That's still gonna eat through a 2gb or 4gb data plan pretty fast. Not saying it isn't cool to have, just saying most people will only use this with wifi, as data caps are so small, it just won't make sense to use this on anything but wifi. So the dreams of using this on your cell plan while on a long car trip are sweet and all, it isn't going to pan out so awesome uNless carriers start giving us more reasonable caps. A 90 min 512x384 stream is what 750megs, so 3 hours of gaming would put you close to the limit for the month.
Here is a review on the iPad version of OnLive. Not sounding so good as far as I am concerned. Also, I have tried their viewer that is currently available for free on the appstore...if that is any indication of the performance of their upcoming app, I will pass. http://www.thinkdigit.com/Apps/OnLive-for-iPad-Review_8139.html
This is nothing that hasn't been stated elsewhere....cool tech that is too dependent on a quality Internet connection.
Touch gen updated and clarified thier article: UPDATE: We have just received word directly from OnLive that the OnLive app for iPad will not allow for in-app purchases at all. Based on that fact I expect the app to go live any day now, and that the hold up is merely a result of a Christmas rush to approve apps.
The author Nigel wood says, he couldn't make in app purchases In the app directly, so why didn't he simply bring up Safari or another AppStore browser and make a purchase? I guess since he has the micro console and a computer, he chose those instead
Completely agree, and it is very forseeable this would deeply affect the app store games if this onlive app for iphone goes through. I know that Onlive does have very good promos. I picked up Homefront for 1 buck. So you know that people would just download the game from their PC and play it on their iphone. There is really no need for the App to include IAP's anyway. The question is.... will Apple allow Onlive to have an iphone app in the app store ? knowing full well gamers will do this. I hope so because if they don't allow it. Players will buy Android tablets and smartphones instead of updating their apple devices.
The viewer app is not a good indication of how good OnLive actually is. I don't know why but on the viewer everything looks 'smudgy'. I have the micro console and playing the games on their is almost indistinguishable to playing them on any other dedicated games console. It is seriously impressive stuff. If the iPad app can match the same quality of streaming/ responsiveness then it is going to be amazing. I think it is ridiculous to mark down the app because you are not on a good connection. Any kind of online gaming requires a decent stable connection. It's the same on Xbox and PS3. Fair enough, I am lucky enough to have BT Infinity and get an average 34mb connection, but I'm sure a 6-7mb will be more than adequate.
Don't get me wrong...I would LOVE for this to work as well as they claim it will. I would LOVE to have the option to play AAA PC games on my iPad 2. I am just skeptical as to how good this will look and play. I hope it will be released very soon so I can judge it for myself. I am still hoping...
I'm hoping it's been re-submitted and is being reviewed in the next 2 days. I saw in a Neogaf thread that App store submissions will be froze in 2 days. Not sure where that source came from, but hopefully we'll see it soon.
When this finally get released anyone gona hook it up to their tv to make their iphone/ipad essentially a console? I dont have an xbox or ps3 I do all my gaming on the pc eager to try it out. Something that would be awesome but have waaaay to much lag would be to have onlive stream to the tv through apple tv. That would be high tech awesome but way to much lag I'm guessing
Yeah I meant that's what I'll end up doing but the idea of using the apple tv seemed cool but impractical. Getting closer folks The OnLive App for iOS is Now Working on iPads Sort Of - http://onlivefans.com/news/the-onlive-app-for-ios-is-now-working-on-ipads-iphones-sort-of/5850/ Seems a little odd but progress!
Yeah that cake game worked with OnLive viewer. No lag or anything. I'm in Sweden, but this is initially gonna be US and UK only first tho?
Nope, the service can be used anywhere in the world though the app might be restricted to a certain appstore. A free itunes account should bypass that problem.
Still waiting for the iPhone app, yesterday I tried extensively the OnLive player on a Samsung Galaxy S. Results where nothing short of AMAZING, really impressed. Mind you, I already tried OnLive before (I'm in Italy, where it's not officially supported and I guess I was connecting to USA servers, or UK) in the very same net condition (a normal 4 Mbit ADSL) but results were varied on a PC. I also tried on a 20 Mbit network but results were the same. On the phone results were really amazing. I played in particular for about 30 minutes each (the trial time): Dirt 3 Lego Batman Lara Croft The Witcher Every game was visually impressive...the little screen size probably mask the artifacts because we noticed none except when other people started huge downloads over the network. On the contrary, visually it realy really crisp (like 'retina' optimized crisp). I capped the connection at 2 Mbit and results were still impressive if no one used the network. In particular Lara Croft felt like the exact iOS native one (I already finished it months ago), but with gorgeous graphics and lots of shaders+cutscenes. The Witcher was AMAZING to look at, but I didn't understood well the commands (tried the mouse one, it said it's not yet optimized); text was tiny obviously. Batman was gorgeous to look and to play. We noticed a peculiar thing...lag was completely non existent if NEAR the WiFi router. A couple of rooms away and it lags a lot. (We have at work 2 wifi extenders so coverage was never a problem). Strangely on a McDonald free WiFi where we tested the app, lag was non existent. We wanted to try L.A. Noir (optimized) but couldn't find it among the games. All said, there will be limitations....but OnLive really shines in a portable format where bandwith requirements are much lower than the PC counterpart...I'm eagerly waiting for the app and possibly buying some games. I was really impressed, much more than the PC client. Were we lucky? Will things lag a lot and video quality be a early 240 Youtube video on normal phone line? I do not know...but first impressions were nothing short of magical...I hope it will continue so. Apple should really buy OnLive (before Amazon does it and embed the app oin their cheap Kindle Fire).
I would rather see Valve/Steam buy up onlive. Being one of the largest online stores for PC games and with the addition of the mac platform it would seem to be a logical move and could really benefit both the companies and the end user. Anyways I'm starting to think that when the announcement was made they were implying that the game is finished and uploaded to the appstore/android market. If you didn't know the android marketplace has no approval system in place and apps or usually live within 15 minutes of submission. Apple on the other hand works much differently and may take a week or two. Either way I'm fairly confident it will pass the approval system the question is just how long that will take.. Hopefully by this week, that's my prediction.
I thought too they simply had submitted to Apple. But if it is so...why do not tell it to every site they also provided the app? Even my 3 years son knows that Apple has a 1-2 week approval time...doesn't sound really good for their marketing departement. Having saw how well it works on Android, I really can't wait to try it on my iPhone.
Thanks for the onlive impressions. I really hope this 1) comes out soon and 2) launches for both iphone and ipad.
