some insane chain reactions out of them... pinball bumper effect.
But then one wrong move trying to create those tiny orbs and you are screwed, especially in Pure mode. There's hundreds of games with multipliers and fancy combo graphics, I think it's nice to play a old school kind of game where the gameplay is very pure (pun intended )
Oh I agree, I just don't think the addition of x2 for hitting two at once would be enough to spoil that. I love the simplicity of the game, we just seem to have different views on how far you can go keeping it simple.
True, having said that I wouldn't be averse to your earlier idea of orbs destroyed and score. Could even make them two separate game modes and have a leader board for each as you say.
You know, nearly every game in the appstore seems to use the word "addictive" somewhere in the description. Orbital is the rare case where it's actually true.
that is how i start my games. i start by putting a bunch of small balls in the upper right and left corners, gradually the balls get bigger as i make my way down. i try to pop them and fill up the space at the same time. that's with gravity. on pure mode i just try to keep the balls high and pop as quick as i can. how do you play? what strategies are you using for the modes?
gotta score of 19 in pure for #14 all-time ranking, #4 past 24 hrs. anyone from this thread have better than this? gravity is 34pts for #160 all-time, #84 past 24
I set up a shield wall of small dots, near the top, and then bounce other dots around and behind it. Strays hit the wall, which is a good thing.
I've tried for ages today to beat my 29 Pure score and can't come anyway near it. Yesterday I got into the 20's half a dozen times. I am getting worse at this game I do think I may be trying to be too tactical rather than just going for it which I did yesterday when I just got the game, so tomorrow I'm going back to reckless shots which will either succeed spectacularly or fail miserably
LOL, I was going to pose the question, whether or not people get near their top score often; now I don't have to. I'm lucky if I even get half way to my top score, in a typical game. Seems pretty luck-driven, but maybe we just suck. What about the guy that got like 29 on his second game? He should be up to about 250 by now, right?
I think he still gets 0 sometimes, over 10 most of the time, and over 20 occasionally. That 30 is looking a long way off. Or so I heard
jayisgames.com, the site that crowned Gimme Friction Baby's success, posted a review of Orbital: http://jayisgames.com/archives/2009/08/orbital.php
I intend to get there. I just got the #2 score with 96. I'm seriously addicted to this game and have been reading this thread but have been too busy playing to contribute. Just a few ideas though if nothing gets changed or updated I really won't care. If I paid 25 cents a pop, let's say I would have easily gone over $15 so far... I get the whole purity of the scoring system but what if a double hit gets a bonus point, a triple hit gets 2 bonus points and so on. Or a single bonus point with a triple hit or quadruple hit and 2 extra points for a wah wah wee wah 5 in a row or more. Some reward for the multiple hits would be nice. Gameplay wise, the simplicity is great. How bout an advanced mode where we choose the angle (no rotating turret) and have 10 levels of power? This mode would need to be added to both the Gravity and Pure modes so we would have 4 modes and leaderboards. Prob won't happen but I'd play all of them and shoot for the top in each. -vv I do have an affinity for gravity based games with orbs vv-
Another strat I use in Gravity Mode is to pile up a glob of dots in the center and then bounce dots around all sides of the mass. It would never work in Pure Mode, though.
